By Monday morning, Blackwood University had returned to its usual rhythm.
Students filled the walkways between buildings, some carrying coffee, others balancing books against their chests while rushing toward lectures they were already late for.
The weekend seemed to have disappeared overnight.
Emilia stood at the edge of the main courtyard, adjusting the strap of her backpack while checking the time on her phone.
She had barely slept the previous night. She had spent far too much time thinking about the helicopter ride after Adrian left the room.
And, unfortunately, the ridiculous thing he’d said about luxury.
She still couldn’t decide whether she wanted to laugh about it or hide every time she remembered.
She slipped her phone into her pocket.
Her birthday was officially over.
The weekend had passed faster than she expected, and now she was back to lectures, assignments, deadlines, and everything else that made up her normal life.
Or what was supposed to be her normal life.
She adjusted her backpack again and started toward the academic building. She had barely taken ten steps when someone called her name from behind her.
"Emilia."
She stopped, and turned.
Ethan stood several feet behind her.
He had a black backpack hanging from one shoulder, a notebook tucked beneath his arm, and the slightly distracted expression of someone who had been walking while thinking about something else.
When their eyes met, his face brightened.
He smiled.
Emilia smiled back. "Hi."
He walked toward her. "Morning."
"Morning." She responded softly, and they fell into step beside each other.
For a few moments, neither said anything.
It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence.
It was simply the kind that happened when two people were still figuring out how to talk to each other.
They had only recently started spending time together.
A library conversation had turned into working on an assignment together, which had turned into a few more conversations through little texts.
Nothing serious, or complicated.
Ethan glanced at her. "You look tired."
Emilia looked at him. "Bad tired?"
He laughed. "That’s not what I meant." He rubbed the back of his head with a smile. "I meant you look like you didn’t sleep."
Emilia smiled, and they continued walking.
"So," Ethan broke the silence again, "how was your weekend?"
Emilia’s fingers tightened slightly around the strap of her backpack. "Good."
"Just good?"
She nodded. "Very good."
He looked at her suspiciously. "That’s vague."
She shrugged. "I had a nice birthday." She said quietly, with a soft smile.
His steps slowed. "Wait."
Emilia glanced at him.
"Your birthday?"
She nodded.
"This weekend?"
"Saturday." She pointed out.
His eyebrows rose. "You’re serious?"
She laughed softly, and stared at him with a soft glint in her eyes. "Why would I lie about my birthday?"
"I don’t know." He looked genuinely surprised. "You never told me."
"I didn’t know I had to announce it." She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Also, I just met you."
"Doesn’t matter." He disagreed. "You absolutely should have."
"Why?"
"So people can wish you a happy birthday."
She smiled. "You’re wishing me now."
He met her gaze. "I’m late."
"Very."
He put a hand over his chest dramatically. "That’s terrible."
Emilia laughed, and he stopped walking.
She took two more steps before realizing he wasn’t beside her anymore.
She turned.
Ethan was standing there, looking at her with an amused expression. "I’m not letting that go." He said seriously.
"What?"
"Happy birthday."
Emilia smiled. "Thank you."
"How old?"
She narrowed her eyes. "That’s classified information."
He laughed. "I thought we were becoming friends."
"We are."
"Then tell me."
"No."
He raised a brow at her. "Twenty?"
She stared at him.
He lifted his hands in his defense. "I’m guessing."
"Keep guessing." She urged.
"Twenty-three?"
She laughed.
"You think I’m twenty-three?"
"I don’t know."
"You should probably stop before you make this worse."
He grinned. "Fine. Twenty-one."
She looked at him. "Correct."
He pointed at her. "I knew it."
"You guessed."
"I still got it right."
She rolled her eyes with a smile. "Congratulations."
They started walking again.
Ethan glanced at her. "So, did you do anything fun?" He asked.
Emilia thought about it. She thought about the estate, her mum, Kylie, Lucy, the helicopter, the city lights, and Adrian.
She smiled without meaning to.
Ethan noticed. "That smile says something happened."
She quickly looked ahead. "Nothing."
"Nothing?"
"Nothing you need to know about."
"Okay." He smiled. "But now I’m definitely curious."
Emilia chuckled. "I’m still not telling you."
They walked through the courtyard.
Emilia noticed a group of students gathered near the fountain. Someone was taking photographs while another person complained about an upcoming test.
Everything felt normal.
Almost painfully normal, and Emilia found herself appreciating it. There was something comforting about being back here.
Just Blackwood. Just school. Just her.
At least, that was what she wanted to believe.
Ethan glanced at her again. "You know what?"
"What?"
"You don’t look like someone who just had a birthday."
"How am I supposed to look?"
"Older."
She laughed.
He smiled at the sound of her laugh. "You look happy." He shrugged lightly, almost nervously. "From the first day I saw you, your happiness has been contagious, and that’s why I decided to get to know you."
The words caught her slightly off guard.
"Thank you for saying that." She looked at him. "We’re friends now aren’t we?"
Ethan smiled warmly. "Thanks for the honour."
They reached the steps leading toward the academic building.
Ethan stopped. "So, what did you get?"
"For my birthday?"
"Yeah."
She hesitated. "I haven’t opened them yet."
He stared at her.
She laughed. "Okay. Maybe a few things."
"From your friends?"
"Some."
"Family?"
She looked away for a moment. "Just my mum."
He noticed the slight change in her expression but didn’t push. Instead, he nodded. "Well, I’m glad you had a good one."
He smiled, then his expression suddenly changed to bold.
"Wait." He called out.
Emilia looked at him. "What?"
"I forgot something."
"What?"
He stepped closer. "Your birthday hug."
Her eyebrows lifted. "My what?"
He swallowed, as if to brace himself. "You said we’re friends."
"We are."
"Then you get a birthday hug."
Before Emilia could decide whether to laugh or object, Ethan leaned forward and wrapped one arm around her shoulders.
It was quick, light, and friendly. Nothing more than that, but Emilia froze for half a second. Not because she disliked it, but because she hadn’t expected it.
Ethan pulled away almost immediately.
"There." He smiled. "Officially celebrated."
Emilia blinked, then she laughed softly.
She shook her head. But then, before she could overthink it, she stepped forward and hugged him back.
It was just as brief.
A simple, friendly embrace between two people who were slowly becoming comfortable around each other.
Ethan smiled when she pulled away. "Now we’re even."
"Apparently."
He adjusted his backpack. "I’ll see you in the library?"
"Probably."
"Don’t forget the finance area of concentration."
"I won’t."
"And don’t disappear."
Emilia giggled. "I won’t."
He started walking up the steps.
After a few steps, he turned. "Happy birthday again, Emilia."
She smiled widely, and waved. "Thank you, Ethan."
He waved back, and continued toward the building.
Emilia watched him for a second before turning toward the courtyard.
She didn’t notice the office window above her, and she didn’t notice the man standing behind them.
