The dining room was quieter than Emilia expected.
It wasn’t formal in the intimidating way she had imagined when she had first started visiting Adrian’s penthouse. There was no army of servants waiting around the table, and no elaborate arrangement of dishes covering every available space.
There was simply one meal.
A large ceramic dish sat at the center of the table, still warm enough for steam to rise gently from it. The smell filled the room, rich and comforting.
Emilia stopped beside her chair. She looked at the food, then at Adrian. "You actually remembered."
Adrian pulled out her chair for her. "I usually remember things that matter."
Emilia smiled and sat. She had mindlessly told him about her wish to try homemade Italian foods. She wouldn’t even remember saying that if he hadn’t made this.
He took the seat beside her rather than across from her.
A moment later, the cook appeared carrying a small bowl. "Sorry, dear," she said warmly. "I thought you might want some more sauce."
Emilia immediately smiled. "Thank you."
The woman placed it beside her plate. "And if you don’t like it, tell me."
"I’ll like it."
"You haven’t tasted it yet." The cook laughed.
Adrian looked between them. "You’re already making friends with her."
Emilia looked at the woman. "She made me food."
He raised a brow at her, genuinely curious. "That was enough?"
"Absolutely."
The cook laughed again. "You’re so sweet."
Emilia smiled. "What should I call you?"
The woman hesitated. "Mrs. Collins."
"Mrs. Collins?"
"Yes."
Emilia nodded. "Well, Mrs. Collins, this smells amazing."
"Then eat before it gets cold."
She gave Adrian a knowing look before leaving.
Emilia watched her go. "I like her."
Adrian picked up his spoon.
"You’ve known her for five minutes."
"She gave me food."
"You really are easy to please."
Emilia gave him a look. "Food is important."
He nodded in acceptance. "I’ll remember that."
She finally tasted the meal. Her eyes immediately widened. "Oh."
Adrian glanced at her. "How is it?" he asked softly.
She swallowed. "This is so good."
A small smile appeared on his face.
Emilia took another bite, then another. Adrian watched her with quiet amusement, and she caught him staring.
Emilia paused. She lowered her gaze and continued eating. Halfway into the meal, Emilia decided to speak to him, and tell him random experiences from the week.
For several minutes, they spoke about nothing important.
Emilia told him about the movie from the night before. She complained about one of the characters.
Adrian listened. Sometimes he laughed, and sometimes he disagreed.
At one point, Emilia became so animated that she nearly knocked her glass over.
Adrian caught it before it tipped.
She stared at his hand, then at him. "You’re annoyingly fast."
"Years of practice."
"With glasses?"
"With you."
She smiled. "I wasn’t even doing anything."
"You were about to."
She shook her head and took another bite. "Thank you for not letting it spill." She chewed thoughtfully before turning to him. "What’s your favorite genre of movie?"
Adrian let out a light breath. "I don’t watch movies. I never have."
Emilia blinked. Her eyes widened in surprise. "Trust me, I’ve never met a person who has never watched a movie."
Adrian chuckled. He reached towards her, and gently caught a few strands of her hair between his fingers.
"You’re going to get tired of pushing this away from your face." He murmured.
Emilia blinked as he gathered the rest of her hair. "What are you doing?"
"Helping you eat."
He carefully pulled her hair back, gathering it into a loose ponytail with the tie he had around his wrist. His fingers moved gently, making sure he didn’t pull at her scalp.
"There," he murmured.
Emilia touched the back of her hair, then looked at him with a small smile. "You carry a hair tie?"
Adrian picked up his spoon again. "Your hair was let down, and we were coming to eat lunch. I suspected this would happen."
She laughed softly. "That’s strangely cute."
He raised an eyebrow. "Don’t tell anyone."
Emilia smiled and picked up her spoon. "Your secret is safe with me."
He smiled, and shook his head, and took another spoon out of his meal.
The conversation drifted naturally. It felt ordinary. And she liked ordinary things.
After a while, Adrian placed his spoon down.
"Emilia."
She looked at him. "Hm?"
"What do you think about Switzerland?"
Her expression changed immediately. "Switzerland?"
"Yes."
She slowly swallowed the food in her mouth. "Why?"
"I was thinking about the holiday."
Emilia shook her head.
Adrian’s brows lifted slightly. "No?"
"I want to spend the holiday with my mum."
He watched her for a moment. "You can do both."
"How?"
"We’d only be gone for a week."
Emilia looked at him. "Only a week?"
"Yes."
She lowered her spoon. "When?"
"During the holiday."
She thought about it.
Adrian remained quiet. He didn’t pressure her.
Emilia looked down at her plate, then back at him. "A week?"
"A week."
She hesitated, then sighed. "Okay."
Adrian’s expression softened.
"I’ll join you."
His spoon stopped halfway to his mouth, and he dropped it to his plate with a sharp clink. His phone was vibrating beside him.
Emilia blinked. "Adrian?"
He stared at her for another second before standing. "I’ll be right back."
She frowned.
"Where are you going?"
"I need to take this call."
"Now?"
"Yes."
He picked up his phone. His expression had changed. Only slightly, but Emilia noticed.
He walked away from the table. She watched him disappear toward the other end of the living room.
Emilia looked down at her food.
She smiled to herself. She had expected him to be happy. Instead, he’d looked almost startled.
She didn’t understand why.
A few minutes later, Adrian returned.
His expression was tighter than before. He slipped his phone into his pocket and walked back toward the table.
Emilia looked up. "What happened?"
"Nothing."
She studied his face. "You don’t look like nothing."
Adrian pulled his chair out and sat beside her. "It’s handled."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
She continued watching him.
He picked up his spoon. "Eat."
Emilia narrowed her eyes. She picked up her spoon again. Her expression didn’t look entirely happy, or convinced.
Adrian looked at her.
Then, very quietly, he reached beneath the table and took her hand.
His fingers intertwined with hers.
Emilia glanced down, then back at him. He squeezed her hand once.
"I’m not keeping anything from you. There are just things you don’t need to know," he said.
She gave him a half hearted smile. "I know." She cleared her throat. "I don’t need an explanation."
Emilia squeezed his hand, then she picked up her spoon again.
Adrian did the same.
The tension in his face hadn’t completely disappeared, but he kept it away from her. For now, lunch continued.
