As it was nearly the end of the month, the student body was buzzing about two main things: the upcoming midterms and the changes to the Hero Ranking and Prodigy Ranking.
The midterms were self-evidently important, but there wasn’t much to discuss before the exams actually took place.
The shifts in the Hero Ranking and Prodigy Ranking, however, were a different story. These rankings represented the future movers and shakers.
Furthermore, most of the people on these lists would go on to become major figures even after graduation.
It was precisely because this topic received so much attention that the three posts Little Fatty had published caused such a massive uproar.
A freshman, only two months into the school year, was already proclaiming his intent to take the number one spot. It was nothing short of an insult to all the upperclassmen.
Of course, the world was full of braggarts. If Lin Xinghai had been just an ordinary student, everyone might have dismissed it as a joke and paid it no mind.
The problem was, Lin Xinghai had held the title of "strongest freshman" from the very beginning of the school year. During the monthly assessment, he had challenged his way to 61st place with overwhelming, unstoppable force.
Now, a month later, no one knew just how much he had improved.
So, not long after Little Fatty’s post went up, the comments started flooding in.
"Ye Xin, is this for real? You’re not just messing with us, are you?"
"Little Fatty, what time is your boss’s challenge? Be specific!"
"Yeah, tell us the time so we can come and witness this genius in action."
The vast majority of comments were asking about the time of the challenge. Very few, however, questioned his claims.
Any discerning person could see that even if Lin Xinghai didn’t ultimately take the top spot, it would only be because he hadn’t been cultivating long enough. No one wanted to needlessly offend a genius like him.
Seeing the flood of comments, Little Fatty grew excited. After consulting Lin Xinghai, he quickly published a new post.
"Schedule and Opponents"
The post began by stating that the challenge would take place at 2:00 PM. Following that was a list of the names of those being challenged.
51st: Peng Jashi, 41st: Gu Yongde, 31st... and 1st: Cheng Tian.
The moment Little Fatty published the post, comments appeared instantly, and the buzz was even greater than before.
"Damn! He’s calling them out by name. Wouldn’t it be embarrassing if he can’t make it that far?"
"I think it’s even more embarrassing for the people who were named. Is he saying everyone on this list is just a stepping stone for him?"
"Tsk, tsk. Now this is a show worth watching. Someone should go interview those big shots on the list and see how they’re feeling."
The students, never ones to shy away from drama, filled the comment section with posts that were mostly jeering and trying to stir up conflict.
...
In one of the school’s public Cultivation Rooms, Cheng Tian, the current number one on the Hero Ranking, was busy instructing the members of his team.
He was in high spirits, and for good reason. As the top student on the Hero Ranking, he received 40,000 Credit Points every month. Those resources alone were enough to create a huge gap between him and everyone else, to say nothing of the many other hidden perks.
That was why, even as a third-year who was ready to break through to the next Realm, he was deliberately suppressing his advancement. For one, he wanted to maximize his Blood Qi Power. For another, it allowed him to rake in more Credit Points.
According to his plan, he could wait until his fourth year, right before his internship with the Military Department, to finally break through.
That way, the Credit Points he accumulated during his third year would provide him with ample Cultivation Resources in the Body Shaping Realm. Combined with his already immense reserves of Blood Qi Power, he could rapidly advance to the Body Shaping Realm Middle Stage, or even the Late Stage.
As Cheng Tian was mapping out his future, a member of his team rushed to his side. "Brother Tian! Bad news! Someone wants to challenge you!"
"Who is it? Duan Bin or Shi Yuanren?" Cheng Tian frowned but managed to keep his composure.
’In his mind, only those two could pose any real threat to him. And even then, it was just a threat. He had fought both of them multiple times and had crushed them every single time.’
"Uh... neither of them. It’s that top genius from the first year. He’s claiming he’s going to take number one on the Hero Ranking." The team member said, quickly pulling up the campus forum post on his wrist-mounted computer for Cheng Tian to see.
"Lin Xinghai, is it?" Cheng Tian chuckled. "I’ll admit he’s a genius, but even geniuses need time to grow."
"He only made it to 61st place last month, and now he wants to challenge me? A bit naive, don’t you think? He probably doesn’t understand that the strength at the top of the rankings is on a completely different level from the bottom. Especially for those of us whose Blood Qi Power has surpassed a thousand—our physical conditioning undergoes a massive boost," Cheng Tian said dismissively.
He had kept an eye on Lin Xinghai. The kid’s talent was certainly terrifying, but during last month’s challenge, he’d revealed a fatal flaw: insufficient Blood Qi Power.
Even Peng Jashi, with just over 800 points of Blood Qi Power, had been able to suppress Lin Xinghai. What chance would he stand against Cheng Tian’s nearly 1,500 points?
’If they actually fight, I’ll just crush him with my Blood Qi Power.’
Besides, he didn’t even think Lin Xinghai had the ability to fight his way up to him in the first place.
Advancing thirty or forty spots in just a single month would already be the work of a demon-level talent.
After all, everyone on the Hero Ranking was a genius among geniuses, and they were all improving at lightning speed.
Hearing Cheng Tian’s analysis, the team member felt relieved, but he still asked, "So, should we keep an eye on this?"
Cheng Tian glanced at the post. "Regardless, his potential is immense. It’s entirely possible he’ll be a real opponent for me next semester. In that case, we’ll go and watch. It’s always good to get an early read on an enemy."
This was not an isolated reaction. While many acknowledged Lin Xinghai’s immense potential, it took time to convert potential into actual combat strength. Few believed he could truly reach the number one spot.
At the same time, however, no one dared to underestimate him. As word spread, more and more people became aware of the situation.
...
As 2:00 PM approached, the area around the arena in the gymnasium was already packed to the brim.
The event had even caught the attention of the academy’s instructors, some of whom had come to watch in person.
Among them, of course, was his class advisor, Jian Hua.
His status as an instructor afforded him the best viewing position.
Behind him stood Yan Feijie, Yuan Zheng, Hong Xiuyuan, and a group of other Special Class Students.
He was supposed to have two classes this afternoon, but once news of Lin Xinghai’s challenge broke, none of the freshmen were in the mood for a lecture. They had all rushed over to the arena.
East Sea Academy had no attendance requirements. It didn’t matter if a student like Lin Xinghai never attended a single class, as long as he could deliver results on the monthly, midterm, and final exams.
But if a student failed to perform, their student Level would be lowered. As for Third Class Students, who had no lower Level to be demoted to, they would be expelled.
Since all his students had run off to the arena to watch Lin Xinghai challenge the Hero Ranking, Jian Hua had simply canceled the day’s classes and came over himself, openly and without pretext.
He was eager to see if Lin Xinghai could continue to surprise him.
