Saturday arrived far more quietly than Emilia had imagined it would. Suddenly, she missed her dad.

Slowly, his image was beginning to fade in her head but she couldn’t stop the feeling of melancholy that rises in her heart.

He would have made a trumpet performance for her on this day if he was here, just as he had always done since she was a baby.

Also, for the first time all week, there was no mysterious package waiting for her when she walk back from class.

There was also no folded note, no navy ribbon, and no familiar handwriting that somehow managed to make her smile before she’d even finished reading it.

She lay in bed for a few extra minutes, staring at the ceiling.

A tiny part of her had expected one, and another part of her reminded herself she was being ridiculous. She wasn’t even in school. She was far away from school, in her mother’s house.

’Today’s the birthday,’ she thought. ’Maybe he’s waiting.’

The thought alone was enough to warm her chest.

She reached for her phone resting on the bedside table. She haven’t left her room yet, and her mother haven’t knocked yet.

Several notifications lit up the screen.

She saw her mum’s notification first.

"Mum ❤️

Happy 21st birthday, my baby. Wake up quickly before I cry without you."

Emilia smiled immediately.

Below it sat another from Kylie.

It read; "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY FAVORITE RESPONSIBLE GRANDMA. ❤️ You’re old now. Love you."

She laughed.

Lucy had sent three voice notes instead of typing.

Rowan had left a birthday card on her desk before disappearing for the weekend. She had brought it with her, but haven’t opened it yet.

Dozens of messages from her Instagram friends followed.

Yet... her thumb lingered over the screen. There was one name she instinctively searched for.

Adrian.

There was nothing from him. Not even a simple "Happy birthday." She stared for another second before quietly locking her phone.

"It’s still morning," she whispered to herself. "He’ll text."

.......

The rest of the day passed almost too quickly.

She spent the afternoon at home helping her mother prepare dinner despite repeatedly being told it was her birthday and she wasn’t supposed to lift a finger.

"I carried you for nine months," her mother had argued while gently stealing the vegetables back from her. Her mother kissed her forehead. "But today you’re my guest."

Emilia laughed softly, and surrendered.

By three in the evening, the tiny apartment had transformed.

Fairy lights hung across the curtains, and fresh flowers sat inside an old glass vase in the middle of the dining table.

The scent of grilled chicken and peppered fish drifted through every room.

Her mother insisted birthdays deserved proper food, even when money had to be stretched thinner than comfort allowed.

The doorbell rang.

"That’ll be Kylie." Emilia hurried toward the door.

The moment she opened it, Kylie literally yelled at her face.

"Birthday girl!" Kylie practically launched herself forward.

Emilia barely had enough time to laugh before her best friend wrapped both arms around her.

"You nearly broke my ribs." Emilia complained quietly with a small laugh.

Kylie pulled back dramatically. "Now you’re twenty-one." She narrowed her eyes. "You look exactly the same."

"I was hoping I’d wake up taller."

"Don’t be greedy." Kylie eyed her. "Your face and body card should satisfy you."

Emilia smiled, her eyes gleaming with love.

Behind Kylie stood Lucy, balancing two neatly wrapped gift bags with an awkward smile.

"Happy birthday."

"Thank you." Emilia hugged her too. "I’m really glad you came."

Lucy smiled. "So am I."

Before either of them could say another word, Emilia’s mother appeared.

"My goodness." She smiled widely. She appeared from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dish towel.

"So this is Lucy."

Lucy straightened instinctively. "Good evening, ma."

She waved her hand. "Oh, don’t ’ma’ me."

Her mother walked over immediately before pulling Lucy into a hug that caught the poor girl completely off guard.

"I’ve heard so much about you."

Lucy laughed nervously. "I hope all of it was good."

Her mother looked toward Emilia. "Mostly."

Emilia raised a brow at her mother. Seeing it was up to no good, she called cautiously. "Mum."

"What?"

"You promised." She reminded.

Her mum smirked at her. "I promised nothing."

Kylie burst into laughter. Lucy blinked between them before laughing too. Within minutes, the four women had settled around the dining table.

Now, conversation flowed so naturally it barely paused long enough for anyone to take another bite.

Kylie somehow managed to tell the story of getting stranded after the illegal street race.

"...and then," she said dramatically, waving her fork for emphasis, "guess who I had to leave with?"

Emilia already knew where this was going.

Lucy leaned forward, having no idea. "Who?"

"That narcissistic man."

"The hotel one?"

"The very same."

Lucy frowned. "What hotel?"

Emilia immediately covered her face.

"Oh no..." Kylie pointed accusingly. "I told you about the bathroom on our way here."

Realisation crossed Lucy’s face. "Oh!"

"Exactly." Kylie groaned dramatically. "I spent forty minutes trapped with a man whose favourite topic was himself."

Emilia laughed into her drink.

Lucy nearly choked on her juice.

Emilia’s mother laughed so hard she had to put her spoon down. Kylie had always been unbothered and disgusted by men but right now, she sounds so different.

Kylie nodded solemnly, and took another sip from her wine. "If confidence paid taxes, that man would solve the country’s economy."

The table dissolved into laughter.

Even Emilia laughed until tears pricked the corners of her eyes. Her phone vibrated against her lap at that moment, and her heart jumped.

She reached beneath the table.

There was a message. Her smile appeared before she even looked. However, her smile immediately disappeared.

It was just a random messgae.

She quietly slipped the phone back into her pocket. Nobody noticed. Or at least, she hoped they hadn’t.

The conversation continued around her.

Lucy was now telling Emilia’s mother about Professor Matthew’s impossible economics assignment.
