Chapter 11: Main Quest"Jason."
Just as Jason Carter reached the door, Victoria’s voice stopped him.
The room suddenly felt smaller. Quieter.
He turned.
Victoria Reed sat against the headboard, a blanket pulled up to her chest. Her damp hair spilled over her shoulders in dark waves, a few strands still clinging to the side of her neck. The warm bedside lamp softened every line of her face and made the flush on her cheeks stand out.
"What is it, Aunt Victoria?"
She hesitated. For some reason she couldn’t quite meet his eyes.
"You’re... nineteen now."
Jason blinked. "...Okay?"
"And your mother is sick."
"...Still okay?"
"And some of the things she should be teaching you... she doesn’t have the energy for right now."
A slow sense of danger crept up Jason’s spine.
Victoria’s face went red. Deep red.
"So..." she continued, voice awkward and low, "I’ll teach you instead."
Jason froze.
The silence that followed was thick enough to choke on.
Victoria immediately looked like she wanted to crawl under the blanket and disappear. "I mean~how to deal with girls. Relationships. How not to get played. That kind of thing."
"Oh."
Jason let out a quiet breath of relief. For one dangerous second his imagination had gone somewhere much filthier.
Then Victoria added, almost in a whisper, "Come to my room tomorrow night... before you sleep."
The air between them shifted again~charged, heavy, impossible to ignore.
Before Jason could answer, the familiar mechanical voice slammed into his head.

Jason nearly choked on air. Even the system was shoving him toward this disaster.
"Aunt Victoria..."
"Hm?"
"I’ll come tomorrow."
The second the words left his mouth he realized how they sounded. Victoria’s face went scarlet.
"I mean for the lesson!" he added quickly.
She yanked the blanket higher until only her eyes showed. "Go to sleep already!"
"Okay."
Jason escaped before the situation could get any more dangerous. The door clicked shut behind him.
On the other side, Victoria pressed both hands over her face.
"What the hell is wrong with me lately..."
Her heart refused to slow down. Ever since Sarah’s suicide attempt, Jason had changed. He was calmer. Steadier. More like a real man than the shy college kid she remembered. And somehow that made everything feel complicated in ways she wasn’t ready to examine.
---
Back in his own room, Jason stretched out on the bed and stared at the ceiling.
Today hadn’t been bad. Five hundred. A thousand. Four thousand. Plus the domain names. The future was finally starting to bend in the direction he wanted. His mother was alive. That alone was worth every risk.
As for Olivia...
His eyes narrowed in the dark.
That bitch still owed him every last cent. In his previous life he had wasted years chasing scraps. This time he already knew her secrets, her weaknesses, the exact path she would take. This time he would move first. Slowly. Methodically. And when the moment came, he would take everything back.
Eventually he closed his eyes.
---
The next morning the rich smell of bacon and fresh coffee drifted through the house. Jason’s stomach growled the second he woke. He glanced at the clock~7:12 a.m.~and remembered.
Victoria.
He pulled on a shirt and headed downstairs.
She was already in the kitchen wearing one of Sarah’s old aprons, standing at the stove while sunlight poured through the window. The scene looked almost domestic. Almost too warm.
Jason frowned. "Victoria."
She turned. The second she saw him her expression flickered~guilty and a little flustered.
"Morning."
"Why are you cooking?"
"What kind of question is that?"
"Your ankle."
She immediately looked away. Jason sighed.
"You shouldn’t be standing on it."
"I’m fine."
"No, you’re not. You could barely walk last night."
Victoria opened her mouth, then closed it again. She had no real argument.
Jason walked over and, without warning, crouched down in front of her. Victoria jumped, one hand flying to the edge of the counter.
"W-what are you doing?"
"Checking."
He carefully lifted her foot. The swelling had gone down some, but not enough. His fingers were warm and steady against her skin. Victoria felt heat climb up her neck for reasons that had nothing to do with embarrassment over the injury.
"You should stay off it today."
"I can’t just lie in bed all day."
"You can."
"No."
"Then I’ll carry you."
Victoria stared at him.
Jason stared right back.
Three full seconds passed.
She cracked first. "...Fine."
Jason nodded, satisfied. Victory.
At that exact moment a sleepy voice floated down from the stairs.
"Mom...?"
Footsteps followed. Emma appeared at the bottom of the staircase, long hair messy from sleep, still mid-yawn. Then she froze.
Jason was crouched in front of Victoria, holding her foot. Victoria’s face was bright red. The entire scene looked extremely suspicious.
Emma’s eyes went wide.
"What the hell are you two doing?!"
Jason almost toppled over. Victoria looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her.
"Nothing!"
"We’re not~!"
They spoke at the exact same time.
Emma’s suspicion only deepened. Jason stood up fast. "Her ankle. She twisted it yesterday."
Emma looked at the ankle. Then at Victoria. Then at Jason. Then back at Victoria.
"...Really?"
"Really!" Victoria answered a little too quickly.
Emma narrowed her eyes. Her instincts were screaming that something was off, but she couldn’t prove it. After a long second she finally dropped into a chair.
"Fine."
Jason exhaled quietly. Disaster avoided. For now.
Breakfast stayed mostly peaceful after that. Once the dishes were done, Jason grabbed his motorcycle keys.
"I’m heading out."
Emma looked up. "Where?"
"Campus first. Then some business."
"What kind of business?"
Jason just smiled. "Money."
She rolled her eyes. "You’re being mysterious again."
He laughed, headed outside, and fired up the motorcycle. Warm morning air rushed past as he cut through the city streets. Everything looked the same as it had in his previous life~and completely different. Because this time he already knew what was coming. The group-buying wars. The smartphone explosion. Mobile internet. Dozens of opportunities waiting for someone who could move early enough.
His first target was simple: get rich. Fast.
His phone vibrated in his pocket. Jason pulled over and answered.
"Hello?"
A man’s voice came through, professional and polite. "Is this Mr. Jason Carter?"
Jason’s eyes narrowed. "Who’s this?"
"I’m calling about the domain names you registered yesterday. My boss is interested in purchasing one of them."
Jason’s pulse kicked up. The smile that spread across his face was pure hunter.
"Which domain?"
A short pause. Then three words that made his blood sing.
"SwiftBite.com."
Jason’s grin widened. The first real bucket of gold from the future had just walked into the trap.
Before he could answer, another system notification exploded inside his head.

Jason’s grip tightened on the phone. The wind whipped past him. His eyes lit with sharp, hungry focus.
The real game had finally begun.
