Physician Liu looked at him for a moment before nodding. "Yes, Your Highness."

Mei Lu carefully placed the bowl of medicine on the small table beside the bed. She gave Lin Xueyi one last curious look before following Physician Liu outside.

Once the tent flap fell closed behind them, Lin Xueyi looked at Rong Shuyan.

The embarrassment from earlier was quickly forgotten when she noticed how serious his expression had become.

"What happened?" she asked again.

Rong Shuyan was silent for a moment. "One of the soldiers who was captured by the Southern Wolf Tribe returned to camp this morning."

Lin Xueyi’s eyes widened. "He survived?"

"He did."

Rong Shuyan briefly explained what had happened. The soldier had managed to escape and return to camp badly injured. More importantly, he had brought back information about the Southern Wolf Tribe.

The enemy already knew far more about their movements than Rong Shuyan had expected.

Because of that, he had ordered more soldiers to guard the camp and had begun making changes to their defense.

Lin Xueyi slowly tightened her fingers around the blanket. [So something really did happen.]

She looked toward the entrance of the tent again.

[If the Southern Wolf Tribe already knows this much, then the next attack might happen sooner than it did in the original novel.]

"But it’s alright. We’re trying to minimize the attacks from the Southern Wolf Tribe, and we’ll try to find out where they’re moving," Rong Shuyan reassured her, but it didn’t seem to be enough to make Lin Xueyi feel at ease.

After a moment of silence, Rong Shuyan called her name, "Xueyi."

She immediately looked at his eyes. "Yes?"

"No matter what happens from now on, I will make sure you return to the capital safely," Rong Shuyan stated firmly.

Those words should have made Lin Xueyi feel better, but instead, they only made her more uneasy.

It sounded as though Rong Shuyan was no longer sure that he would make it back from this camp alive.

Lin Xueyi finally asked, "What do you mean, Your Highness?"

"I mean exactly what I said." Rong Shuyan’s voice remained calm. "If the situation becomes too dangerous, I will arrange for soldiers to escort you away from the border. You will return to the capital before anything can happen to you."

Lin Xueyi swallowed hard. "But the Emperor—"

"The Emperor won’t dare to punish you. You’re not a soldier in the first place," Rong Shuyan cut her off. "The worst that could happen is people saying you weren’t a faithful wife for leaving your husband behind. But I believe that’s still better than dying here."

Lin Xueyi was left speechless because Rong Shuyan could say something like that so blatantly.

"Then what about you?" Lin Xueyi asked. Her voice was much softer this time. "Can you go back with me too?"

"That would be impossible for me." Rong Shuyan looked away from her. "A soldier cannot leave the battlefield."

"But Your Highness, you’re not a soldier anymore, are you?"

"I’m not," Rong Shuyan replied. "But they will still see me as one if I run away from here."

It was almost ironic.

Before this, those people had always been so eager to remind everyone that Rong Shuyan was only a former General. That he was no longer a soldier. That his days on the battlefield were already behind him.

Yet the moment he tried to leave the battlefield, those same people would call him a coward for abandoning it.

"Xueyi." Rong Shuyan looked at her again, his expression serious, but this time there was a trace of softness in his eyes. "If I die here, you will still be Princess Consort Rui."

Lin Xueyi’s eyes widened, but before she could say anything, Rong Shuyan continued, "Prince Rui’s Manor was personally granted to me by the Emperor when I received my title. As long as I die while still holding the title of Prince Rui, the manor cannot simply be taken back by the Imperial Family."

"You are my lawful wife. If I die without an heir, you will remain the mistress of Prince Rui’s Manor as my widow. No one can force you to leave without a proper imperial order."

Lin Xueyi opened her mouth, but no words came out. [Why is he suddenly telling me all of this?!]

She and Rong Shuyan might not remain husband and wife for much longer. She also knew that he had no interest in her that way, but that didn’t mean she could calmly listen to him talk about his own death.

After all, Lin Xueyi knew his entire story.

She had read about his life, his suffering, and even his death long before she ever met him.

And she had read that book during one of the lowest points of her own life. Perhaps that was why hearing him speak like this hurt much more than she expected.

It felt as though Rong Shuyan truly believed there was a chance he wouldn’t leave this place alive.

[Is this my fault?]

The thought suddenly appeared in her mind, and once it did, she couldn’t push it away.

[If I hadn’t come here... if I had just stayed as a hotpot beauty, would Rong Shuyan still have ended up in this place?]

She tried desperately to think of another reason. Anything that would prove this had nothing to do with her.

But no matter how many times she thought about everything that had happened, her thoughts always came back to the same place.

It was because of her.

On the other side, Rong Shuyan was still trying to keep his expression calm. He reached inside his robe and pulled out a small folded document that he had prepared not long ago.

"I have already arranged my private property."

Lin Xueyi’s eyes immediately fell on the document in his hand.

"The estates, shops, silver, and other property under my personal name will be left to you. Eunuch Shen knows where all the records are kept. If I don’t return to the capital, he will help you handle everything."
