Music Recommendation: The Cure by Olivia Rodrigo.
...
For several long seconds, Emilia couldn’t look away.
Those eyes.
They remained fixed on her from the opposite end of the ballroom, unwavering amidst the sea of conversations and laughter.
She couldn’t make out the person’s features beneath the warm chandelier light. Only the intensity of that stare.
It made the hairs at the back of her neck stand.
A waiter appeared beside her. "Champagne, miss?"
She turned automatically. "Thank—"
The tray lurched forward. A crystal flute tipped over.
Cold champagne splashed across the front of her aubergine gown, soaking the bodice before cascading down the silk.
The glass remained in the waiter’s hand, and only the drink had fallen.
Emilia instinctively stepped back.
"I’m terribly—"
His apology stopped halfway. Instead of helping, the waiter lowered his head once before turning around, and walked away.
Emilia frowned. "Excuse me?"
He didn’t stop. He didn’t even glance back.
Confusion settled across her face.
Then, she looked back across the ballroom. The same person was still watching.
Slowly, and deliberately, a cold smile spread across their lips. Everything inside Emilia went still.
Her fingers tightened around her clutch.
It wasn’t an accident.
The realization settled with frightening certainty. Someone had told the waiter to do it.
Her heartbeat quickened.
She looked instinctively toward Adrian. He was still speaking with the three executives. Only now, the atmosphere around them had changed.
One of the older men had produced a tablet, and another looked visibly frustrated.
Adrian’s brows were drawn together as he listened, his expression calm but unmistakably serious.
Emilia swallowed.
She didn’t want to interrupt him. Not over this. She looked down at the stain spreading across the expensive silk.
"I’ll just clean it..."
She whispered the words to herself. Taking one careful breath, she began walking.
Every step felt strangely heavy.
She smiled politely whenever another guest glanced at her stained dress.
"I’m fine." She murmured.
After a few more steps, she got the stares, and told them. "It’s alright."
She wasn’t sure whether she was reassuring them, or herself. The farther she walked from Adrian, the stronger the strange feeling became.
Someone was watching her.
She resisted the urge to look behind her.
The ballroom suddenly felt enormous with too many people, too many conversations, and too many strangers.
By the time she reached the corridor leading toward the private restrooms, her pulse had climbed into her throat.
She pushed open the ladies’ room door.
It was empty, and looked more like a private suite. She hurried inside and locked the private suite behind her.
Only then did she lean back against the door. Her breathing came quicker than she wanted. Her hand pressed firmly against her chest.
"Get yourself together..." She closed her eyes. "It was only champagne."
She repeated it twice, yet the feeling refused to disappear.
A sharp knock sounded against the door.
Emilia gasped.
Her heart lurched.
She heard another knock.
"Emilia?"
Adrian.
She closed her eyes in relief. "I’m here."
His voice came again, softer now. "Are you alright?"
She looked at her reflection. Champagne stained the front of her gown. Her cheeks were pale.
She forced herself to smile despite being alone.
"I’m fine."
There was a pause outside the door. "Are you certain?"
"Yes."
She opened her clutch with slightly trembling fingers and retrieved a packet of cleansing wipes.
"I’m just trying to clean my dress."
Silence lingered beyond the door.
"Take your time," Adrian said quietly. "I’ll wait."
His words steadied her. She slowly dabbed the silk, careful not to spread the stain. By the time she was done, it wasn’t perfect, but it was better.
After another minute, she unlocked the door.
Adrian was waiting exactly where he’d said he would be.
The moment she stepped out, his eyes searched her face before they dropped briefly to the front of her gown. He noticed a mild stain.
"You cleaned most of it."
"I tried."
He nodded once, then his gaze returned to her eyes.
"Something happened."
It wasn’t a question.
She forced a small smile. "The ballroom just..." She searched for the words. "...felt crowded."
His expression didn’t change.
"You don’t like crowds."
"I didn’t realise how much until now."
He studied her quietly.
There was something she wasn’t saying, and he could see it. However, pushing Emilia had never worked.
Not once.
So instead, he reached for her hand.
His fingers intertwined naturally with hers. "That’ll be enough for tonight."
She looked up.
"I never planned to stay for the gala."
"You didn’t?"
He shook his head. "I only came because protocol demanded my appearance. I mainly came because you accepted dinner tonight."
A small smile touched his lips. "The part of my evening I was actually looking forward to starts now."
He squeezed her hand gently. "Come with me."
She didn’t argue.
He led her away from the ballroom, down a quieter corridor reserved for the hotel’s executive suites.
The sounds of conversation faded behind them. The silence became almost peaceful.
Adrian stopped before a polished walnut door and unlocked it with a keycard.
He pushed it open.
Emilia stepped inside, and she stopped immediately. The private dining room was breathtaking.
Soft candlelight flickered from dozens of glass lanterns arranged around the room. Fresh white roses rested in elegant crystal vases.
Rose petals traced a winding path across the polished wooden floor toward a table set for two beside floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
The skyline glittered beneath the night sky like scattered diamonds.
A violin melody drifted softly through hidden speakers. The dinner waited beneath polished silver covers.
Everything felt intimate, and thoughtful. As though someone had planned every detail with care.
Emilia turned slowly. "You..." Her voice barely emerged. "You did all this?"
Adrian searched her eyes. "I wanted one evening where the world couldn’t interrupt us."
Her chest tightened unexpectedly.
Then, Rowan’s words echoed through her mind.
"You’ll have to get used to the best of everything... as long as he’s even a tiny bit interested in you."
A strange heaviness settled in her stomach.
Adrian stepped closer. "I’ll take your mask."
His fingers reached toward the ribbon behind her head.
Before he could untie it, Emilia turned abruptly.
The movement caught him off guard.
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Rowan showed me something."
The warmth in the room seemed to disappear all at once.
Adrian’s smile faded. "What did she show you?"
