Hours later:
Kylie was the first to notice the clock. She glanced toward the wall, then smiled soflty.
"Seven already?"
Lucy followed her gaze. "Oh." She blinked. "We’ve literally been here all day."
"We have," Emilia’s mother agreed with a warm smile. "And I loved every second of it."
Kylie slowly stood, stretching her arms above her head. "As much as I’d happily stay..." She sighed dramatically. "...I should probably let the birthday girl breathe."
Lucy nodded as she rose too. "And let her enjoy her presents."
Kylie pointed immediately toward the gift bags near the sofa. She looked at Emilia. "And don’t you dare open them until we’re gone."
Lucy laughed. "No peeking."
Emilia smiled. "I make no promises."
"Emilia."
Emilia raised her hands above her head, surrendering. "I’m joking."
Her mother chuckled. "I’ll walk you girls out."
She moved toward the front door, already reaching for her keys.
The cool evening air drifted inside as the door opened. Kylie picked up her handbag, and Lucy adjusted the strap over her shoulder.
One by one, they stepped into the doorway.
Lucy hugged Emilia first. "Happy birthday again."
"Thank you."
"And next time..." Lucy smiled mischievously. "...I’m requesting more embarrassing childhood videos."
Emilia groaned. She thinned her lips, supressing a smile. "I regret inviting you."
"I know." Lucy laughed before hugging her one last time.
Then she stepped aside, and Kylie opened her arms.
Emilia walked into them without hesitation.
The hug lasted longer, and warmer. Kylie rested her chin briefly against Emilia’s hair. Then, quietly enough that only Emilia could hear, she whispered,
"Text me what’s going on, Em." She paused.
"You’ve been lost for about an hour."
Emilia’s throat tightened. She closed her eyes for a brief second before giving the smallest nod.
"I will."
Kylie pulled back just enough to look at her Then she leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
It was a simple gesture, but one she’d done countless times before exams, and after most bad days.
Kylie smiled.
Emilia’s eyes softened, and they squeezed themselves into a hug again. Then Kylie finally let her go.
"Happy birthday, birthday girl."
"Thank you."
Her mother smiled fondly at all three of them. "I’ll walk you downstairs."
"You don’t have to," Kylie protested.
"I want to."
The three women disappeared together, their voices gradually fading as they made their way toward the front door.
The apartment slowly became quiet.
Emilia remained standing exactly where she’d been. She could still hear their laughter somewhere outside.
She stood there for several long seconds, looking at the closed front door, and waiting.
For what... She wasn’t entirely sure anymore.
Maybe a knock, maybe the sound of another pair of footsteps, or maybe her phone finally lighting up.
Nothing happened.
After a long while, Emilia lowered her eyes.
A small, disappointed smile touched her lips before disappearing just as quickly.
Then she quietly turned away from the door, and slowly walked upstairs.
...
An hour later, Emilia closed her laptop with a quiet click.
The screen went black, reflecting her tired face back at her for a brief moment before disappearing completely.
She leaned back in her chair and stretched until her shoulders protested.
The last assignment of the week was done.
For the first time in days, there was nothing left to revise, nothing left to submit, and no deadline waiting to ambush her before morning.
A relieved sigh escaped her.
She cracked her knuckles one by one before instinctively reaching for her phone.
The screen lit up immediately.
8:03 p.m.
There was no new messages, no missed calls, and no notifications. Nothing from Adrian.
Emilia stared at the screen for several seconds. Her thumb hovered over his name in her messages.
She could text him first. She could simply write, ’Are you okay?’
Or...
’Did you forget?’
She pressed her lips together. "No." She locked the phone again and placed it face-down on the desk.
If he was busy, if today had become complicated, or if he simply couldn’t..... She stopped herself.
She didn’t want to become that person again. The one constantly waiting, and constantly checking.
She had spent almost the entire day doing exactly that.
She slowly stood. "I need a shower." Maybe warm water would quiet her thoughts.
......
Steam slowly filled the small bathroom.
Hot water poured over her shoulders as Emilia stood beneath the shower, her eyes closed.
The warmth should have relaxed her.
Instead, her thoughts wandered exactly where she’d been trying to stop them from going.
Six days with six surprises. Every single morning. And today, nothing.
She laughed softly at herself. "I sound ridiculous."
She wasn’t upset because she hadn’t received another gift. She wasn’t disappointed because he hadn’t shown up.
She only wanted to know one thing. That he wasn’t ignoring her.
That somewhere out there, he’d remembered.
Nearly thirty minutes later, Emilia stepped back into her bedroom, freshly showered.
Her damp hair clung to her shoulders in loose waves while a soft purple towel was wrapped securely across her chest.
Tiny droplets of water trailed lazily down her collarbone before disappearing beneath the towel.
She rubbed another towel through her hair absent-mindedly as she crossed toward the dresser.
The room was quiet. Too quiet.
Then, she heard a tap, and paused. Her hand stopped halfway through drying her hair.
Her brows furrowed. "Probably a branch." She murmured.
The tree outside often brushed against the building whenever the wind picked up.
She ignored it, and reached for her moisturizer instead.
Then, she heard another tap.
This time the sound was clearer, and more deliberate. Emilia slowly looked toward the bedroom window.
The curtains remained closed.
She waited, and listened. There was nothing. She took another step forward, and then, she heard a double tap this time.
Her heart skipped three beats at once. That... That definitely hadn’t been the wind. Curiosity replaced her disbelief.
Very slowly, Emilia walked toward the window.
Each step felt strangely cautious. She reached the curtains, and her fingers hesitated around the fabric.
Then, she pulled them apart.
Her breath caught.
Someone stood outside.
Tall, and broad shoulders with one hand tucked casually inside a pocket. His other rested lightly against the window frame.
Grey eyes.
Adrian.
Her heartbeat plunged straight into her stomach. She simply stared at him, blinking rapidly, certain she had imagined him.
He lifted one eyebrow. "Emilia."
The sound of her name finally snapped her back to reality.
"Jesus!" She hurried forward, fumbling with the lock before pushing the window open.
Cool evening air immediately rushed inside.
Adrian climbed through with practiced ease before landing lightly on the floor.
Emilia couldn’t stop staring at him. She had never seen him like this outside. No tailored suit, no polished shoes, and no expensive overcoat.
He wore just a fitted black shirt with the sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms, grey trousers, and a pair of white sneakers.
His dark hair was slightly tousled by the breeze.
For the first time, he looked less like a billionaire, and more like an ordinary man with infamous power.
He smiled softly. "Happy birthday, sweetheart." His voice was softer than she’d ever heard it. "I’m sorry I’m coming now."
Emilia blinked once, then twice. The next second she crossed the remaining distance between them.
She rose onto her toes and wrapped both arms around his neck.
Her lips found his.
Adrian’s surprise lasted only an instant before one arm settled naturally around her waist, drawing her closer.
The kiss lingered, warm, relieved, and full of everything neither of them had been able to say over the phone.
When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads rested together.
Emilia looked up at him. "You should have at least texted." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I kept checking my phone."
Something softened in Adrian’s expression.
"I know." He brushed a damp strand of hair away from her face. "I didn’t want to get your hopes up."
She frowned. "What?"
"I wasn’t certain I’d be able to come." His thumb lingered briefly against her cheek. "And I didn’t know who was with you."
His eyes drifted toward the bedroom door before returning to hers. "I didn’t want to be seen with you."
A tiny smile appeared on her lips.
"So..." He glanced toward the open window. "...I used the window."
For one full second, Emilia simply stared at him. Then she laughed. An honest, helpless laugh.
"You climbed to my window?"
"I did."
She shook her head, unable to stop smiling. Her tongue briefly swept across her lower lip as she tried to suppress another laugh.
Adrian watched her for a moment before reaching into the pocket of his trousers.
He produced a small navy gift bag.
It was elegant, and simple. Barely larger than both of his hands.
He held it out to her. "This one’s from me."
Emilia accepted it carefully.
Her eyes narrowed immediately. "Why is it so small?"
He folded his arms. "Should it be bigger?"
"The smaller the bag..." She looked between him and the gift suspiciously. "...the more worried I become."
A quiet chuckle escaped him. "I’ll remember that."
She turned the little bag over once.
There wasn’t any label, and no logo. Nothing that hinted at what was inside. Which somehow made it worse.
Her suspicious gaze slowly lifted back to him.
"What did you buy?"
"You’ll find out."
"I’m suddenly afraid."
"You shouldn’t be." He coaxed her.
"I definitely should."
He only smiled.
Emilia looked down at the unopened gift once more. Then, instead of opening it, she walked to her bedside table. Carefully placed the gift bag on top, and turned back toward him.
Adrian raised an eyebrow. "You’re not opening it?"
She slowly shook her head. "It can wait."
"It can?"
She nodded once. "I’ve waited all day for you." A smile touched her lips. "The gift isn’t the part I missed."
She closed the distance between them again, slipped both arms around his neck, and kissed him once more.
