For one impossible second, Emilia forgot where she was.

She forgot the lecture hall, the students, and Noah sitting beside her. Everything blurred into the background.

Professor Adrian Ashford.

The name repeated itself inside her head over and over again.

Professor.

Her professor. The man she’d met in a hotel bar. The man she’d spent the night with.

No, this couldn’t be real.

Her pulse pounded so loudly she was convinced the students around her could hear it.

At the front of the room, Professor Ashford accepted a stack of documents from one of the senior lecturers.

He thanked the man with a polite nod. He looked perfectly composed, as though the woman sitting halfway up the lecture theatre wasn’t someone who had woken up in his bed barely a week ago.

".Professor Ashford joins us after several years working in corporate finance," the older lecturer continued.

"He’ll be teaching Advanced Corporate Strategy this semester."

A ripple of applause spread through the room.

Emilia couldn’t bring herself to clap.

She simply stared.

Noah leaned slightly toward her. "You really don’t look okay." He murmured.

She didn’t answer.

The older professor smiled.

"I’ll let Professor Ashford introduce himself."

The room fell quiet.

Adrian stepped forward. He rested one hand lightly against the lectern before lifting his eyes toward the class.

"Good morning." He began.

His voice. Even hearing it again made Emilia’s stomach tighten. It was exactly the same voice that had murmured ’You’re awake.’

The same voice that had asked whether she regretted last night. Only now it sounded cooler, more professional, and measured.

"My name is Adrian Ashford."

His gaze swept slowly across the room. He was simply taking in the faces of his students and when his eyes reached Emilia, they paused briefly.

Less than a heartbeat. Recognition flickered between them, then it disappeared. His attention moved on to the next student as naturally as breathing.

"I’ll be teaching this course throughout the semester."

That was it. No hesitation, or awkwardness. Or even an indication whatsoever that they had ever met.

Emilia blinked.

’Did... Did he just pretend not to know me?’ her inner voice murmured.

She wasn’t sure whether to feel relieved or offended. Perhaps both.

"I expect punctuality." His voice carried effortlessly through the lecture theatre. "I also expect honesty."

The word struck Emilia strangely. Heat crept into her cheeks unwillingly, and she feared she might throw up.

"If you are willing to work, you’ll enjoy this class."

Someone near the front raised a hand.

"Professor?"

"Yes?"

"Are you new to teaching?"

A faint smile touched Adrian’s mouth. "No."

"Then why Blackwood?"

The room grew curious. Even Emilia found herself listening.

"It was the right time for a change."

His response remained simple, with no elaborate explanation, or a life story.

The student seemed disappointed.

"Okay."

A few people chuckled.

Adrian reached for the marker beside the whiteboard.

"Any more questions?"

Silence responded to him.

"Good." He turned and wrote the first topic across the board in neat handwriting.

Advanced Corporate Strategy.

Emilia stared at the words without seeing them. She rubbed her eyes with the back of her palm, and squinted. Still, it didn’t work, so she relaxed.

Her notebook remained completely blank.

Around her, pages turned, and their pens moved. Students wrote notes.

She couldn’t remember how to hold hers.

Beside her, Noah nudged her elbow gently.

"You forgot your pen."

She looked down.

He was right.

It was still inside her bag.

"I’ve got an extra." He smiled, and immediately placed one on her notebook.

She pushed it back toward him. "I don’t need it."

"You’ll need to write."

"I’ll manage."

His expression tightened. "You don’t have to keep treating me like I’m your enemy."

She kept her eyes on the front of the room. "I don’t?"

His voice lowered. "I deserve at least a chance. One last chance."

She finally looked at him. "You had three years." She answered briefly.

His mouth closed.

For once, he had nothing to say.

Emilia turned back toward the front.

She tried. She genuinely tried to listen since she couldn’t see but every time Adrian spoke, every time he walked across the front of the room, and every time his sleeves shifted as he wrote another equation, she remembered entirely different things.

She remembered how rough and gentle he was at the same time, and the quiet kiss he’d pressed against the top of her head when he turned her over in-between sex, before taking her from an angle she never knew existed.

She squeezed her pen tighter.

’Stop thinking about it.’ he murmured to herself

At the front of the room, Adrian continued explaining market structures as though nothing in the world could distract him.

’How? How was he acting so normal? Did men simply... do this? Or had she imagined the connection between them entirely?’

The question lingered for the rest of the lecture. By the time the class ended, Emilia couldn’t have repeated a single sentence he’d taught.

She packed her notebook with shaking hands.

Students immediately surrounded the front desk with questions.

Lucy stretched dramatically. "My brain hurts already."

Emilia forced a smile. "I should go."

"So soon?"

"I..."

She glanced toward the front, and saw that Adrian was answering a student’s question. He never once looked in her direction.

"I just have somewhere to be."

Lucy waved. "See you tomorrow, room-not-divorce girl."

Despite everything, Emilia laughed.

Noah stood the moment she did. "I’ll walk with you."

Emilia eyed him with repulse. "No."

"I’m going anyway."

"I said no." She snapped at him, then picked up her bag and walked out before he could catch up.

The moment she stepped into the corridor, she let out a breath she hadn’t realised she’d been holding.

Students flowed around her, and their voices echoed around. Someone laughed nearby, and everything felt strangely distant.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

Without thinking, she tapped Kylie’s contact.

The phone rang just twice before Kylie immediately answered.

"My favourite future billionaire!" Kylie answered brightly. "Tell me everything. Did you survive your first day, or do I need to start planning revenge?"

Emilia leaned against the nearest wall and closed her eyes.

"Kylie..."

There was a pause.

Her friend’s tone immediately changed.

"Bad first day?" She asked softly, ready to listen.

Emilia let out a weak, almost hysterical laugh. "You could say that."

"What happened?"

Another silence dropped between them, then Emilia whispered,

"Remember the stranger?"

"The hot stranger?"

"Yes."

"The one-night stand?"

"Yes." Emilia affirmed.

"What about him?"

Emilia slowly slid down the wall until she was sitting on the floor outside the lecture hall. Students walked past without paying her much attention.

She covered her face with one hand.

"Kylie..." she swallowed. "he’s my professor."

Complete silence greeted the other end of the line.

"I’m sorry." Kylie finally found her voice.

Emilia sighed.

"I think I heard you wrong."

"You didn’t."

"No..." Kylie laughed nervously. "Repeat it."

Emilia shut her eyes. "The incredibly attractive older man I slept with..." She took a long breath. "Is my Professor. Professor Adrian Ashford."

Another long silence.

Then a deafening scream erupted through the phone.

"KYLIE!" Emilia yelled at her, suddenly alert. Then she remembered Kylie could be that dramatic to let out a scream without reason.

"I’m screaming because I don’t know whether to congratulate you or start praying!"
