Xavier was at his desk at 9AM on a Monday when the system chimed.

Not the usual transaction notification. Something different. He picked up his phone.

[ REBATE SYSTEM — MAIN QUEST UPDATE ]

The Reckoning — Stage 2 Activated

Target: Sarah Torres

Current Favorability: 92%

Required Favorability for Final Stage: 100%

Deadline: 14 days

[ Failure to reach threshold within deadline will result in quest reset ]

Penalty: All Sarah Torres favorability returns to 0%

Xavier read it twice.

Fourteen days, he thought. Or everything resets to zero.

He looked at the notification for a long moment.

Does the system somehow have a way to affect things outside its host, he thought. Like actually reaching into reality and wipe three months of work on a person’s feelings. He closed the notification. I don’t want to test that. Not even slightly.

Take it at face value, he decided. Fourteen days. Eight points. Move accordingly.

He sat back in his chair.

The system has been patient for months, he thought. Now it wants a deadline met. He looked at the notification again. 92% to 100%. Eight points. Fourteen days.

And if I miss it. Three months of work on Sarah Torres disappears overnight.

He closed the notification and pulled up his notes.

8 points, he wrote. 14 days. What moves the gauge.

He thought through everything he’d learned about the favorability mechanic over the past three months.

Conversation — nothing.

Presence — nothing.

Anonymous spend — nothing.

Direct spend she knows about — significant.

Emotional vulnerability she shares with me — significant.

Actions that protect something she cares about — significant.

He looked at the list.

Of course money moves women, he thought. Not because they’re shallow. He’d made that mistake in his thinking once before and corrected it. He tapped his pen on the desk. Because money signals certainty. Control. A man who spends without flinching is a man who has decided something and isn’t second guessing it. He looked at the gauge sitting at 92%. Women don’t fall for the money. They fall for what the money says about the man behind it.

The old Xavier never understood that.

Spent from fear. From desperation. From please don’t leave me energy that leaked through every gesture.

Scarcity repels, he thought. Abundance attracts.

Simple.

The community centre, he thought. She brought me there because it mattered to her. That moved it three points. He tapped his pen on the desk. The masterclass moved it fourteen points in one call because she told me something she’d never told anyone.

The gauge responds to depth, he noted. Not frequency. Not money alone. Depth of connection combined with deliberate spend.

Eight points in fourteen days, he thought. That’s not a sprint. That’s one right move at the right moment.

He pulled up his phone and opened Instagram.

Sarah had posted a story that morning. Early 7AM. A photo of her notebook opens on a page of handwritten lyrics with the caption: EP session one is tomorrow. terrified.

Xavier looked at that word.

Terrified.

Session one at Ardmore Recording, he thought. Tomorrow. First time she walks into the studio to record something real with her name properly on it. He set the phone down. She’s terrified and she put it on her story at 7AM before she’d fully woken up. That’s not performance. That’s the real thing leaking out before she could contain it.

He typed one message.

Xavier: terrified is the right feeling. It means it matters.

He put the phone down and went back to his notes.

The EP session is tomorrow, he thought. That’s the first opportunity. Show up in the right way at the right moment and the gauge moves.

But showing up isn’t enough on its own, he thought. The spend needs to be attached to something she feels deeply.

He started planning.

His phone buzzed twenty minutes later.

@sarah.torres.official: how are you always so calm about things that terrify everyone else

Xavier: I’ve been terrified before. It passes. What doesn’t pass is the regret of not doing the thing.

A long pause.

@sarah.torres.official: that’s either very wise or very annoying

Xavier: probably both.

@sarah.torres.official: 😒

@sarah.torres.official: Xavier

Xavier: Sarah...

@sarah.torres.official: will you come tomorrow. To the first session. Just for the beginning. I don’t need you there the whole time I just..

She stopped typing. Started again.

@sarah.torres.official: I just want someone there who won’t make it weird.

Xavier looked at that message for a moment.

Someone who won’t make it weird, he thought. Out of everyone in her circle. Temi, Dana, Jordan, her Arts faculty connections. She’s asking me. He looked at the ceiling. The person she’s known for three months. The Food and Nutrition student who wandered into her notice board and walked away before she could finish deciding what he was.

She’s asking me.

Xavier: what time.

@sarah.torres.official: 10AM. Ardmore Recording. You know where it is obviously.

Xavier: I’ll be there.

@sarah.torres.official: okay

@sarah.torres.official: okay Xavier. Thank you.

He set the phone down.

14 days, he thought. Starting tomorrow.

He spent the rest of Monday cycling through his cap spending and thinking.

The EP session is the next natural spend opportunity, he thought. But the spend needs to be connected to something real. Not just studio time. I’ve already paid for that. He pulled up Ardmore Recording’s website. What does a first recording session actually need that she wouldn’t have thought to arrange.

He read through the session details.

_ _

Sarah came out of the studio at 4PM.

Xavier was still in the reception area. He’d left twice, once to get coffee from the place two doors down, once to walk around the block when the sitting got restless. But he’d come back both times without fully deciding to.

She looked different coming out than she had going in.

Not dramatically. Just settled. The particular settledness of someone who had done something they’d been building toward for a long time and found that the doing of it was exactly what they’d needed it to be.

She stopped when she saw him still there.
