Infinite Rebate System: Beautiful Women And Endless Returns
Chapter 63: A Good dayXavier woke up at 8AM on Saturday.
The city outside was doing its quiet weekend morning thing. Less traffic than on weekdays. Someone’s radio through an open window somewhere down the street. The particular stillness of a Saturday that didn’t know or care what had happened at an Arts festival the night before.
He checked his phone.
Seventeen missed calls across the night. Sarah. Temi. Dana. Jordan. Two numbers he didn’t recognise at all. Probably people from the Arts faculty who’d gotten his contact through someone else and had opinions they wanted to share.
He put the phone face down and got up.
Showered. Made coffee. Sat at the desk.
The Reckoning is done, he thought. Now life continues.
He opened his banking app and started the day’s rebate cycle. Small transactions, nothing aggressive. The Saturday routine. A breakfast delivery, an online purchase, a donation cycling through at the Tier 2 rate. The balance climbing quietly in the background the way it always did.

He ate at his desk and looked at his notes.
Special package, he noted. Still unopened.
He pulled up the system notification from last night.
[ Special Package Unlocked — Open now or later? ]
Later, he’d pressed. He looked at it now. Still later. He wasn’t ready to open it yet. Something about opening it felt like closing a Chapter he wasn’t fully done sitting with.
Soon, he thought. Not today.
He closed the notification and checked his balance.
$645,196, he noted. Cap barely touched.

$645,836, he noted. Nowhere near the cap. Good. Low profile until things settled.
His phone had been buzzing intermittently all morning. He’d checked it twice and responded to nothing. Sarah’s messages from the night before were still there. The aggressive ones, the aggressive ones after those, then nothing after 2AM when she’d presumably run out of energy or decided sleep was more useful than sending messages into a void.
One message from Amira at 10AM.
Amira: still on for tonight?
Xavier: yes. 7PM.
Amira: okay. Don’t be late.
Xavier: I’m never late.
Amira: you’re sometimes late.
Xavier: name one time.
Amira: 😐 7PM Xavier.
He almost smiled and put the phone down.
Tonight, he thought. Something normal. Something that isn’t Friday night or Sarah Torres or the festival or any of it . Only thing I might miss was the good sex we had today Sarah he chuckled.
Just Amira at 7PM.
He left the apartment at 6:45PM.
Premium Uber. Clean shirt. The dark leather shoes.

Amira was waiting outside her hostel when he arrived. Not anxiously. Just ready the way she was always ready. Dark jeans, a clean top, hair down. The contacts instead of the glasses. The version of her that came out for evenings that meant something without announcing that they meant something.
She looked at him when he stepped out of the Uber.
"You look tired," she said.
"I’m fine," he said.
"Xavier."
"I’m fine Amira," he said. More directly.
She held his gaze for a moment. Reading whatever she found. Then she nodded once. The small precise nod of someone who had decided to accept the answer they’d been given and move on.
"Okay," she said. "Come on."
She’d picked the restaurant. A place on the west side he hadn’t been to. Small, warm, the kind that took its food seriously and its atmosphere quietly. They were shown to a corner table and Amira ordered without looking at the menu the way she did when she’d already decided at home.
Xavier ordered and leaned back and let the evening settle.
This, he thought. This is what normal feels like.
They talked. Not about Sarah. Not about the festival.. Just conversation. Amira had heard back from Kenvale General about the partnership proposal. Preliminary positive response. A formal review meeting scheduled for the following month.
"That’s significant," Xavier said.
"I know," she said. Trying not to show how significant but showing it anyway around the edges the way she always did when something genuinely moved her.
"The trust funding makes the difference," he said.
"The trust funding makes everything possible," she said. She looked at him across the table. "Xavier."
"Amira."
"Thank you," she said. "Not the automatic one. The actual one."
"I know the difference," he said.
"I know you do," she said.
They ate. The restaurant doing its quiet Saturday evening thing around them. Someone’s anniversary at the table near the window. Flowers, the particular awkward sweetness of people celebrating something. A group of friends near the entrance getting louder as the evening went on.
Normal, Xavier thought. Ordinary. Real.
This is what I’m coming back to after all of it, he thought. This is what it feels like being relieved of your past trauma.
He looked at Amira across the table.
Be careful it doesn’t cost you something you actually want to keep, he thought.
It didn’t, he thought. She’s right here.
After dinner they walked. The west side of Kenvale was quieter than the commercial district. Residential streets, the occasional corner shop, the city at night being itself without performing it.
Amira walked beside him with her hands in the pockets of her jacket.
"Xavier," she said after a while.
"Amira."
"Are you okay. Actually okay."
He walked for a moment before answering.
"Getting there," he said.
She looked at him sideways. "That’s more honest than I’m fine."
"Yes," he said.
She nodded. Looked ahead.
"Okay," she said. "Getting there is enough."
They walked back to her hostel slowly. At the entrance she turned and looked at him.
"See you later," she said.
"See you later," he said.
She went inside.
Xavier stood outside for a moment in the quiet of the Saturday night street.
Getting there, he thought.
He ordered a cab and went home.

His phone showed one new message when he got back.
Not Sarah this time.
A number he didn’t recognise. No name. Just a message.
I heard about what happened at the festival. We should meet. I think we have things to discuss that would be mutually beneficial. — V
Xavier stared at the message.
V, he thought. Unknown number. No name. Heard about the festival.
He read it again.
Mutually beneficial.
He set the phone down slowly.
Who, he thought. Who is V.
He looked at the message one more time.
Then put the phone face down and went to sleep.
Tomorrow, he thought.
One thing at a time.
