Provincial Hospital

The private hospital room smelled sharply of antiseptic.

Marcus Bennett lay propped against a stack of pillows, his back wrapped tightly in layers of fresh white bandages. A faint reddish stain had already begun to seep through the gauze.

Every breath pulled at the wounds.

Every movement reminded him of the beating he’d taken the night before.

Several of his men stood around the room. Most were broad-shouldered, heavily tattooed, and dressed in dark clothes. They looked more like members of a street gang than hospital visitors.

Marcus had spent years building a reputation on the streets, and he wasn’t used to being the one lying helplessly in a hospital bed.

His temper had been getting worse by the minute.

He took a drag from his cigarette, narrowed his eyes, and snapped into the phone.

"Stop crying. You’re giving me a headache."

On the other end of the line, Chloe Bennett struggled to catch her breath.

"I-I told you... the money is gone..."

Marcus’s expression immediately darkened.

"What do you mean it’s gone?"

His voice exploded through the room.

"Speak clearly!"

Chloe swallowed nervously.

"The fifty thousand... Ethan took it back."

Marcus’s eyes widened.

For several seconds, there was silence.

Then~

"WHAT?!"

He slammed his fist against the mattress.

"You useless idiot!"

The sudden movement sent a sharp jolt of pain through his injured back.

"Didn’t you tell me that your pathetic ex-boyfriend had given you fifty thousand? Didn’t you say you’d already gotten your hands on it?"

He clenched his jaw.

"How the hell did he take it back?"

One of his men quietly stepped forward and took the cigarette from Marcus’s fingers before it could fall.

Marcus barely noticed.

He was furious.

"Did someone rob you?"

His voice dropped into a dangerous growl.

"Who the hell was stupid enough to steal my money?"

"No... it wasn’t a robbery."

Chloe’s voice trembled.

"It was Ethan. He came and took it back."

Marcus’s face twisted with rage.

He grabbed the glass of water beside his bed and hurled it against the floor.

CRASH!

Glass exploded across the tiles.

"Damn it!"

The movement pulled violently at his wounds.

"Ah~!"

Marcus sucked in a breath and grabbed his side.

But the pain only made him angrier.

"You’re telling me he asked for the money and you actually handed it over?"

His eyes burned with fury.

"Are you completely useless? You could have made up an excuse! You could have stalled him!"

On the phone, Chloe’s legs nearly gave out.

She knew her brother well.

Marcus wasn’t someone who shouted without consequences.

But then, amid her panic, an idea slowly took shape.

Her expression changed.

A faint, sinister smile appeared at the corner of her lips.

Ethan, you humiliated me first.

Don’t blame me for what happens next.

She immediately lowered her voice and began to cry again.

"I-I couldn’t help it..."

"He hit me."

Marcus froze.

"He hit you?"

"Yes..." Chloe sobbed. "He threatened me. He said that if I didn’t give him the money, he’d kill me."

Marcus’s expression hardened.

But his concern wasn’t really for his sister.

His first thought was about whether Chloe’s face had been badly damaged.

If she looked terrible when it came time for her to marry, her value on the marriage market would drop.

That was what mattered to him.

"Did you tell him who I am?"

Chloe hesitated.

"I... I did."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

"And?"

"He said..."

She deliberately paused.

Marcus growled impatiently.

"What did he say?"

Chloe suppressed the smile threatening to spread across her face.

"He said he’d never heard of you."

Marcus’s expression changed.

"He also said that if you came looking for him..."

She took a breath.

"He’d beat you too."

The room went silent.

A dangerous stillness settled over Marcus’s face.

Then he slowly pushed himself upright.

"Ethan..."

His voice was frighteningly calm.

"Where does he live?"

Chloe’s heart raced.

Hooked.

She immediately gave him the address.

"Maplewood Apartments. Building Three, Apartment 501."

Then she added casually:

"And he doesn’t live alone."

Marcus’s eyes sharpened.

"He has a beautiful aunt and two gorgeous female roommates. I’ve seen pictures before. They’re stunning."

A greedy look appeared in Marcus’s eyes.

"Really?"

"Really."

Chloe smiled to herself.

"I swear."

She had no sympathy for Ethan anymore.

She wanted him destroyed.

Not just dead.

Destroyed.

Ethan, you should have thought about the consequences before humiliating me.

If you’re gone, those photographs disappear with you.

And then I’ll finally be free.

Marcus turned toward his men.

"You heard her."

His voice carried an unmistakable threat.

"Go to Maplewood Apartments."

Several men straightened.

"Get the money back."

Marcus paused.

Then a cruel smile spread across his face.

"And bring the women with you."

His men exchanged glances before grinning.

"Boss, we’ve got it."

"Consider it done."

Marcus leaned back against the pillows, his anger slowly turning into satisfaction.

He had been humiliated badly enough already.

Someone had put him in a hospital bed.

Someone had made him look weak.

And now some college kid had the nerve to disrespect him?

Marcus couldn’t let that stand.

On the other end of the call, Chloe was practically trembling with excitement.

Yes.

That’s it.

Go after him.

She imagined Ethan being dragged away, terrified and helpless.

Her hatred twisted her expression.

Ethan ...

I don’t just want you dead.

I want you to regret ever crossing me.

Before Marcus could end the call, another voice came from beside him.

"Marcus, give me the phone."

Marcus looked over.

His father, Daniel Bennett, was sitting in the corner.

Daniel was a heavy drinker whose life had long since fallen apart. He was rarely sober and almost never useful, but he had one thing in common with Marcus:

He cared about money.

Marcus sighed and handed him the phone.

"Fine."

Daniel cleared his throat and brought the phone to his ear.

"Chloe? It’s your dad."

"Yes, Dad."

Daniel glanced toward Marcus before continuing.

"Your brother told me he’s planning to open a vape shop at Westbrook Shopping Center."

Chloe’s expression stiffened.

"He still needs another hundred thousand dollars."

Daniel’s tone was casual, almost as though he were discussing groceries.

"So you’d better start looking for your next target."

There was a pause.

Then he added bluntly:

"And that boyfriend of yours~he didn’t sleep with you, did he?"

Chloe’s fingers tightened around the phone.

"If you’ve already given yourself to some useless man, your value will drop."

Silence.

For several seconds, Chloe said nothing.

Then she lowered her voice.

"No."

A cold smile appeared on her face.

"No, he didn’t."

"He’s just a fool. Why would I give myself to someone like him?"

In Chloe’s mind, Ethan had never been a boyfriend in the true sense.

He had been a resource.

A convenient source of money.

A man she could flatter, manipulate, and discard whenever she was finished with him.

She had initially gotten close to him simply because she found him attractive.

She never expected him to be stupid enough to hand over his entire savings.

But once the money had reached her hands, she’d considered it hers.

Why would she give it back?

That was how the world worked, as far as Chloe was concerned.

Find someone with money.

Make him believe he loves you.

Take everything you can.

Then move on to someone richer.

She imagined herself living in a luxurious house someday, surrounded by designer clothes, expensive cars, and everything she had ever wanted.

A satisfied smile slowly spread across her face.

That’s the life I deserve.

And somewhere in the back of her mind, she was already imagining her next target.

She had no idea that the man she had just tried to destroy was already several steps ahead of her.
