"Sit down," he suddenly ordered.

Rong Yunzhou stared at Rong Shuyan in disbelief. Ever since they had set foot in this military camp, he had suffered one humiliation after another because of his crippled brother.

His anger had been building up for days, and Rong Shuyan’s attitude only made it worse.

"How dare—"

"We don’t have time to argue." Rong Shuyan suddenly lifted his head and looked straight at him. "If you want to return to the capital with your head still attached to your body, then sit down."

Rong Yunzhou’s face darkened. He let out a heavy breath, trying to hold back his anger. He wanted nothing more than to slap his annoying brother across the face, but in the end, he forced himself to sit down.

Rong Shuyan didn’t pay any attention to his anger. He turned his wheelchair toward the large map spread across the table.

General Zhou and the other officers quickly gathered around them.

Rong Shuyan looked at the two routes marked on the map; the hidden trail through the eastern forest and Blackstone Pass.

"The Southern Wolf Tribe knows both of these routes," he said.

General Zhou frowned. "The hidden trail has already been exposed. They know we’re watching it now."

"And they’ve known about Blackstone Pass from the beginning," another officer added. "They’ve lived in this region for generations."

The hidden trail was no longer useful because Rong Yunzhou’s attack had revealed that the imperial army knew about it. Worse, the captured soldier had already told the Southern Wolf Tribe that they had stationed soldiers at Blackstone Pass as well.

Rong Yunzhou crossed his arms. "Then where else can they go?"

Rong Shuyan fought the urge to roll his eyes because Rong Yunzhou was truly useless.

"There has to be another route," General Zhou murmured as he stared at the map.

One of the officers immediately shook his head. "But we’ve already studied this area. There are no other roads large enough for an army."

Rong Shuyan looked at him. "We may have studied this place for years, but the Southern Wolf Tribe has lived here for generations."

He turned his attention back to the map. "That means they know this land far better than we do. There could be caves, narrow paths, dried riverbeds, or passages between the mountains that aren’t marked on our maps."

His finger slowly moved across the mountain range. "We need to find a way to map this entire area again."

The maps they were using were not new. Over the past few years, the land could have changed many times. Heavy rain, floods, landslides, or other natural disasters could have opened new paths or destroyed old ones.

And while the imperial army only knew what was drawn on their maps, the Southern Wolf Tribe had been living on this land the entire time.

If something had changed, they would know about it first.

"Do we still have the trained scouting hawks?" Rong Shuyan suddenly asked.

Rong Yunzhou frowned in confusion. "What are those?"

Rong Shuyan didn’t even bother answering him. Instead, he turned his attention to General Zhou.

General Zhou hesitated for a moment before finally answering, "After you left the military, the project was put on hold, Your Highness."

Rong Shuyan immediately understood what he meant. Put on hold was simply a nicer way of saying that the project had been abandoned.

The project had originally been Rong Shuyan’s idea.

Several years ago, the military had begun developing a spiritual tool that could connect a soldier’s senses to a trained bird through special talisman papers.

The idea itself was simple.

One talisman would be attached to the scouting hawk, while another would be held by the soldier controlling the connection. Once both talismans were filled with the same qi, they would form a temporary link.

Through that link, the soldier would be able to see what the hawk saw while it flew.

If the project succeeded, they would no longer have to rely entirely on scouts traveling through dangerous areas on foot.

A hawk could fly over mountains, forests, and valleys within a much shorter time while the soldier watched everything from the safety of the camp.

Unfortunately, the project had never been completed.

Before Rong Shuyan was poisoned, they had only managed to make the connection last for a short time. The farther the hawk flew, the weaker the connection became. Sometimes the image would become blurry, while other times the connection would suddenly break.

Without him pushing the project forward, everyone slowly stopped working on it.

Rong Shuyan tapped his fingers against the armrest of his wheelchair. "How many of the hawks are still alive?"

General Zhou thought for a moment. "I’m not certain, Your Highness. The person responsible for training them should still be at the main camp, but I’m afraid we don’t have enough time to bring him here."

Rong Shuyan nodded. "You’re right."

General Zhou seemed to remember something. "But we do have several trained hawks here. They weren’t specifically trained for scouting, but they might still be able to do it."

He paused before adding, "The bigger problem is the project itself. It was never easy to create a link between a person and a hawk. If we start training soldiers now, it could take far too long."

Rong Shuyan looked at him. "What about you, General Zhou? You were part of the program too, weren’t you?"

General Zhou’s eyes widened. "Me?" He even pointed at himself, as if hoping Rong Shuyan was talking about someone else.

"But Your Highness, it’s been years since I last tried it. Even back then, I could only stay linked with my hawk for about five minutes before my vision started to blur."

"I think that can work," Rong Shuyan said with a sigh. "Maybe it can work."

He fell silent for a moment, his fingers lightly tapping against the armrest of his wheelchair.

Then a thought suddenly crossed his mind. "What if..." His voice dropped. "I try it as well?"

He spoke in a low voice, as if he were asking himself the question rather than anyone else, or perhaps trying to convince himself to seriously consider the idea.

After all, he used to be the only one who could stay linked with his hawk for more than thirty minutes.

"Your Highness!" General Zhou, who had caught his words, immediately stared at Rong Shuyan in disbelief. "This General believes it’s not worth taking such a risk. Your qi is already unstable, and we don’t even know whether this plan will work."

Rong Shuyan remained silent for a moment before finally nodding. "You’re right. We’ll have General Zhou try it first."

General Zhou visibly relaxed. "Yes, Your Highness."

Rong Yunzhou, on the other hand, was becoming more annoyed by the second. "What exactly are you two talking about?" he demanded. "What link? What hawks?"

Rong Shuyan didn’t even look at him when he talked to General Zhou. "How many trained hawks do we have here?"

General Zhou glanced at Rong Yunzhou before quickly answering, "Seven, Your Highness."

"Rong Shuyan." Rong Yunzhou’s expression darkened. "I asked you a question."

Once again, Rong Shuyan completely ignored him, treating him as if he were nothing more than air.

Several officers lowered their heads, pretending not to notice the Second Prince’s increasingly ugly expression.

Rong Shuyan turned his attention back to the map. The scouting hawks could help them find another route, but that would take time. Until then, they had to make sure the Southern Wolf Tribe couldn’t reach their supplies.

"Move the rest of our main food supplies tonight," Rong Shuyan ordered.

General Zhou immediately became serious. "Where should we move them?"

"Not to another warehouse."

Rong Shuyan pointed at several areas on the map. "Divide the supplies into smaller groups and bury them in different places.

"Seal the grain and dried food properly first so that moisture can’t get inside. Then bury them somewhere away from the main roads and cover every trace afterward," he explained.

Rong Shuyan moved his finger toward the eastern side of the map. "And do the same with the supplies we moved to the eastern warehouse."

Since the Southern Wolf Tribe already knew that the eastern warehouse wasn’t their main source of supplies, there was no longer any reason to leave anything there. It would be better to take everything back before the enemy could get their hands on it.

"Do it quickly," Rong Shuyan ordered.

General Zhou immediately understood. "Yes, Your Highness!"

After that, General Zhou and the other soldiers quickly left the command tent to carry out his orders.

Rong Yunzhou, however, remained behind.

He kept asking about the things Rong Shuyan and General Zhou had discussed earlier, especially the scouting hawks and the strange link they had mentioned, but Rong Shuyan had absolutely no intention of explaining anything to him.

He simply turned his wheelchair around and asked Eunuch Shen to take him back to his tent.

"Shuyan!" Rong Yunzhou shouted from behind him, finally losing his patience. "When we return to the Capital, don’t think Imperial Father won’t punish you once he finds out how disrespectfully you’ve been treating me!"

Rong Shuyan rolled his eyes. Instead of stopping, he continued on his way as if he hadn’t heard a single word.

"Punish me for what?" he quietly muttered under his breath. "Without me, this entire place would have fallen apart from the very beginning."
