A few hours later, the suite had settled into a comfortable silence.
The breakfast trays had long since disappeared, and afternoon light spilled through the towering windows, painting warm rectangles across the polished wooden floor.
The only sounds came from the soft tapping of laptop keys and the occasional scratch of a pen against paper.
Adrian sat at the dining table, his attention fixed on a paused security recording. The timestamp in the corner of the screen read five years earlier from Belmont Headquarters.
Employees crossed polished corridors carrying files and laptops, each absorbed in the rhythm of an ordinary workday. To anyone else, it was uneventful footage.
To Adrian, it was another piece of a puzzle that had refused to fit together. He scrubbed backwards a few seconds.
A finance director entered the frame, and another employee followed.
Thirty-seven seconds later, a courier carrying unmarked archive boxes disappeared into a restricted records room.
It was nothing remarkable, unless someone already knew where to look.
His gaze shifted to another window on the screen, one filled with financial records, transfer schedules, and internal audit reports. Several entries had already been highlighted.
Blackwood University.
The same institution kept appearing.
Someone had been moving money through Belmont years before he had uncovered the discrepancies.
Not millions at first.
Small amounts. Small enough to disappear inside legitimate transactions. There was charity to the university, and then there was fraud.
His fingers rested lightly against his chin.
"They’re getting careless," he murmured.
Or perhaps they believed no one would ever think to look this far back.
Across the room, Emilia sat cross-legged near the headboard, surrounded by notebooks, loose sheets, and coloured tabs.
Every few minutes she erased something, sighed quietly, and wrote it again.
Eventually Adrian looked away from the screen. He watched her for a moment before the corner of his mouth lifted.
"Want me to help you with that?"
Without looking up, she shook her head.
"No." She tucked one leg beneath the other and hugged her notebook closer. "The assignment’s due Wednesday morning."
She tapped her pen thoughtfully against the page. "If I still can’t figure it out by then..." she looked up with a small smile, "...I’ll text you."
Adrian inclined his head. "As you wish."
His attention returned to the laptop, though only briefly.
A few minutes later he sensed her watching him. He looked over, and Emilia closed her notebook halfway.
"I’ve only got one question left." She stretched her arms above her head before letting them fall back into her lap. "I’m done until I text you."
Her eyes drifted to the collection of windows on his laptop.
"What about you?"
He glanced at the paused footage. "I’m making progress."
She tilted her head. "But?"
"The pieces are beginning to fit together." He gave her a thoughtful pause. "Not all of them."
She studied him for a second before offering an encouraging smile. "You’ll get there."
"I intend to."
He closed the laptop with a soft click. That was enough work for one afternoon. Crossing the room, he stopped beside the bed.
Emilia barely had time to look up before his hands settled gently around her waist.
"Adrian—"
"What?"
With surprising ease he lifted her just enough to slide her farther onto the mattress before kneeling at the edge of the bed.
She looked down at him, amused. "I think you’ve become very distracting."
"You can deal with that." He raised a brow at her. "Right?"
His hands remained lightly at her waist as he leaned forward. Instead of kissing her lips, he brushed a slow kiss against the side of her neck.
She drew in a quiet breath. "Adrian."
He gave her a soft hum as a response, and then, he rested his forehead briefly against her shoulder.
"There was something I’ve been meaning to ask."
She absent-mindedly played with the sleeve of his rolled shirt. "What is it?"
"When’s your birthday?"
She blinked, stunned. "My birthday?"
"I overheard you and your mother talking about it." His expression softened with the memory. "The morning I drove you to university."
Recognition crossed her face.
"Oh." A shy smile appeared. "It’s next Saturday."
He stared at her. "Next Saturday?"
She nodded.
Before she could say another word, he guided her gently backwards until she was lying comfortably against the mattress.
He caught himself with one hand planted beside her shoulder, careful not to put his weight on her.
She looked up at him, laughter dancing in her eyes.
"Were you planning never to tell me?" He inquired, holding her gaze with a displeased rise of his brow.
"There wasn’t really a reason."
"There wasn’t?"
She smiled sheepishly. "We’ll become strangers in less than a year."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. They just held the other gaze softly. His expression changed almost imperceptibly.
"It doesn’t matter."
She searched his face.
He held her gaze without wavering.
"A birthday matters." His voice was quiet but certain. "And so do the people whose birthdays we’re fortunate enough to celebrate."
Emilia’s smile softened.
She rested her palm lightly against the centre of his chest, feeling the steady beat beneath her fingertips.
"I wasn’t expecting it to matter to you. It’s just for a day."
He looked at her as though it were the simplest thing in the world. "So now I have less than one week."
"One week for what?"
A faint, almost mischievous smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "That’s a surprise."
She narrowed her eyes playfully. "I don’t like surprises."
Adrian said nothing. He softly tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. He smiled faintly, and then his thumb brushed slowly against her cheek.
"This ending in a few months shouldn’t make us afraid to make memories we’ll miss."
Emilia swallowed. Her heartbeat fluttered, and she stared down at his lips. Not saying another word, she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"There’s nothing underneath." She blinked at him.
Adrian’s fingers moved to the v-line of the robe, drawing imaginary lines on her bare chest while he held her gaze. "I know, sweetheart."
