Infinite Save: I Cultivate Immortality Through Reincarnation
Chapter 593: NegotiationA silent disaster was unfolding repeatedly across every corner of Chenping Continent.
In just three short years, the number of unjustly dead spirits on Chenping Continent had likely reached an unimaginable scale.
This level of catastrophe had, unsurprisingly, drawn the full attention of the continent’s cultivation world.
It was not a natural disaster but a man-made calamity; that much was the consensus of the Five Great Sects.
Yet three years had passed and there was still no progress toward uncovering the truth behind it all.
Chenping Continent, Northwestern Region.
“Have you heard, Hongzhen?”
Riding a chestnut horse, Li Haoran—dressed in pure white robes with a Kongshan Sect Daomen Xingzou token hanging at his waist—rocked slightly in his saddle as he spoke to the blue-robed swordsman riding a black horse beside him.
“In the past three months alone, twenty-nine cities across Chenping Continent have been ‘sacrificed,’ totaling over twenty-seven million deaths.”
Su Hongzhen nodded.
“We cannot allow this to continue. The cultivation world of Chenping Continent rests on the support of the secular dynasties. If that support collapses, the cultivators who have already reached the upper three realms might be fine, but for everyone below the top, the consequences are entirely different.”
Li Haoran said.
Su Hongzhen understood; Li Haoran was right.
These city-by-city “sacrifices” had already gravely disrupted the normal functions of many secular dynasties across Chenping Continent, and the negative consequences were still expanding.
The decay and collapse of secular dynasties would plunge the mortal world into chaos.
Chaos meant population decline and the breakdown of societal order.
The result would be more difficult communication between the cultivation world and the mundane world, and fewer talents available for the cultivation world to recruit.
Take the Five Great Sects as an example: spirit mines, spirit farmlands, and many other trivial matters all required a large number of low-ranked outer court disciples to manage or carry out.
A shortage of spirit stones and various spiritual materials would cause inner court disciples to lack essential cultivation resources and eventually lead to the collapse of the original cultivation system.
In short, tug one strand and the whole system trembles.
Today, the entire cultivation world of Chenping Continent paid intense attention to these sacrificial massacres occurring in secular dynasties in recent years.
Yet until this day, there were still no leads.
The culprit behind all this moved with extreme secrecy.
“Hongzhen, can that... person really be trusted?”
Li Haoran asked from his chestnut horse, clearly harboring doubts about the person he had just mentioned.
“The Mirage Palace is not monolithic; it is split into two major factions.”
Su Hongzhen answered Li Haoran’s question.
The person the two of them referred to was of course the current Mirage Palace Daomen Xingzou, Zhou Jinyun.
In fact, many people had some degree of suspicion about Mirage Palace’s involvement in the disasters, but so far no one had managed to find any real evidence against the sect.
Openly, Mirage Palace had also been investigating everything surrounding these disasters.
Though there was no proof yet, if they could obtain testimony from the current Mirage Palace Daomen Xingzou, Zhou Jinyun, everything would change.
That was precisely why Su Hongzhen and Li Haoran traveled together to Xiling City, to meet Zhou Jinyun who had recently come to visit Kongshan Sect.
During these three years, Su Hongzhen had spent most of his time traveling alone throughout the Northwestern Region of Chenping Continent; by now he and Li Haoran could rightly be called friends.
Their friendship had its roots in a Dao discussion they once had, after which Su Hongzhen truly earned Li Haoran’s trust.
During the past three years Su Hongzhen had repeatedly visited the cities that had been “sacrificed,” trying to find evidence.
But like most people investigating the truth behind the catastrophe, he had found nothing.
Then he heard that Zhou Jinyun would be visiting Kongshan Sect.
It had been eight years since he parted ways in Huangquan City.
In those eight years he had never seen Zhou Jinyun again, and of course he had not heard any news about Chen Yan.
Not long ago Li Haoran had told Su Hongzhen that even though the Grand Elder Council of Kongshan Sect had not yet taken a public stance, the upper three realm cultivators of the major sects could not idly watch the cultivation world of Chenping Continent fall apart.
If matters stayed uncontrollable for much longer, the other four great sects might declare war on Mirage Palace.
The consequences would be unimaginable.
This was a reasonable assumption, provided one did not know that the Five Great Sects were currently trapped in an oddly precarious balance because of that existence atop Heavenly Summit Mountain.
So Su Hongzhen made his decision.
He would go see Zhou Jinyun. It was one of the few means left to prevent the situation from spiraling completely out of control.
He sent a letter to Zhou Jinyun asking her to meet him in Xiling City after her visit to Kongshan Sect was concluded.
Xiling City sat in the southeastern corner of the Xiling Mountain Range.
The Xiling Mountain Range was the future Fallen Sword Mountain Range.
The city lay only a few thousand li from Kongshan Sect, so the residents were long accustomed to Kongshan Sect Immortal Masters passing through.
Two fine horses, one red and one black, walked slowly along the city streets, and on their backs sat two young cultivators, one in green and one in white.
Ahead of them stood a teahouse.
“You want me to go in by myself?”
Li Haoran looked up at the teahouse for a moment, then turned to Su Hongzhen.
Su Hongzhen said nothing, only letting his gaze rest on Li Haoran’s face; his silence was enough to convey his puzzlement.
“To be honest, my relationship with her has never been good.”
Li Haoran forced an awkward chuckle.
“You know, back then the cultivation world of Chenping Continent always compared me and Dao Traveler Zhou as rivals.”
Su Hongzhen could understand Li Haoran’s discomfort.
He dismounted alone and walked toward the teahouse.
When the blue-robed swordsman stepped into the room he immediately saw the cold, composed woman seated alone at a tea table, wearing deep green robes. Compared with eight years ago she had not changed much, only a hint more chill in her eyes and brows.
