Infinite Rebate System: Beautiful Women And Endless Returns
Chapter 43: ScatteredXavier heard about Femi through Kelvin.
Not dramatically. Just Kelvin appearing at his desk on a Tuesday morning with the particular energy of someone delivering information they found significant and weren’t sure how to frame.
"Femi’s gone," Kelvin said, sitting down.
"Gone how," Xavier said without looking up from his phone.
"Cleared out his room in the student hostel over the weekend," Kelvin said. "His friends too. All three of them. Just.. gone. No withdrawal notice to the faculty. No explanation." He paused. "People are saying it’s connected to the Ashworth investigation. That whatever law enforcement found when they started pulling Cardinal Circle threads had names attached to it."
"Probably," Xavier said.
Kelvin looked at him. "You don’t seem surprised."
"Because I’m not," Xavier said.
Kelvin opened his mouth. Closed it. Made the decision he always eventually made in these conversations and let it go.
"Okay," he said. "I’ll be Around."
"Catch you later," Xavier agreed.
He found out the specifics that afternoon from the security contact.
One message. Brief.
Femi Adebayo left Kenvale district Sunday night. Destination unknown. Cardinal Circle third tier has effectively dissolved following law enforcement pressure on second tier operators. No indication of plans to return to Riverside. Consider the matter closed.
Xavier read it once.
Then deleted it.
Finally Closed, he thought.
He was sitting in the cafeteria when he processed it fully. Coffee in front of him. Campus doing its ordinary Tuesday thing around him.
Femi, he thought. Gone. No dramatic confrontation. No final exchange. Just scattered. Like dust when a window opens.
He thought about the first day at Riverside. The corridor. The shoulder that had sent him stumbling into the doorframe. The laughter disappearing around the corner.
That version of Xavier would have spent weeks replaying that moment, he thought. Would have wanted a confrontation. An acknowledgement. Something that said. You saw me and now I see you.
Different now.
He picked up his coffee.
I don’t hold any malice toward you Femi, he thought quietly. Not really. You were just a man operating within the limits of what you understood. He looked out the cafeteria window at the courtyard. The problem was you came into proximity with someone I own. And that has consequences you weren’t equipped to handle.
Not my fault.
Not exactly yours either.
Just how it went.
He finished his coffee and checked his balance.
$500,000.
He checked the gauge.
Amira — 100%
Sarah — 89%
He checked the EXP.
22,250 out of 50,000.
He looked at his notes one more time.
Cardinal Circle Chapter closed, he wrote.
Femi scattered.
Ashworth gone, he thought. Poor guy just got caught up in all this mess. He almost felt something close to sympathy. Almost. Built fifteen years of operation, institutional cover, an entire network and then a first year Food and Nutrition student wandered into the edge of it and took the whole thing down in eight weeks.
Wrong place. Wrong time. Wrong person to cross.
Not my problem.
He saved the note and closed it.
Clean, he thought. That Chapter is clean.
Amira found him in the corridor after the afternoon lecture.
She fell into step beside him without preamble, the way she always did now. No announcement. Just present.
Xavier glanced at her, and for a moment, his attention settled on the things that had first caught his eye about her—the way her eyes looked behind those glasses, sharp and expressive despite the frames, and her compact, curvy figure that somehow made her presence impossible to overlook.
"Femi left," she said.
"I know," Xavier said.
"He’s not coming back," she said. Not a question.
"No," Xavier said.
She was quiet for a moment confused about the expression to put on. They walked. The corridor emptying around them as students dispersed toward the exit.
"How do you feel about it," she said.
Xavier thought about that honestly.
"Nothing," he said. "I feel nothing about it."
Amira glanced at him sideways. "Nothing at all."
"He was a problem," Xavier said. "The problem is resolved. What’s left to feel?...."
She was quiet again.
"Most people would feel something," she said. "Relief at minimum."
"I felt relief when the integrity board complaint was withdrawn," Xavier said. "That was the thing that mattered. Femi leaving is just the natural conclusion."
Amira pushed her glasses up and looked ahead.
"You’re very strange Xavier," she said.
"You’ve mentioned that," he said.
"I keep meaning it differently each time," she said.
They reached the exit. Stepped out into the afternoon.
At the top of the steps Amira stopped and looked at the campus spread out below them. Students crossing the courtyard. The ordinary afternoon energy of Riverside doing its thing.
"It’s over," she said quietly. Not to him specifically. Just saying it out loud.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at him.
"What’s next," she said.
Xavier looked out at the courtyard. At the Arts building visible across it. At the showcase banner still hanging from the previous week.
What’s next, he thought.
Sarah Torres at 89%.
Main quest still open.
27,750 EXP to Tier 3.
$500,000 in the account.
Asset Rebound waiting to be tested.
An EP production package sitting at Ardmore Recording with Sarah’s name on it.
"Something more interesting," he chuckled." The main feasts just around the corner".
Amira looked at him for a moment with the expression that had replaced mixed feelings entirely. Something warmer and more certain underneath it.
"Should I be worried," she said.
"No No," he replied .
"Xavier."
"Amira."
"That’s not reassuring," she said.
"It wasn’t meant to be," he said. "It was meant to be honest."
She shook her head slowly. Almost smiled.
"See you later then," she said.
She turned and walked down the steps toward the east gate.
Xavier watched her go.
100% favorability, he thought. Maximum Bond. 6x permanent return. Already in the bag.
She just hasn’t said the word yet.
He turned and looked at the Arts building one more time.
Sarah Torres, he thought. 89%.
One move.
One right move and she crosses the threshold.
He walked down the steps and headed for the gate.
Patience, he thought.
Is the virtue I need at this moment.
But not for much longer.
