The morning sun streamed through Emilia’s bedroom curtains long before she was ready to face it.
She had barely slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, memories from the previous night slipped back into her thoughts.
She buried her face in her pillow. "This was a terrible idea."
The words sounded sensible.
Unfortunately, they didn’t stop the faint smile that found its way onto her lips. She couldn’t help but love every second of last night.
........
The university campus was already alive by the time she finally stepped out of her room.
Students hurried between buildings with takeaway coffees and backpacks slung over one shoulder. Conversations echoed across the courtyard as lecturers disappeared into their departments.
Emilia spotted Kylie waiting beneath one of the oak trees. Kylie had stepped out earlier for a morning run before she’d go back to Emilia’s room, freshen up, and leave for her campus.
Last night, she crashed with Emilia.
The moment their eyes met, Kylie grinned.
"There she is."
Emilia laughed. "You look entirely too pleased with yourself."
"I should."
"You should?"
Kylie linked their arms as they began walking. "You remember how I disappeared last night?"
Emilia nodded.
"You’ll never believe where I ended up."
Emilia raised a questioning brow at her. "I already know it involves a bathroom."
"It involved the greatest bathroom in the history of mankind."
Emilia smiled.
Kylie launched into the story from the endless queue, to wandering into the private suites and to pretending to be a complete stranger’s girlfriend just to use his bathroom.
Emilia stopped walking twice because she was laughing too hard. "You actually told him you were his girlfriend?"
"My bladder made the decisions."
"And he believed you?"
"Not for a second."
By the time Kylie finished explaining how she’d somehow left with Christian’s phone number instead, Emilia had tears in her eyes from laughing.
"I still don’t understand how these things only happen to you."
"They’re gifts." Kylie shrugged proudly. "I’ll take it."
They reached the path where lecture halls, and campuses separated.
Kylie pointed toward the building behind them. "I have to heed back to your room. Bye for now."
Emilia hugged her. "Happy birthday again."
Kylie kissed her cheeks affectionately. "Thank you." She leaned back. "And no more disappearing into mysterious private rooms."
Emilia rolled her eyes. "I make no promises."
With one last laugh, Kylie waved and disappeared into the crowd. Emilia continued toward the Blackwood lecture hall alone.
She found Lucy already sitting inside Lecture Hall Three.
"You survived last night," Lucy said as Emilia took the empty seat beside her. "Where did you go?"
Emilia turned to Lucy, smiled softly, but said nothing.
Lucy studied her face. "You look... happier."
"I had coffee." Emilia shrugged.
Lucy laughed. "I wasn’t talking about the coffee."
Before Emilia could answer, the lecture hall quieted.
Professor Adrian Ashford walked in. With a dark charcoal suit, and neatly arranged notes, completely composed.
If someone had witnessed only this moment, they would never imagine he’d spent part of the previous evening talking with Emilia and doing the most wild satisfying things to her in a private lounge.
He greeted the class with a calm nod. "Good morning."
The hall settled as they individually opened their books, and laptops.
"As promised," Adrian began, "today we’re looking at consent within contractual agreements..."
His voice carried easily through the lecture theatre.
Emilia opened her notebook. She tried to focus. She truly did. However, every few minutes, her eyes drifted toward the front of the room.
Halfway through the lecture, Adrian’s phone buzzes on the podium. He silences it.
A minute later, Emilia’s phone vibrates beneath the desk. She frowned. She almost ignored it.
Then she remembered they had exchanged numbers last night. Her heartbeat stumbled, and she hesitated briefly.
Keeping the phone low beneath the desk, she glanced at the screen. Her stomach flips, as she unlocks the screen beneath the table.
Adrian: You’re looking at me every three minutes.
She nearly drops the phone.
She glances up.
He’s already writing on the whiteboard, his back turned, and continuing his explanation as though he’d never touched his phone.
She bites the inside of her cheek before replying.
Emilia: I’m concentrating.
"Excuse me." She heard Adrian take permission from the hall with her head still bend down.
A second later, her phone buzzed again.
Adrian: Poorly.
She has to press her lips together to stop herself from smiling. She writes back:
Emilia: Roll your sleeves up.
Several seconds pass.
Without acknowledging the message, Adrian casually rolls his sleeves to his forearms while continuing the lecture.
Around the lecture hall, a few girls looked up almost instinctively. A few even sighed under their breath. Professor Ashford had quietly become one of Blackwood’s worst-kept secrets. Every second, someone developed a harmless crush on him.
Emilia’s heart pounds.
She felt another vibration.
Adrian: Satisfied?
She looks down, smiling despite herself.
Emilia: Not even close.
She paused, and stared at the screen, debating whether she should send it. Then she types:
Emilia: I haven’t stopped thinking about last night.
She presses send before she can lose her nerve.
Across the room, Adrian pauses for the briefest fraction of a second. Only she notices.
He clears his throat, drops his phone, and continues explaining the lecture as though nothing happened.
Her phone buzzes again.
Adrian: Miss Hayes.
Her pulse races.
Another message arrives almost immediately.
Adrian: Pay attention.
She almost laughed at herself.
Across the room, Adrian continued writing across the whiteboard, perfectly composed.
She slipped her phone away.
Lucy leaned over. "You okay?"
Emilia smiled sheepishly. "I think I’m more tired than I realized."
She smiles so hard it almost hurts.
"What’s got you smiling like that?"
The voice comes from directly behind her.
Emilia jumps. She locks her phone so quickly she nearly throws it onto the desk.
Noah is leaning over the back of her chair, trying to peek at the screen.
"I’ve been sitting here for almost a minute," he says, narrowing his eyes. "Who are you texting?"
Emilia slips the phone into her bag before meeting his gaze.
"No one."
Noah doesn’t look convinced. "You’re a terrible liar." He accused her.
"I wasn’t lying."
"You hid your phone." He said with a gushed clipped tone.
"I hid my phone because you were trying to read it."
His lips curved into the same smile she’d once mistaken for charm. "I was curious."
"You lost the right to be curious." The words left her mouth before she could soften them, so they left hardly.
For the first time, his smile faltered.
Lucy looked between them awkwardly before quietly pretending to reorganize her notebook.
Noah rested one hand against the back of Emilia’s chair.
"You’re not moving on that easily. Whatever this attitude is... it ends today."He warned her. "Stop whatever that’s going on with you, and let’s go back to being happy."
Emilia scoffed. She shook her head in disbelief. "I’ve become happier."
His jaw tightened. "Is there someone else?"
Emilia didn’t answer.
She simply zipped her bag shut.
Noah laughed quietly, but there wasn’t any humor in it.
"So there is."
"I never said that."
"You didn’t have to." His eyes searched her face. "I’ve known you for years, Emilia."
She finally met his gaze. "You knew the version of me that kept apologizing. You don’t know me."
His expression darkened. "I wasn’t trying to fight."
Emilia immediately turned to him with a glare. "I wasn’t trying to have this conversation."
An uncomfortable silence settled between them. Before Noah could say another word, the lecture hall fell silent.
Professor Ashford closed the marker in his hand, and eevery student’s attention shifted toward the front.
He gathered his notes with calm precision before lifting his eyes toward the class.
"That concludes today’s lecture."
Students immediately began packing their bags.
"Miss Hayes."
Emilia froze. Her heartbeat stumbled.
Across the room, Adrian’s expression remained perfectly professional.
"My office." He glanced briefly at the clock mounted on the wall. "In ten minutes."
A hush swept across the nearby rows.
Several students looked toward Emilia.
Noah looked from Adrian, to Emilia, then back again. His brows drew together almost imperceptibly.
"You?" he asked quietly after Adrian walked out.
Emilia forced herself to remain calm. "I... probably forgot to submit something."
Noah wasn’t listening anymore.
His eyes remained fixed on the doorway Adrian had disappeared through.
A strange feeling settled in his chest.
Something about the way Professor Ashford had looked at Emilia.... It lasted barely a second.
But Noah had seen it.
