Interstellar to 80s: A Scientist's Farming Mission
Chapter 466 - 480: EavesdroppingIn the dorm room, An Ning stood up and took a couple of steps. There wasn’t the slightest sensation of pain in her leg.
She carefully hopped in place a few times. Still no pain, not even a hint of stiffness.
After all, her leg had been in a cast for two months. It was only natural for it to feel a little strange after just being freed.
But thanks to the miraculous medicine from Luo Li’s uncle, it felt as good as new.
"I have to admit, this medicine works really well."
An Ning crouched down and rummaged through the broken plaster with Luo Li. They each picked out an intact piece and stood up.
Luo Li held up her piece of plaster. "This is going to be my next project. I’m curious to see if it would make a good blade."
"Good idea. I’ll make one too, as a small trinket. It might have some surprising uses."
They both placed their plaster pieces on their desks and began to clean up the mess on the floor.
"Luo Li, can this medicine from your uncle be used *before* putting on the cast?"
"Nope."
"Oh... The medicine’s great, it’s just a bit hard on the equipment."
"Yeah, it should come with a complementary tool."
"That’s actually not a bad idea. Tell your uncle to compile a complete set of experimental data—specifically, the shortest amount of time it takes for a broken leg to go from fractured to fully healed. Let me know when it’s ready. We can apply for a pharmaceutical patent and then sell it."
"Sell it? For money?"
The moment Luo Li heard the word "sell," she forgot all about cleaning the floor. She rushed to get ready to leave, eager to tell her uncle the news right away.
This was the first time the Luo Family had a chance to see a real profit. It was an opportunity not to be missed.
"That’s right! Don’t rush, slow down when you run!"
BANG!
An Ning’s answer was a loud slam. The door, which wasn’t very sturdy to begin with, wobbled precariously, teetering on its hinges as if it might fall at any second. It was making An Ning anxious just watching it.
’You might as well just fall apart already.’
CRASH—
An Ning did a backward frog-leap, precisely dodging the crashing door. She covered her mouth with one hand, coughing and waving the other.
The crash sent the plaster dust flying, filling the entire room.
’Well, it’s certainly obedient.’
An Ning didn’t dare to say anything else rash. Sometimes, she was powerless against these strange coincidences.
She silently cleaned up the dorm. Once she finished, An Ning lifted the door with one hand and simply leaned it against the doorframe.
A door that could stop a gentleman but not a villain now stood in the dormitory hallway.
An Ning slung her backpack on and went down to the first floor to find the dorm manager.
"What did you say was broken?"
"The door."
"Oh... I’ll get you a padlock."
"A padlock won’t help. The entire door came off."
The dorm manager, who was halfway through turning around to get the lock, craned her neck back. "What came off?"
"The door."
"What happened to the door?"
"It fell off."
"Fell... where?"
"Onto the floor."
The dorm manager finally stopped asking. She found a form and handed it to An Ning, her eyes full of unspoken questions.
"Fill this out."
"Alright."
As An Ning began to fill it out, the dorm manager asked curiously, "If the door’s broken, how did you lock up?"
"I didn’t."
An Ning handed the form back to the woman. "I’ll have to trouble you to keep an eye on things for me, ma’am. If you see anyone coming downstairs carrying anything too bulky, they’re probably stealing from our room."
And with that, An Ning left, leaving the woman with a formidable task.
The dorm manager started to reach out a hand, then shouted after her, "I can’t possibly—well, I guess I can. Alright, I’ll watch it for you!"
The dorm manager looked up. ’So that’s An Ning.’
She had known there was a student named An Ning for a while now, but she’d come to know of her differently than the other students.
It was because someone had given her some food and asked her, not to give An Ning special treatment, but just to lend a hand if anything came up.
She’d eaten the food a long time ago, but she had yet to help out with a single thing.
After leaving the dorm, An Ning went to look for Jin Youyou—the girl who was inviting her and Jiang Xia to perform at the New Year’s Gala.
Riding her bicycle, An Ning found Jin Youyou in the performance hall, busy organizing a rehearsal.
Jin Youyou’s forehead was covered in sweat, but her face broke into a brilliant smile the moment she saw An Ning.
"An Ning!"
Jin Youyou, standing high up on the stage, waved in greeting.
An Ning waved back and headed toward the stage.
Seeing this, Jin Youyou ran down the steps at the side of the stage to meet An Ning halfway.
"An Ning, your leg’s all better?"
"Just got the cast off. I’m here for rehearsal."
"That’s wonderful!"
Jin Youyou was thrilled about An Ning’s recovery. She took An Ning’s hand, led her back a few steps, and they sat down in a row of seats.
"Something wrong?"
An Ning asked. Jin Youyou nodded.
"It’s nothing major. Just... during rehearsal, don’t pay any mind to certain people. They’re just jealous of your talent and know they’re not even in the same league."
"Oh, that’s normal. They don’t need to have an inferiority complex about it."
An Ning’s deadpan response made Jin Youyou freeze for a moment before she sputtered with laughter.
"An Ning, has anyone ever told you how adorable you are?"
An Ning shook her head. ’No. Absolutely not.’
"Oh, I’m done for. You’re even more adorable like this. It’s a dorky kind of cute."
Ever the unconventional fan, Jin Youyou always managed to find unique things to appreciate. She led An Ning backstage and introduced her to the group.
Some greeted her warmly, others gave her a passing glance, and one person pursed their lips and let out a cold snort.
Jin Youyou was about to speak up for An Ning, but An Ning beat her to it.
"Jealousy is a great motivator. Your performance is sure to be a success."
"Especially you."
An Ning pointed at the girl who had snorted at her, offering what she considered a friendly smile. In response, the girl coldly turned her back.
"Nice, that’s the spirit! Keep it up!"
An Ning shouting encouragement at the girl’s back made everyone backstage struggle painfully to hold in their laughter.
So this was the famous An Ning. Her way of speaking was certainly... interesting.
Jin Youyou had An Ning sit and wait for a bit while she went to take care of some things.
An Ning had no objections and sat down quietly to wait.
After a short wait, someone came and told An Ning to go get a temporary instrument, since she hadn’t brought her good erhu that day.
"Okay, I’ll go right now."
An Ning stood up and followed the student’s directions to a secluded storage room.
Her footsteps were extremely light, and as she neared the storage room, she heard a familiar voice.
"I’ll be in the audience cheering you on."
The male voice was rich and melodious, lingering in the air and filled with deep affection. From that single sentence, An Ning knew it was Tao Quan.
She subconsciously enveloped herself in her spiritual power, completely masking her presence, and hid in a corner.
"Mm, I’ll be waiting for you."
The female voice was as gentle as water, filled with affection and a hint of shyness.
"You’re so shy. What am I to do with you?"
Tao Quan’s slightly seductive voice was met with a coquettish little "Oh, stop," from the girl.
After they whispered sweet nothings for a moment, the girl asked expectantly, "After New Year’s Day, can we make our relationship public?"
