Interstellar to 80s: A Scientist's Farming Mission
Chapter 426 - 439: Peach Blossom ManIn the end, An Ning and Luo Li couldn’t come up with the best solution. They gave the rumor a grand total of three minutes of their time.
Once the three minutes were up, they put it out of their minds.
After a quick wash, An Ning took out a brand-new notebook and began to write and sketch, summarizing the day’s takeaways.
Luo Li, meanwhile, was devouring a book. She’d sworn to become the best doctor—not to save lives, but simply to spend as much time as possible at the operating table.
Only at the operating table would she get the chance to wield the scalpel herself.
Luo Li’s existence and diligence made An Ning appreciate how important it was for a genius with... unique interests to have a proper moral compass.
That night, the rumor about An Ning being the long-lost daughter of a tycoon spread, but it didn’t gain much traction.
The students attending university now carried the hopes of their entire families, and sometimes even their entire villages.
To become a phoenix, one first had to find a high branch, and university was that branch.
Studying was the main priority here.
The next day, An Ning and Luo Li were at the track on time, ready for their run.
An Guoping was uncharacteristically running right beside An Ning, shouting at the top of his lungs, "Sis! We’re twins!"
"Sis, I think you were born a few minutes before me!"
"Sis, when we were kids..."
As she ran, An Ning didn’t interrupt An Guoping. ’My little brother is way more worried about this rumor than I am.’
By the end of the morning, anyone who had been out for a run had learned a few personal details about An Ning: she was the older twin, born seven minutes before her brother, and had supposedly been in poor health her entire life.
Just like that, the rumor completely flipped.
An Ning went from being the long-lost heiress of a wealthy family to an inspirational role model, a narrative bolstered by her top score on the college entrance exams.
When the group went from the track to the cafeteria, the lunch lady who normally had a shaky hand when dishing out food suddenly had a steady one.
An Ning’s tray was piled high with braised pork.
"Eat up, you need to build up your strength."
’Build up my strength?’
For someone who could kill a wild boar with a single punch, ’building up more strength’ seemed a little unnecessary.
Still, An Ning could only offer a polite thank you and move along with her tray.
Yang Jianguo, who was next in line, tried to charm the lunch lady with a wide grin, but her "Parkinson’s hand" seemed to shake even more violently.
As Yang Jianguo walked away with just a single piece of braised pork on his plate, he clearly heard the lunch lady mutter, "Such a smooth-talker."
Yang Jianguo was on the verge of tears.
After getting their food, the group was looking for a place to sit when someone suddenly stood up and called out, "An Ning, sit here!"
A student she didn’t recognize practically inhaled the rest of his food and cleared his spot for her.
"Don’t rush, we’re not in a hurry," An Ning said.
An Ning tried to stop him, but the student insisted, "No, no! You’re frail, please, sit!"
The "frail" An Ning shot a glare at An Guoping as she sat down. Holding his own tray, An Guoping looked like he wanted to bury his face in his food. He’d never imagined his words would have this kind of effect.
"Sis... stop looking at me! I... I wasn’t lying!" he stammered.
An Ning’s head was throbbing.
"Just eat," she said flatly.
At her command, the group buried their heads in their food. No one dared to speak.
An Ning looked at the mountain of food on her tray and tried to share some with the others.
But...
Yin Xuemei picked up her tray, whispering, "Don’t give it to me. I don’t want to get beaten up by a mob."
"Me neither! I have a small appetite!"
Luo Li, who could normally put away five steamed buns, slid her tray away. On the other side, Yang Jianguo lied through his teeth, "I don’t like meat!"
You’d never know he was the one practically begging for a few extra pieces just moments ago.
As for An Guoping, he had already finished. Like a well-fed duck, he stretched his neck, and the food visibly traveled down his throat.
An Ning narrowed her eyes. "Aren’t you afraid you’ll choke?"
"It’s fine! Choking to death is better than being glared at by everyone!"
An Guoping went to return his tray, and the others quickly finished their meals too.
Soon, only the "frail but unyielding" An Ning was left at the table.
For the first time in her life, An Ning felt stressed out just by eating a meal.
’Why are those lunch ladies constantly staring at me?’
’And all these students who finished eating but are still hanging around... don’t you have class?’
If everyone were bad-mouthing her, An Ning would have fought back without a moment’s hesitation.
But with everyone being so kind to her, she truly had no idea how to react.
An Ning kept her head down, trying her best to ignore the looks of concern, admiration, and pity from all sides. She just ate. And kept eating.
"Hello. We meet again."
The familiar voice made An Ning look up.
A face as delicate as a peach blossom met her gaze, and An Ning quickly looked down again without responding.
"I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Tao Quan. I’m in Class One of the finance department."
"An Ning."
An Ning started eating faster.
"Slow down. You wouldn’t want to choke."
"We don’t know each other well. Please don’t say things that could be easily misinterpreted."
An Ning put down her chopsticks and left with her tray.
Tao Quan simply watched her retreating back with a gentle, indulgent smile.
After returning her tray, An Ning headed for her classroom.
’But what’s with that Tao Quan? Did he recognize me?’
An Ning didn’t think Tao Quan could possibly be interested in her. ’Someone like him doesn’t seem capable of liking anyone.’
But she remembered that she hadn’t shown her face, and Xiao Lang hadn’t been with her. He was unconscious at the time; he shouldn’t know her name or what she looked like.
An Ning was clueless, but she remained suspicious and wary of Tao Quan’s advances.
Soon, An Ning reached the classroom.
She walked to her usual seat in the back by the door, only to find that it was a little different today.
On the desk sat three bottles of milk and a loaf of bread. A soft cushion had been placed on the chair, with a pillow for back support.
At first glance, An Ning thought the seat was taken and was about to find another.
"An Ning, our class got these for you. You have to take care of your health."
"Yeah, yeah! Drink the milk to get stronger."
"The chair gets cold. Is the cushion thick enough? We can get you a thicker one if it’s not."
An Ning looked at her desk, then at all the boys in her class.
"This... is for me?"
All the boys nodded in unison.
An Ning felt the rumor about her poor health was starting to get out of hand.
"Everyone, I’m all better now. That was just when I was a kid. I run every morning, and I’m in great shape!"
To add credibility to her claim, An Ning held up five fingers. "The kind of shape where I can eat five steamed buns in one sitting!"
"It’s not that easy. Ailments you’re born with are the hardest to get over."
"Exactly. An Ning, don’t worry about it. We all wanted to do this."
"That’s right! You’re the only girl in our class. If we don’t look out for you, who will?"
An Ning tried to explain, but no matter what she said, they wouldn’t believe her.
In the end, all An Ning could do was thank them repeatedly while trying to think of some way to repay her classmates.
As An Ning sat down, a thought occurred to her. ’It’s hard for people to accept a flawless genius without some resentment.’
’But if that genius has a flaw, a weakness, and an inspirational story to go with it... well, everyone is a lot more sympathetic.’
’It seems to close the distance between the ordinary and the extraordinary.’
