Before Kyle could raise his foot again to stomp Dylan’s face, a voice suddenly called out to him.

"Kyle! Stop that! Enough. You’re going to kill him at this rate!"

Kyle’s raised foot stopped.

He shifted his focus from Dylan toward Lira.

"Yes. That’s precisely what I’m going to do. I’ll kill him right now!"

His voice was cold, his anger still burning fiercely.

"Don’t kill him!"

Lira pleaded with him again.

Kyle looked at her in confusion.

"Why? Why do you want me to stop? Do you know what he wanted to do to you? He wanted to rape you and kill me! Why are you having sympathy for this scum? It would be better if he’s dead. Who knows who else might end up becoming his target?"

"I’m not stopping you because I care about his life!" Lira replied quickly. "I’m stopping you because if you kill him, you’ll become a criminal too. You’ll have to bear the consequences of killing him, and I don’t want you to destroy your life because of this bastard!"

Kyle fell silent.

’I see...’

His anger had blinded him so badly that he had completely forgotten to think about the consequences.

’I was so blinded by my anger that I actually forgot how to reason properly. Good thing I have Lira with me. Otherwise, I really would’ve killed him.’

Kyle’s anger gradually subsided.

He looked at the knife in his hand before throwing it onto the road.

*CLANG!*

"Sorry. You’re right, Lira. I was blinded by anger for a minute there."

He sighed.

"I was really about to do something irreversible and life-destroying. Thanks for stopping me."

Lira limped toward him, still struggling with the pain in her legs.

"Good. You’re finally back to your normal self. At least you understand that I don’t care about this scum. I care about you. I don’t want you to leave me right after I finally found you when I needed you."

Kyle looked at Dylan with disgust.

"You’re one fucking lucky bastard. Lira saved you."

Lira picked up one of the crooks’ phones from the ground.

"I’ll call the police first."

She immediately dialed the emergency number and explained what had happened.

While she was talking, Kyle looked down at Dylan.

The bastard was still conscious.

Kyle’s anger flared once more.

*STOMP!*

"GRRH!"

His foot landed against Dylan’s body, knocking him unconscious.

Lira glanced at him but said nothing.

...

The police arrived soon afterward.

By the time they reached the scene, Dylan and his remaining cronies were all either unconscious or too injured to put up any resistance. The officers immediately secured the area, collected the knives scattered across the road, and checked the condition of everyone involved before taking Kyle and Lira’s statements.

Fortunately, a surveillance camera from a nearby building had captured most of the confrontation.

At the police station, Kyle and Lira sat across from a pot-bellied officer who was going through the footage on a computer. He watched silently for several minutes, occasionally pausing the recording and rewinding certain parts.

Eventually, he leaned back in his chair and looked at Kyle.

"You are lucky that camera caught almost everything."

Kyle raised an eyebrow.

The officer pointed toward the screen.

"These men were clearly following you two. They chased you, they were carrying knives, and they attacked you first. From what we’ve seen so far, you were acting in self-defense."

Kyle quietly sighed in relief.

’Thank fucking God.’

He had been worried that things might turn against him after he had beaten all of them up. Especially after remembering how much damage he had caused to Dylan.

The officer continued, "We’ll still need your complete statements, and the footage will be included in the investigation. We’ll also need the hospital reports for the injuries, but at least from what we’ve seen, there is no immediate reason to treat you as the aggressor."

Kyle nodded.

"And them?"

"They’re in much bigger trouble than you are."

The officer glanced through the report.

"Assault, criminal threats, carrying weapons, and whatever else the investigation establishes. Your statement about what they intended to do to the woman will also be important."

He looked toward Lira.

"Especially since you were being pursued and threatened."

Lira nodded.

"I understand."

The officer then looked back at Kyle.

"One thing, though. You should’ve stopped once they were no longer a threat. The footage shows you continued hitting one of them after he was already down."

Kyle’s expression stiffened.

He knew exactly what the officer was talking about.

"I was angry," Kyle admitted.

"I can understand that," the officer replied.

"But remember, self-defense has limits. If you ever find yourself in something like this again, protect yourself, get away, and call the police as soon as you can. Don’t turn it into revenge."

Kyle nodded.

"Yes, officer."

The officer closed the file and leaned back.

"Other than that, you two were fortunate. Very fortunate."

Kyle glanced at Lira.

She gave him a small smile.

The officer then handed their belongings back to them.

"You can leave once we’ve finished the paperwork. We’ll contact you if we need anything else."

Kyle stood up.

"Thank you."

...

The police dropped them off at Lira’s home since she was still having trouble walking properly because of the injury in her leg.

Kyle stood awkwardly near the door while Lira sat on the couch, rubbing her sore legs.

"Well... you’re home safely now," Kyle said.

"So I should probably go."

Lira looked at him.

"Go?"

"Yeah."

She stared at him for a moment before quietly saying, "Can you stay tonight?"

Kyle froze like a popsicle when she offered him to stay at her home.

"...Stay?"

"Yes, stay. What else would I mean?"

"I-I know what you mean. I just wasn’t expecting you to ask."

Lira rolled her eyes.

"I’m not asking you to sleep in my bed, idiot. Just... stay here. After what happened, I don’t really want to be alone and it’s already pretty late to go home alone."

"Oh."

Kyle scratched the back of his head.

"Yeah... okay. I can stay."
