5 Days Later:
"Emilia, baby."
Her mother’s gentle knock sounded against the bedroom door.
"I made breakfast. Freshen up and come have some."
Emilia answered with an incoherent hum, burying her face deeper into the pillow. "Mhm..."
"I’ll give you twenty minutes."
Another sleepy murmur escaped her before she rolled onto her back.
Sunlight spilled through the curtains, warming the room in soft golden streaks. She reached blindly across the mattress until her fingers found her phone.
The screen lit up.
She intended to text Kylie.
Instead, her sleep vanished, and her eyes widened when she saw a particular contact popping up in her screen.
Adrian.
She frowned.
A new message waited for her.
Adrian: Since you’ve decided to be unprofessional and ignore my emails, I’m here.
She saw a second message.
Adrian: It’s been five days already.
Adrian: Speak to me.
Emilia shot upright so quickly the duvet slid onto the floor. "Bloody hell."
She blinked twice before immediately reaching for her laptop. It rested on the chair beside her bed.
She flipped it open.
The familiar loading screen felt painfully slow.
"No..."
Her inbox finally appeared. She saw unread emails sent from him. Her lips slowly parted.
"Oh..."
There they were.
Ten emails, and every single one from Professor Adrian Ashford.
The first read:
Miss Hayes,
I noticed you have been absent from this week’s lectures.
Please inform me if there are circumstances affecting your attendance.
~Professor Adrian Ashford.
The mail was professional, and completely appropriate.
She clicked the next.
It read;
I’ve attached the material covered this week so you don’t fall behind.
Please confirm you’ve received it.
Another mail followed up.
You still haven’t acknowledged any of my previous emails.
Kindly confirm you’ve seen them.
She bit the inside of her cheek.
The fourth.
Miss Hayes,
Ignoring faculty emails is becoming a habit I can’t recommend.
Reply.
Her lips twitched.
She clicked another.
Your classmates have confirmed you’re at home.
I hope you’re recovering well.
Reply when you’re able.
Then another.
I’m beginning to think you’re avoiding me.
There was a pause. Then, beneath it, he wrote:
Professionally speaking, of course.
Emilia covered her face, as she glanced at another email.
Five days.
You’re becoming remarkably stubborn.
Professor Ashford.
She stared at the screen before letting out a laugh she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.
"He actually counted."
Her phone buzzed again. She picked it up. It was Adrian, still waiting. She sighed dramatically before typing.
Emilia: Good morning.
She hesitated, then continued.
Emilia: I apologise.
She paused again, then continued.
Emilia: But I still don’t want to speak to you.
She pressed send.
Three dots appeared almost instantly.
Her eyebrows rose.
Adrian: Good morning.
Another message followed before she could type anything.
Adrian: We need to talk.
Adrian: There’s clearly been a misunderstanding.
She felt another vibration.
Adrian: Then you disappeared from school.
Adrian: And ghosted me.
She folded one leg beneath herself on the bed.
Emilia: I didn’t ghost you.
She smiled to herself.
Emilia: I strategically ignored you.
His reply arrived immediately.
Adrian: You’re ignore when you need to speak?
She grinned.
Emilia: I believe I can do whatever I want.
She rolled her eyes.
Emilia: I’m still not coming back today.
Adrian: I wasn’t asking.
Her smile faded just enough to become suspicious.
Emilia: That sounded very professor-like.
Adrian: It was.
She typed again.
Emilia: You’re very bossy.
A few seconds passed.
Adrian: Only when someone deserves it.
She scoffed.
Emilia: I disagree.
Adrian: You’re welcome to.
Adrian: It won’t change the conversation we’re going to have.
She narrowed her eyes.
Emilia: That’s assuming I agree to one.
The typing indicator appeared, stopped, and then started again. When his reply finally arrived, her heartbeat betrayed her.
Adrian: Keep testing me, Emilia.
Adrian: The next time I see you, you’re not walking away until we’ve finished this conversation.
One final message appeared beneath it.
Adrian: Keep that attitude when you’re standing in front of me.
Adrian: We’ll see how long it lasts.
Emilia stared at the screen. "Ridiculous man." She murmured.
And despite every intention of staying annoyed, the corners of her mouth slowly lifted into a smile.
Emilia: We can’t be in contact. I don’t know who you are.
Adrian: "Then you communicate, and ask the right questions. Not get mad, and ghost."
Emilia stared at the screen for a long moment. She could hear his deep patient voice clearly. Her thumb hovered above the keyboard, then she typed.
Emilia: Communication doesn’t magically make people trustworthy.
The reply came almost before she’d finished blinking.
Adrian: No. It simply gives them the opportunity to prove whether they are.
Her smile faded into something quieter. She hated that answer. It sounded too reasonable for an argument she wanted to win.
She leaned back against her headboard, drawing one knee toward her chest.
Emilia: You’re very good with words.
Adrian: Occupational hazard.
A tiny laugh escaped her. She shouldn’t have laughed. She was supposed to be irritated with him.
Instead, she found herself rereading the emails he’d sent over the past five days.
Every one of them had been impeccably professional. Every one of them had also carried an undertone that only she would recognize.
He had never crossed a line. He had simply... refused to disappear. Her phone buzzed again.
Adrian: How’s your neck?
Her fingers froze. She hadn’t expected that. Not after their exchange.
She looked toward the mirror across her room. The bruises had faded from deep purple to pale yellow, though faint fingerprints still lingered beneath her collarbone.
She sighed, and refused to answer. The phone buzzed again.
Adrian: Is it healing?
She bit the inside of her cheek, and typed nothing.
Adrian: You’re reading these.
Her lips twitched.
"I’m absolutely not giving you the satisfaction," she muttered.
She locked her phone and placed it face-down on the bed.
A whole thirty seconds passed. It vibrated again. She glanced at it. She shouldn’t, but she did anyway.
Adrian: Ignoring me doesn’t count as winning.
She rolled her eyes dramatically.
"It absolutely does."
She stood, carrying her laptop to the desk before deliberately leaving her phone behind. If she couldn’t see it, she couldn’t be tempted.
She brushed her hair into a loose ponytail and reached for a clean sweater.
Her phone buzzed once, then again. Then a third time. She refused to look.
She pulled open her wardrobe. "I’m not entertaining him."
The room fell quiet.
She almost smiled to herself when she heard no vibrations again. He’d finally given up.
Just as she reached for the bedroom door, curiosity got the better of her. Only one quick look was all she needed.
She picked up the phone, and saw three unread messages.
Her heartbeat betrayed her.
She opened the chat.
The first read:
Adrian: Stubborn.
The second:
Adrian: Very stubborn.
Despite herself, she laughed under her breath. Then her eyes dropped to the final message.
The smile slowly disappeared from her face.
Adrian: Fine.
A second bubble appeared beneath it.
Adrian: Now you’ll see me in person.
The last message arrived a heartbeat later.
Adrian: Make sure to keep this attitude intact.
Emilia stared at the screen. "Bloody hell."
For reasons she refused to examine, her heart had started beating much, much faster.
