Chapter 3: The Rooftop"Victoria, there’s no time to explain! Where’s your motorcycle? I need to borrow it!"
Jason’s voice was trembling.
For the first time since his rebirth, genuine fear appeared on his face. Victoria Reed immediately sensed something was wrong. The young man standing before her looked like he was on the verge of collapse.
"What happened?" She hurriedly reached into her purse and pulled out a key. "The bike is outside. Jason, tell me what’s going on.
Did something happen to your mother?"
Jason grabbed the key. "She’s at the hospital," his voice came out hoarse. "And if I don’t get there soon... it’ll be too late."
Victoria’s face instantly turned pale.
The motorcycle was parked near the apartment entrance. Without another word, the two rushed outside. Back in 2070, motorcycles were still a common sight despite increasing restrictions.
Jason jumped onto the Honda and started the engine. The motorcycle roared to life. Victoria immediately climbed onto the back seat.
"I’m coming with you."Jason nodded. "Hold on tight."The next second, he twisted the throttle. The motorcycle shot forward. Victoria’s heart nearly jumped out of her chest.
The buildings on both sides blurred as they sped through traffic. Jason weaved between vehicles with terrifying precision. Several times, he came within inches of colliding with cars.
Every near miss caused Victoria’s hands to tighten around his waist.
The wind whipped through her hair. Her skirt fluttered wildly. But neither of them cared.
All he could think about was the hospital.
And Sarah Carter. Jason’s mother. The woman who was supposed to die today.
’Not this time,’ Jason gritted his teeth. ’You died once. I’m not letting it happen again.’
The motorcycle raced across the city. Red lights. Traffic. Crowds. None of it mattered.
Fifty-five minutes later, the hospital finally appeared in the distance. Jason barely waited for the motorcycle to stop before jumping off. He sprinted toward the entrance.
People turned to stare. Some stepped aside. Others frowned. Jason ignored them all. His heart was beating so hard it felt like it would burst from his chest.
The moment he entered the lobby, his expression darkened. The elevators were packed. Dozens of people waited in line.
Jason checked the time. 3:55 PM. Only five minutes remained.
’Damn it!’
He spun around and spotted the emergency stairwell. Without hesitation, he charged toward it.
Meanwhile, Victoria finally caught up. Her chest rose and fell rapidly. Seeing Jason disappear into the stairwell, she looked down at the high heels slowing her down.
Without hesitation, she kicked them off. The expensive shoes clattered across the floor. Ignoring the shocked stares around her, she ran barefoot after him.
At that moment, she only had one thought. ’Please don’t let us be too late.’
Eleven floors. Jason had never climbed eleven floors so quickly in his life.
By the time he reached the rooftop entrance, his vision was blurry. His lungs felt like they were on fire.
Every breath burned. His legs shook violently. But he didn’t stop.Because he remembered. He remembered receiving the phone call, and arriving too late.
He remembered seeing the white sheet covering his mother’s body. crying until his voice disappeared. Those memories had haunted him for nearly twenty years.
’Not this time. Never again.’
Jason pushed open the rooftop door.
BANG!
The metal door slammed against the wall.
The rooftop came into view. The afternoon wind swept across the building.
And there, a thin figure stood at the edge. Wearing a hospital gown. Standing only inches away from death.
Jason’s entire body froze. His eyes instantly turned red. ’Mom.’ He had made it. This time... he had actually made it.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then the woman slowly turned around. The moment she saw him, shock appeared on her pale face.
"Jason?" Her voice trembled. "W-What are you doing here?"
Her body had become much thinner than he remembered. Chemotherapy had already begun taking its toll.
The strong woman who had raised him alone now looked fragile enough to be blown away by the wind. Jason’s heart ached.
A few minutes later, Victoria emerged from the stairwell. Her breathing was uneven. The moment she saw Sarah standing on the edge, she covered her mouth.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
"Sarah!" The rooftop fell silent. A heavy silence.
Sarah lowered her head in shame. She couldn’t even look at them.
After her diagnosis, the medical bills had become overwhelming. The first rounds of treatment alone had already cost over one hundred thousand dollars.
And that was only the beginning. She knew what came next. More treatment. More expenses. More suffering.
She had spent her entire life struggling. Since her husband died, she had raised Jason alone. Every dollar mattered. Every sacrifice mattered. The old apartment. The savings. Everything. She wanted to leave something behind for her son. She wanted him to have a home one day. A family and a future.
Instead, she had become a burden. A burden too heavy for him to carry.
So she made a choice. A mother’s choice. At least, that’s what she told herself.
"Mom." Jason’s voice finally broke the silence. He slowly walked forward. One step. Then another.
Sarah immediately became nervous. "Don’t come closer." Jason ignored her. "Mom, what are you doing?"
"I..." Her lips trembled. "I just came up here to get some fresh air." Jason stared at her. Neither of them believed that lie.
Sarah quickly changed the subject. "Shouldn’t you be in school?" Her eyes avoided his. She couldn’t bear looking at him. Couldn’t bear seeing her son’s face.
Jason stopped a few feet away.
His expression became calm. Then Jason spoke. "Oh." His tone was casual. "I came here to jump too."
The rooftop instantly fell silent. Sarah’s eyes widened. Victoria froze. For a moment, neither woman could process what they had just heard.
Jason continued speaking. His voice remained completely emotionless. He took another step forward.
"If you’re leaving..." His eyes locked onto hers. "Then I’ll go with you.
Color instantly drained from Sarah’s face.
"Jason!" Her entire body trembled, genuine panic appeared in her eyes.
