His voice remained infuriatingly calm, as though they were discussing nothing more serious than a minor disagreement.

Emilia stared at him.

There had been a time when that calmness soothed her. Today, it made her skin crawl.

"It wasn’t an argument," she replied quietly.

"It was one mistake." He defended himself.

"It was betrayal." She told him. "I don’t even know how long you’ve been cheating on me. I can’t tell if it was just that time."

He sighed through his nose, almost impatiently. "You’re refusing to see the bigger picture."

Emilia gasped, genuinely stunned as if she had been slapped. "The bigger picture?"

"Yes."

"You cheated on me, and blamed me for it."

Noah searched her face, as though waiting for the woman who always tried to understand him to resurface, and take over this conversation.

She wasn’t there anymore.

He stepped closer. "Where else would I be?" He asked softly, almost soothing.

Emilia frowned.

"I followed the woman I’m going to marry."

The words echoed through the room.

For one long second, she simply looked at him. She realized he wasn’t joking. There wasn’t the slightest trace of humour in his expression.

He meant every word.

A chill crept slowly down her spine. "You..." she whispered.

He smiled softly. "I wasn’t going to let us end because of one bad decision."

"Noah." She sighed, infuriated. "Stop this."

"I love you."

She sighed at him. "I don’t."

His smile faltered. "What?"

"I don’t love you anymore." She told him firmly.

They landed harder than any scream ever could. Disbelief flickered behind his eyes, then denial.

"No," he said, shaking his head once. "You’re angry."

"I’m done." She sighed at him.

He scoffed mockingly. "You’re hurt." He approached her, glaned at her lips briefly, then into her eyes. "You don’t mean that."

"I do."

"You’ll regret saying it." His jaw tightened. Frustration cracked the calm mask he’d been wearing. "You’ve changed."

Emilia raised a brow at him.

"And I know exactly why."

Emilia folded her arms.

He nodded once. "Kylie."

Her expression didn’t change.

"I never liked her."

Still, she said nothing.

"She’s always had something against me." His voice grew firmer. "Every time we argued, you ran to her."

"She’s my best friend."

"And she filled your head with rubbish."

Emilia’s eyes narrowed.

His eyes hardened. "You stopped thinking for yourself."

A muscle twitched in her jaw.

"Everything was fine until she convinced you every man was the enemy."

Emilia frowned. "My relationship ended because you cheated." She immediately corrected him.

"No." He dismissed it with a shake of his head. "It ended because Kylie poisoned you against me."

"She’s always been the same." He scoffed lightly. "Running through every man she sees and calling it—"

Crack. Emilia landed a tight slap on his jaw before he would complete his statement.

The slap echoed across the room, and his head snapped sharply to the side. The sound rang against the dorm walls before disappearing into stunned silence.

For several seconds, neither of them moved, or reacted to the slap.

Noah slowly turned back to face her.

A vivid red mark had already begun blooming across his cheek. Disbelief filled his eyes.

"You..." he said hoarsely. "You hit me."

Emilia’s chest rose and fell steadily. Her hand still hung in the air, ready to give him another slap across the face, just incase he needed it.

She took one slow step toward him.

"Never..." she said, her voice almost frighteningly calm. She raised her hand again. Not to strike him, but just enough to make him understand she would if she had to. "Never call Kylie a name."

He frowned.

"And never," she continued, "speak about her the way you just did."

The room fell deathly quiet.

She pointed toward the door. "Get out."

Noah didn’t move.

Her voice hardened. "Now, you bloody fool."

He searched her face, looking for hesitation or guilt. He searched for the Emilia who would’ve apologized after defending herself.

He found none. An unreadable feeling crossed his expression.

Then, a pitying small patient smiled crossed his lips. "You’ll calm down." He assured her.

She didn’t answer.

"You always do." He slipped his hands into his pockets and walked toward the door.

His fingers closed around the handle. Before stepping outside, he looked back one last time.

"I’ll wait."

Emilia’s expression remained unchanged.

"Because sooner or later," he said quietly, "you’ll remember what we had."

The door opened, but he did not walk out. He smiled, self assured. "You always come around."

Emilia looked at him for a long moment, wanting for him to leave. When he didn’t, she spoke.

"Noah."

"Hm?" He replied readily.

"I slept with someone."

His smile disappeared. For the first time since entering the room, every trace of confidence left his face.

"What?"

"I slept with someone." She repeated herself, with her chin held high.

His brow furrowed. "When?"

"The day I found out you were cheating."

The colour slowly drained from his face. He simply stared at her ad though he was looking at someone he no longer recognised.

His lips parted, but no sound came.

Seconds stretched between them.

"You..." he whispered.

She held his gaze. "I meant what I said. We’re over."

Another long silence passed between them. Then, almost visibly, something shifted behind his eyes.

He inhaled, nodded once. Then smiled. He slowly forced reality to fit the version he preferred.

"That’s okay."

Emilia blinked.

He took a slow step back into the room and quietly pushed the door shut behind him. The click echoed through the silence.

"I mean..." He rubbed the back of his neck, as though working through a complicated problem. "You were hurt."

She frowned.

"You found out I’d cheated." He took another step. "I understand why you did it."

"No—"

He gently held up a hand, interrupting her. "So..." His smile returned, softer now. "You forgive me..." He pointed lightly toward himself. "...and I forgive you."

Emilia stared at him. He genuinely expected those words to comfort her.

"We can make this work."

She let out a short, incredulous laugh. "You forgive me?"

"Of course." His tone carried the patience of someone explaining something obvious. "We both made mistakes."

"Noah."

"You were emotional." He whispered, not backing down untill she accepts his reality.

"I made a choice."

"So did I."

"No." She shook her head firmly. "You betrayed me."

"And you slept with another man. You weren’t together anymore," he said quickly, trying to erase the distinction before she could hold onto it. "We were just... in a bad place."

"We had broken up."

"We argued."

"We ended." She snapped at him.

"You said that." He smiled patiently. "I never agreed."

Emilia felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.

He looked at her with complete certainty. "We’ve spent three years building a life together." His voice softened again. "I’m not throwing that away."

She shook her head. "I already have."

Noah smiled. "You think you have." He opened the door this time. "I’ll give you a few days." He glanced over his shoulder. "Then you’ll answer your phone."

He walked away, and Emilia listened to his footsteps disappear down the hallway.

They should have made her feel relieved.

Instead, they only made her wonder when he’d be back.
