“Well, he clearly cannot keep himself in check, if they wish to waddle about in th-” The rest of his father’s speech was cut off and Anos knew Dumbledore had set up some charm or the other.
All of them had sat outside one of the unused classrooms, listening to bickering till recently.
‘I hope that Hermione stopped Draco from trying to sneak out.’ Anos thought, slowly clenching and unclenching his fingers on his right hand.
Alucard sat to his left, currently as a mediator since Maxwell sat next to Alucard, equally as quiet as his friend except hissing whenever he touched his blackening eye.
Harriet was shaking next to him but Anos found that it would not be a good idea for his father to storm out and see him trying to offer sympathies; for now he patted her hand every once in a while and whispered to get her to calm down.
Though it was Simon to her right that needed to be calmed down probably, his raven black hair was disheveled as it fell around his eyes but he was still holding onto the side of the bench as if choking the life out of it.
Simon had gotten a bleeding lip and a few scratches, the former being given by Percy Weasley of all people.
Apparently Simon and Maxwell were so tangled together while fighting that Percy had used a spell to separate them instead of doing it with his own two hands. The result was Simon smashing jaw first into a wall.
It was one thing to hear of the Belmont endurance and another to see it in action, Simon was still bleeding quite badly from his lips, Anos could smell that much but he also made no sound unlike Maxwell who was now whimpering.
“Stop touching your eye.” Madam Pomfrey said as she appeared from behind the hallway, carrying a kit while looking increasingly haggard at 4AM.
She sat down in front of Maxwell, slapped his hand away when he tried to touch his eye again and then treated him quickly.
“You would think you had gotten into a bar brawl with how swollen that eye is, come with me to the clinic after this. And try to be careful that you don’t fall face first into someone’s fist while on the way.” She finished up with him and moved quickly to Simon, who was the most noticeably injured of all of them.
Simon did not so much as breathe sharply when she cleaned the blood from his lips and chin, only replying to whatever she asked of him.
“Here, put this in between your lips and don’t chew.” Madam Pomfrey said, handing Simon a bright blue leaf that he compliantly put between his lips though if the subsequent grimace was from pain or from the taste of the leaf he could not know.
“Well what about the rest of you?” Madam Pomfrey asked, standing up and looking them over.
Anos quietly inclined his head towards Harriet, who was still shaking and thankfully Madam Pomfrey understood, slowly and gently talking to her as if trying to soothe her to sleep.
‘I doubt any of us would get much sleep tonight, and wherever our punishment is in the following weeks.’ Anos considered.
He already knew there will be some letters and other small tasks, detention as well for punishment. He could expect that much from his father. If he was turned over to Filch or not was the immediate question, he couldn’t hedge his bets on not coming across Quirrell in the forest and he certainly didn’t think he would be entirely safe if such happened.
But there was nothing he could do except breathe and listen to Alucard scratch at his ring, his own feeling queerly heavy in his hand.
After what must have been at least half an hour the gate opened, by this time, Madam Pomfrey had already taken Maxwell to the Hospital Wing, citing that the Headmaster could get the punishment to the boy in the morning.
Why she hadn’t taken them too, he didn’t know, but now Anos wished she had as his father stood in front of him, looking over all of them with only a small pause as he looked at him.
Dumbledore appeared from behind, appearing much more affable as he told them of their punishment.
As expected they would get detention, for two weeks whole. They should have had house points taken off if only they had them in the first place so instead they were going to help Hagrid with some tasks.
Harriet seemed to relax at hearing that but Anos’s head was ringing like a be; he wanted to ask for something other than that, anything would do, but he knew contesting their punishment would not work out entirely too well.
Simon and Alucard nodded in confirmation while Anos and Harriet followed their lead. His father for his part looked entirely too angry as their punishment was worded to them.
“I must say I’m terribly disappointed at this behavior.” Dumbledore began to say and Anos had half a mind to tune the voice out entirely but that wouldn’t do him any favors.
So instead he listened to the verbal dressing down they got, though it was certainly less intense then whatever his father would’ve had in store for him. Something involving uncouth behavior unbecoming of themselves as the school’s wards for certain but Anos did not have time to dwell on more as Dumbledore suddenly looked at his pocket watch and then back at them.
“I’m afraid we’ll have to continue this afterwards, I believe all of you have classes today? Good, get some rest then.” Dumbledore spoke and Anos could almost hear the non verbal ‘There is more?’ from his friends as they were escorted out of there straight to their Common Room by his father.
His father for the most part spoke not one word till the end, warning them that detention did not mean their work could be of poorer quality and that their homework would be tested just as strictly as the rest of the class before looking at Anos for a moment and then leaving.
They found Hermione and Draco waiting for them while Lan appeared asleep with his back to the table in the common room.
‘This certainly didn’t go as planned.’ Anos sighed, as he began to explain to the both of them how Maxwell had somehow known about the dragon and tried to sneak in, at which point Simon had taken over mumbling with the leaf in his mouth before remembering he could remove it and continued to speak.
About halfway between explaining about how he couldn’t allow Maxwell to see the dragon Simon’s upper lip started bleeding again and Lan quietly took the leaf and shoved it between their friend’s mouth, though Simon looked ready to bite the fingers off of him.
“No chewing Belmont, unless you want your mouth to taste bitter for a week.” Alucard said, continuing where Simon had left off calmly, explaining the injuries and then speaking about the punishment.
Hermione let out a noticeable breath as he spoke about them having to go with Hagrid on some chores, probably thinking that it was a much better result than being suspended and since Maxwell had not been able to give any proof of the dragon then Hagrid was surely not in trouble and would take care of them.
Anos couldn’t decide if he agreed.
