Lucas glanced at the caller ID and couldn’t help smiling.

Max.

It had been quite a while since the two of them had actually talked. Ever since Lucas’s life had been turned upside down by the System, he had been constantly busy traveling, expanding his businesses, and dealing with one thing after another.

He answered the call with a relaxed smile.

"Max."

"Long time no see."

"What’s up?"

There was no reply for a second.

Then Max’s weak, exhausted voice came through the speaker.

"...Lucas..."

"...Are you anywhere nearby?"

The smile on Lucas’s face slowly disappeared.

He knew Max better than anyone.

His roommate was usually loud, energetic, and always joking around.

Hearing him sound this weak immediately made Lucas realize something was seriously wrong.

His expression instantly became serious.

"What happened?"

"Are you hurt?"

Max remained silent for a moment before forcing a laugh.

"...It’s hard to explain over the phone."

"Can you... come back first?"

Lucas didn’t hesitate.

"I’m already on my way."

"We’ll talk when I get there."

After ending the call, he stared quietly out the windshield for a few seconds.

Something wasn’t right.

Very wrong.

Beside him, Maya immediately noticed the subtle change in his expression.

She gently touched his arm.

"What happened?"

"Is everything okay?"

Lucas turned toward her and forced a reassuring smile.

"It’s nothing too serious."

"My roommate called."

"He sounds like he’s in some kind of trouble."

"I need to head back to campus."

Maya nodded understandingly.

"If it’s your roommate..."

"You should go."

The other students had already begun boarding the buses arranged for the return trip.

This time...

Bryce didn’t say a single word.

He simply stood off to the side, watching silently.

There was no confidence left in his eyes.

No unwillingness.

No anger.

Only complete acceptance.

When he saw Maya naturally walking toward Lucas’s Bugatti instead of the school bus...

He lowered his head.

He didn’t even dare try to stop her anymore.

His defeat...

Was absolute.

Lucas opened the passenger door for Maya.

She smiled softly before climbing inside.

A moment later...

The engine of the limited-edition Bugatti roared to life.

With a deep growl, the supercar pulled away from the harbor before quickly disappearing onto the coastal highway.

Lucas maintained an impressive pace, eager to return to Slivermont as quickly as possible.

Even so...

He never drove recklessly.

Not with Maya sitting beside him.

Whenever traffic became heavier or the road narrowed, he instinctively eased off the accelerator.

His speed was fast...

But every movement behind the wheel remained smooth and controlled.

Maya quietly watched him from the passenger seat.

"You know..."

"I’m heading back to Ashford University too."

Lucas glanced at her briefly.

"Oh?"

She nodded.

"The student union still has paperwork to finish after the trip."

"I also need to organize everyone’s attendance and submit the activity report."

She smiled.

"So we’re basically going to the same place."

Lucas chuckled.

"Guess that saves me another trip."

The two continued chatting throughout the drive.

The scenery outside gradually changed as the beautiful coastline gave way to the familiar skyline of Slivermont.

After nearly three hours on the road...

The Bugatti finally entered the city.

Without stopping, Lucas drove straight toward Ashford University.

The moment they arrived on campus, countless students couldn’t help turning their heads.

The Bugatti was simply impossible to ignore.

Lucas slowly parked outside the Student Union building.

Maya unbuckled her seatbelt before turning toward him.

"Thanks for the ride."

Lucas smiled.

"Go finish your work."

She hesitated for a brief second before leaning over and giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.

"Drive safely."

Before Lucas could respond, she quickly got out of the car with slightly red cheeks and hurried into the Student Union building.

Watching her disappear inside, Lucas smiled helplessly.

Then...

He shifted the Bugatti back into gear.

The engine rumbled once more as he turned toward the student dormitories.

Whatever had happened...

He was about to find out.

Lucas barely had time to pull into the dorm parking lot before the unmistakable roar of the Bugatti’s engine attracted attention.

Within seconds, students poured out of the dormitory building.

"What the hell..."

"That’s a Bugatti!"

"Is that the la voiture noire?"

"No way! It actually came to our dorm!"

The luxury hypercar instantly became the center of attention.

Phones were raised in every direction as countless students snapped pictures and recorded videos.

Several boys circled the car, their eyes practically glowing.

"Dude, just listen to that engine..."

"I’ve only seen this car on YouTube."

"Who owns it?"

Then someone recognized the driver.

"...Wait."

"Isn’t that Lucas?"

The crowd erupted into another wave of excitement.

"Lucas!"

"Bro, can you rev it just once?"

"Come on!"

"Just one rev!"

"Please!"

A few bold students even moved closer to the driver’s window, practically begging him.

Lucas smiled apologetically but shook his head.

"Not today."

"I’m in a hurry."

Normally, he wouldn’t have minded entertaining everyone for a moment.

But Max’s phone call still lingered in the back of his mind.

He wasn’t in the mood.

Seeing the seriousness on Lucas’s face, the crowd gradually stepped aside, allowing him to squeeze through the dorm entrance after several minutes of difficulty.

Only after finally escaping the enthusiastic students did Lucas let out a quiet breath.

"...That was harder than I expected."

He quickly made his way upstairs.

The familiar hallway felt strangely quiet.

As he approached his dorm room, an uneasy feeling settled deeper in his chest.

Click.

The door slowly swung open.

The first thing he saw was Luke and Ben kneeling on the floor with worried expressions.

Both of them were bent over someone, carefully supporting his body.

Lucas instinctively looked down.

His pupils contracted.

It was Max.

His roommate lay against the side of the bed, his face pale from pain.

His right arm had been wrapped in thick white bandages from wrist to shoulder, while fresh bruises covered the exposed skin around his neck and face.

Even sitting still seemed difficult for him.

Every slight movement caused him to grit his teeth in pain.

The usually energetic Max looked completely exhausted.

Luke immediately looked up.

"Lucas..."

Ben also stood up with a grim expression.

"You’re finally back."

Lucas didn’t respond immediately.

His gaze remained fixed on Max’s injuries.

The relaxed expression he had worn only moments ago completely disappeared.

His eyes gradually turned cold.

Very cold.

He slowly walked over before crouching beside Max.

"What happened?"

His voice was calm.

But everyone in the room could hear the anger hidden beneath it.
