Chapter 39: The Simp Bites BackOlivia Hayes pressed a trembling hand against her cheek.
For several seconds, she simply stared at Jason .
She looked less angry than stunned, as if her mind couldn’t quite process what had just happened.
Then the shock gave way to fury.
"You actually hit me?"
Her voice cracked.
"You fucking hit me!"
The quiet garden seemed to swallow the words for a heartbeat before her scream rang through the trees.
Olivia’s eyes burned with humiliation. She had never imagined Jason would raise a hand against her. Not him. Not the man who had once followed her around like a lost puppy, apologized whenever she was upset, and treated every word she said like it mattered.
That Jason was gone.
And somehow, that frightened her more than the slap itself.
"You bastard!"
She lunged at him.
Jason barely moved.
The instant she came within reach, his hand snapped out again.
Smack!
The second slap knocked Olivia off balance.
She stumbled backward, her heel catching against the uneven ground before she crashed onto the grass. Dust and dry leaves scattered around her.
For a moment, she didn’t move.
Jason stood over her, his expression cold.
"I’m going to ask you one last time."
His voice was quiet now.
"Are you sober yet?"
Olivia slowly pushed herself upright.
Her cheek throbbed. Her hair had fallen across her face, and tears of rage blurred her vision.
"You’re going to regret this."
Her voice shook.
"I’ll call the police. I’ll call my brother. I’ll make sure you pay for this!"
She wiped angrily at her tears.
"How dare you hit me? I’m a woman!"
Jason stared at her without saying anything.
That only seemed to make her angrier.
"You’ve always been violent underneath it all, haven’t you?" Olivia continued, her voice rising. "It’s a good thing I left you. If I’d stayed with you, who knows what you would’ve done to me later?"
She was trying to convince herself as much as him.
Trying to turn herself into the victim.
Trying desperately to regain control of the situation.
"I’ll tell everyone what you did," she snapped. "I’ll put your name all over social media. I’ll make sure everyone knows exactly what kind of person you are."
Her imagination was already running wild.
She could see it clearly.
Thousands of people condemning Jason. His reputation destroyed. Strangers calling him a monster. His life turned upside down.
She would make him pay.
Jason gave a humorless laugh.
"You really still don’t understand what’s happening, do you?"
He stepped closer.
Olivia instinctively scooted backward.
"You’ve spent so long believing everyone else is beneath you that you can’t even recognize when you’ve finally pushed the wrong person too far."
"Stay away from me!"
Jason stopped.
His eyes hardened.
"You keep threatening me with the police like that’s supposed to scare me."
Olivia glared at him.
"I’ll have you arrested."
"Go ahead."
Jason’s answer came without hesitation.
"Call them."
Olivia froze.
Jason reached into his jacket.
"But before you do, there’s something you should know."
He pulled out his phone.
"I have enough evidence to make sure your little secret doesn’t stay a secret."
The color slowly drained from Olivia’s face.
"What are you talking about?"
Jason watched her carefully.
"Professor Malcolm Whitlock."
The reaction was immediate.
Olivia’s breath caught.
For the briefest moment, genuine fear flashed across her face.
Then she covered it with anger.
"I don’t know anyone by that name."
Jason almost smiled.
"Really?"
"Yes!"
"You’re sure?"
"Of course I’m sure!"
Her voice was too loud.
Too quick.
Jason tilted his head.
"Malcolm Whitlock. Your finance professor. An associate professor at the university."
Olivia’s heart hammered against her ribs.
There were plenty of professors at the university. Jason couldn’t possibly know.
Could he?
She forced herself to stay calm.
"So what if I know him? That doesn’t prove anything."
"Good point."
Jason folded his arms.
"So let’s talk about your academic record."
Olivia’s expression tightened.
"You’re a sophomore."
He paused.
"Yet you’ve already managed to publish two impressive finance papers."
Olivia swallowed.
"What’s your point?"
"My point is that this is the same Olivia who used to struggle through her finals."
Jason’s voice remained almost conversational.
"You used to copy answers just to get through some of your classes. Then suddenly you’re publishing advanced research?"
Olivia’s fingers curled into her palms.
"I worked hard."
"Did you?"
"Yes."
She lifted her chin.
"I’ve always been capable. I just didn’t take school seriously before."
Jason gave a quiet chuckle.
"That’s your explanation?"
"What else do you want me to say?"
"Nothing."
Jason reached into his pocket.
"I’ll let the evidence speak for itself."
He pulled out a photograph.
Olivia’s eyes immediately locked onto it.
Her face went white.
The photograph showed her walking beside Malcolm Whitlock.
Their hands were intertwined.
They were entering a hotel together.
There was nothing ambiguous about the image.
Olivia stared at it as though she had been struck again.
"No..."
Her voice barely came out.
Jason held the photograph between two fingers.
"Still don’t know him?"
"That—"
Olivia’s lips trembled.
"That picture is fake."
Jason raised an eyebrow.
"Photoshop?"
"Yes!"
She suddenly lunged forward.
"Give me that!"
Jason stepped aside.
Olivia missed him and nearly fell again.
"Give it to me!"
Her panic was beginning to overwhelm her.
Jason simply watched her.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"You weren’t worried about the picture being fake."
He held it up.
"You were worried about me having it."
Olivia’s breathing became ragged.
"You don’t understand!"
"Oh, I understand perfectly."
Jason reached into his pocket again.
"And that’s not the only one."
He produced another photograph.
This one was taken inside the hotel.
Olivia’s entire body went rigid.
The room around her seemed to disappear.
Her eyes fixed on the photograph.
Her face.
Malcolm’s face.
The unmistakable setting.
There was no longer any room for denial.
Her knees weakened.
"No..."
She shook her head.
"No, no, no..."
Jason lowered the photograph.
"You were saying?"
Olivia stared at him, horror spreading across her face.
"It’s fake."
Her voice was barely audible.
"They’re all fake."
She shook her head harder.
"I don’t know him."
Jason looked at her for a long moment.
"Keep saying that."
He slipped the photographs back into his pocket.
"Because if you want to call the police, I’ll happily hand these over as evidence."
Olivia’s lips parted.
Nothing came out.
"You said you wanted everyone to know what kind of person I am."
Jason’s voice became colder.
"Fine."
He took one step toward her.
"Maybe everyone should know what kind of person you are, too."
Olivia’s imagination exploded with possibilities.
The university.
Her classmates.
Her professors.
Her friends.
Her family.
The gossip.
The whispers.
The looks.
Her academic career could disappear overnight.
Everything she had worked toward could collapse.
And if Malcolm Whitlock’s name became attached to the scandal, there was no telling how far it would spread.
Her dreams of a comfortable, wealthy life suddenly felt as fragile as glass.
She looked at Jason again.
This wasn’t the weak man she had known.
This wasn’t the desperate ex-boyfriend who used to beg her to come back.
This man was calm.
Prepared.
And terrifyingly certain of himself.
For the first time, Olivia realized she had completely misjudged him.
Her anger broke.
Her pride followed.
She dropped to her knees.
"Jason..."
Her voice cracked.
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
"Please."
Jason said nothing.
Olivia lowered her head, shoulders trembling.
"Please, Jason. I’m begging you."
She clasped her hands together.
"For everything we had before... please don’t do this to me."
The words came out between sobs.
"I’ll give the money back."
Jason’s expression didn’t change.
"I’ll give you everything back. Just... please."
She looked up at him through tear-filled eyes.
"I was wrong."
For the first time since their relationship began, Olivia Hayes looked genuinely afraid of losing everything.
And Jason knew exactly how much that fear was worth.
