Interstellar to 80s: A Scientist's Farming Mission
Chapter 436 - 449: Attending ClassAn Ning sat leaning back in the seat behind the driver—the safest spot in the car—and closed her eyes to rest.
When the car stopped, Yu Zheng opened the door, and An Ning shouldered her backpack and walked onto campus.
Along the way, many people who saw An Ning stared, eager to get a look at the most talked-about freshman.
The student who dared to lead a protest right after school started, who dared to skip class and take a two-week leave of absence at the beginning of the semester.
A legendary girl with an unknown family background and a reputation for being frail.
An Ning was lost in thought and paid no mind to the stares, making her way back to her dorm.
The moment An Ning returned to her dorm and closed the door, her spiritual power stirred.
A message had come from the interstellar side.
An Ning locked her dorm room door, drew the curtains, and opened her spiritual power space.
First, there were three crates of jade and gemstones—worthless in the interstellar civilization, but incredibly expensive here.
An Ning ignored them for now and picked up a letter first.
She recognized the unique spiritual fluctuations within it.
The letter told An Ning to proceed with confidence. The interstellar civilization was what it was today because of the efforts of the Ancient Earth People.
They might have far surpassed Ancient Earth in technology, but without the efforts of Ancient Earth, the interstellar civilization of today would not exist.
Although the interstellar civilization had lost many things, they had inherited the striving, ambitious spirit of the Ancient Earth People.
To borrow a phrase: "The path is long and arduous, but with persistence, the destination will be reached."
Of course, the interstellar support never consisted of just a few words or principles.
Along with the crates of treasures, there was another box.
This box was filled with weapons—high-tech weapons.
The letter said that she was advised not to use them, but if she ever encountered a life-threatening situation, she should not hesitate to protect herself.
After finishing the letter, An Ning smiled knowingly.
’That’s right,’ she thought. ’Without Ancient Earth, where would we have come from?’
’Even if our timelines are skewed and our parallel worlds can never meet, this place is still our root.’
An Ning’s train of thought shifted. She didn’t need to force the current higher-ups to improve the treatment of scientific researchers. She could do it herself.
With this in mind, An Ning slung her backpack on and headed to the library.
Once at the library, An Ning made a beeline for the law section.
An Ning spent the rest of the day immersed in the library, poring over law books.
That evening, when An Ning returned to her dorm, Luo Li was minutely dissecting an insect.
An Ning didn’t disturb the fully concentrated Luo Li. She just picked up her own law books and continued reading.
The next day, An Ning appeared on the athletic field.
After half a month, An Guoping and the others finally saw An Ning again.
From a distance, An Guoping, who had been scanning the area, spotted An Ning immediately and sprinted toward her.
"An Ning!"
"I’m here."
An Ning had missed them as well, so she jogged a few steps forward and ruffled An Guoping’s hair as he ran up to her.
Like a big, goofy dog, An Guoping followed at An Ning’s side as they went over to the edge of the track.
Everyone greeted each other, but An Ning still didn’t see Jiang Xia.
"Hasn’t Jiang Xia come back to school yet?"
"He came to a few classes, but then he took a leave of absence just like you. The teacher said Jiang Xia guaranteed he’d place in the top three on the midterm and final exams."
Yin Xuemei was in the same class as Jiang Xia, so she knew a little more.
An Ning nodded, not dwelling on the matter of Jiang Xia. She first warmed up with everyone and then went for a run.
After the run, An Ning felt like her body had finally come back to life.
During the two weeks she’d spent on research, she’d had no time to exercise at all, and her limbs felt stiff.
After an invigorating run, they all had breakfast together before heading off to their respective classes.
An Ning had only taken a few steps when Zhou Xiaoshan, looking confused, caught up to her. "Master, aren’t you going to class?"
"I am, but I never said it was a math class."
An Ning held up the books in her hand, and only then did Zhou Xiaoshan see them clearly.
"Law? Master, are you switching majors?"
"No. Multitasking suits me, but it doesn’t suit you. Remember to turn in the homework I assigned you tonight."
With that, An Ning walked away, leaving Zhou Xiaoshan with a long face.
Not that he had any time to waste. Between his coursework and the assignments from An Ning, he was practically timing his sleep with a stopwatch.
The legendary freshman, An Ning, was back. Only, she wasn’t attending math classes; she was going to the law department instead.
The news spread like wildfire, but the math department’s teachers weren’t the least bit worried. In fact, many of the younger teachers were even a little pleased.
They were quite supportive of An Ning not coming to their classes.
Meanwhile, the law department’s professors were a bit surprised by An Ning’s appearance but didn’t stop her.
After the first law class ended, An Ning walked from the back of the room to the front and followed the professor out of the classroom.
"What did you say?"
"I said I’d like to read some foreign law books, specifically about patent law."
"No, not that. Did you just say you’ve memorized all our legal statutes?"
"Yes. Do you have any recommendations regarding patent law?"
An Ning pressed on, but the professor opposite her had already opened a law book and started quizzing her.
In the hallway, a rapid-fire session of questions and answers began.
After asking five questions, the professor gave up. His eyes shining, he looked at An Ning and said, "An Ning, you should study law!"
"You’re a genius! A legal genius!"
An Ning shook her head.
"Professor, I’ll admit I’m a genius, but I’m definitely not a legal genius. I just have a very good memory—a photographic one, that’s all."
’A photographic one... that’s all?’
The passing students experienced being on the receiving end of a humble-brag for the first time. The feeling was... peculiar.
In the end, An Ning got a reading list from the professor.
"Some of the books on this list have been translated, and some haven’t."
"Foreign laws are more complicated. The laws in each region have subtle differences."
An Ning looked at the list, which included books in at least six different languages. She looked up at the law professor and asked, "Do you know where the classes for these foreign languages are held?"
"What do you mean? Don’t tell me you’re planning to learn all six of these languages?"
"That’s the plan. I’ll start by memorizing the dictionaries."
After saying this, An Ning nodded seriously and, without a care for the mortal psyches she had just shattered, walked off toward the library.
The law professor looked at the students around him, then at An Ning’s retreating back, then back at his surroundings with a look of disbelief.
"Can you guys...?"
"Professor, no way!"
"Nope!"
"Definitely not!"
The surrounding students’ fervent denials finally helped the professor regain some sense of balance.
’Thank goodness,’ he thought. ’The world is still normal.’
The news that An Ning, after leaving the law department, having already memorized all their textbooks, was now planning to learn six foreign languages spread across campus once again.
As for the news about her photographic memory, everyone was already used to it.
Wasn’t that just standard procedure for her?
For the next three days, the foreign language classes across the entire university were left speechless by An Ning’s sheer dominance.
