Amira looked at him for a long moment.

"Stop doing that," she said. But there was no heat in it.

"I’ll try," he replied.

The library was quiet around them. Someone turning pages at the next table. The low hum of the ventilation system. The kind of silence that made honest answers feel more necessary than usual.

Xavier looked at Amira.

He looked at her sitting across from him with her arms folded and her glasses on and the expression of someone who had already decided to hear whatever the answer was.

She always does that, he thought. Decides to hear the thing before she asks for it. No performance in how she receives information. Just...openly. Ready. Amira.

In my previous life I would have given anything for someone to look at me that way.

She deserves an answer, he thought. Just not that one.

He looked at her across the table.

"I’m handling something," he said. "It’ll be done after the festival."

Amira looked at him. "That’s it...."

"That’s it," he replied.

She held his gaze for a moment with the expression of someone who knew they weren’t getting the full picture and had decided to accept the portion they were given.

"Is it going to come back on you?," she asked.

"No," he replied.

"Is it going to come back on me," she said.

"No," he replied.

"Okay," she said. Just that. Clean and simple the way she accepted things she couldn’t change. She pushed her glasses up and looked at him one more time. "Just don’t go quiet on my texts again. Send one word if that’s all you’ve got. Just... something."

"Okay," he said.

"Okay," she said.

She didn’t push, he thought. Didn’t probe. Didn’t try to extract what he wasn’t offering. He looked at her across the table. That’s the thing about Amira. She knows the difference between what she’s owed and what she wants. And she never confuses the two.

He looked at Amira across the table.

"She held his gaze for a moment longer. Searching for something in his face. Whatever she found she kept to herself.

"One more thing," she said.

"Say it," he said.

"Whatever you’re about to do.." she said it carefully, the way she said things that mattered "be careful it doesn’t cost you something you actually want to keep. Because some things look like they don’t matter until they’re gone." She pushed her glasses up. "And you’re smarter than most people but that particular blind spot catches everyone eventually."

Xavier looked at her.

Something I actually want to keep, he thought.. Is there actually something?.

He didn’t respond to that one.

Amira looked at him for a long moment. Long enough that the person at the next table glanced over briefly then looked away.

Then she picked up her bag from the floor and stood.

"Okay," she said. Just that. The word of someone who had said what they came to say and was done.

"Amira," he said.

She stopped.

He looked at her standing there with her bag on her shoulder and her glasses on and the expression of someone who had delivered something important and was waiting to see if it had landed.

"See you later," he said.

Something moved in her expression. Small. The particular warmth of someone who recognised a thing being said back to them.

"See you later Xavier," she said.

She turned and walked out of the library without looking back.

Xavier sat alone at the corner table and looked at the space she’d left.

Be careful it doesn’t cost you something you actually want to keep, he thought. Girls with unnecessary stress.

He looked at the window. The afternoon outside. The ordinary Wednesday continuing without any awareness of what was sitting in a library corner table with a cooling coffee and few days left before everything concluded.

Then he picked up his bag and his phone and left the library.

The afternoon air hit him when he stepped outside. Cool, clear, the particular quality of a day that didn’t care what was happening inside the people moving through it.

Xavier walked toward the main road with his hands in his pockets.

Just a few days to get this over with, he thought.

_ _

Xavier got back to his apartment at 9PM.

He’d spent the evening doing ordinary things deliberately. Ate at a restaurant near the east gate nothing special, just food. Walked back instead of cabbing. Took the long route through the residential streets rather than the main road. Let the city be around him without thinking too hard about any of it.

A few more days, he thought, unlocking his door. Everything will be different, it’s just about time to complete this mission. I’m wondering so bad what that special package might be..

He changed, made coffee, and sat at his desk.

He opened his notes and went through some stuffs.

Not because anything needed checking. Everything had been checked. Everything had been confirmed and double confirmed and triple confirmed over the past ten days with the particular thoroughness of someone who understood that the difference between a plan that worked and one that didn’t was usually one detail nobody thought to verify.

He just needed to see it laid out.

AV contractor, he read. Confirmed. Payment cleared. Technical arrangements locked. The message delivers at a specific point in Sarah’s performance. Untraceable back to me.

He moved to the next item.

EP contract, he read. Holding company. Co-ownership clause. $15,000 recoupment. Patricia confirmed the terms are airtight. Sarah has read it and consulted a lawyer and the lawyer confirmed what she already suspected. That the contract is standard and enforceable and she signed it. He looked at that item for a moment. She signed it the morning she found out about the upgrade. Too overwhelmed to read it properly.

That’s the part that cost her, he thought. Not my fault. Just the consequence of not reading what you sign.

He moved to the next item.
