Adrian stopped.

For one second, he didn’t move. The voice behind him had changed over the years. Or perhaps it hadn’t.

Slowly, he turned around.

She stood several feet away.

A dark scarf covered most of her head, carefully wrapped beneath her chin. A long-sleeved black dinner gown fell to her ankles, elegant enough for the charity event and modest enough to conceal every inch of her arms.

Adrian knew what was underneath. Burn scars.

His eyes hardened.

She raised one eyebrow.

A faint smile appeared on her lips. "Don’t remember me?" She taunt. "Would you want a blow job to hit your memory?"

Adrian stared at her. "Courtney. "

Her smile widened. "See?" she murmured. "You do remember."

Courtney tilted her head, studying him. She gave a quiet laugh. "How disappointing."

Adrian’s expression remained cold. "After you visited my office, I asked you to stay away. Did I not?"

She didn’t respond to that, so he turned away.

He had more important things to deal with. Dante was somewhere outside. Christain was tracking him, and every second mattered.

"Leaving already?"

Adrian kept walking.

Courtney followed behind him. "I saw you got a new woman."

Adrian stopped. His shoulders stiffened.

Courtney smiled. That was the reaction she wanted. She walked closer. "She’s pretty. Really pretty. Rightfully thick. Just the way you love it."

Adrian slowly turned his head. "Stay away from her."

Courtney laughed softly. She stepped closer. "So that’s how serious it is."

Adrian said nothing.

She looked him over. "How good is she?"

His eyes became colder.

"Tell me." She ordered viciously. "Is she better than me? Do you tie her up pretty well?"

He walked past her.

She followed. "Does she know what you’re like?"

Adrian stopped again.

"Does she know what happened to Rowan?"

His fist clenched.

Courtney noticed. "Does she know what you did to me?"

Adrian scoffed. "You did that to yourself."

Her smile disappeared briefly. Then it returned. "You always were cruel when you were angry." She laughed. "She’s young, isn’t she?"

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

"Emilia."

Hearing her name from Courtney’s mouth made something inside him turn cold.

"Don’t say her name."

"Why?" Courtney’s eyes glittered. "Because she doesn’t know you well?"

Adrian stepped toward her.

"You never told me you were adopted. It was really nice finding ojt through charity, even if we were once involved."

He took one more step closer. Courtney didn’t retreat.

"Does she know why you’re with her?"

"That’s none of your business."

"Does she know about her father?"

His expression changed.

Courtney smiled. "I heard the short call with Christian minutes ago. Doesn’t she deserve to know about her father?"

Adrian stared at her.

"You always did have a weakness for broken girls."

His voice dropped. "Enough."

"Did you move into her life because she has daddy issues?"

His entire body went still.

"That’s your pattern, Adrian." She smiled bitterly. "Find someone vulnerable. Make yourself indispensable. Convince her that you’re different."

Adrian’s fingers curled into a fist. "What we had was an agreement."

Courtney nodded slowly. "An agreement." She repeated the word as though tasting it. "Is that what it is with her now?"

"Yes."

She took a step towards him. "Why are you protecting her then? You never protected me." She held his gaze. "You discarded me the moment you were done."

Adrian said nothing.

"Why does her name make you look like that?"

Adrian’s eyes hardened. "You’re wasting my time." He turned to leave.

Courtney’s voice followed him. "Does she know you’re going to leave her?"

He stopped.

She smiled. "Because you always leave."

Adrian turned back.

Courtney watched him carefully. "Or maybe," she continued, "she’ll leave you first."

His eyes narrowed. "You don’t know anything about us."

"I know you."

"No."

"I know exactly who you are."

Adrian stepped closer. "You knew who I was years ago."

"And I still do." She lifted her chin. "I know what happens when you start caring."

Adrian stared at her.

"You become afraid."

A muscle moved in his jaw.

Courtney smiled. "And when you become afraid, you destroy everything before someone else can."

Adrian’s expression became unreadable.

Her smile faltered.

For a moment, something almost vulnerable appeared in her eyes. Then it vanished.

"I made a mistake, Adrian."

He stared at her.

Her lips parted, and her eyes hardened.

"You hurt Rowan." Adrian reminded her.

"She deserved—"

"Don’t." His voice cut through hers.

Courtney went silent.

Adrian’s eyes were merciless. "You don’t get to say her name."

She looked away. "I was angry."

"You were jealous." He corrected her.

"I loved you."

"You wanted to possess me."

Her expression twisted. "What’s the difference?"

"Everything."

Silence stretched between them.

Then Courtney smiled again. "I’ll forgive you." She whispered casually.

Adrian frowned. "You’ll what?"

"I’ll forgive you." She stepped closer. "If you come back."

Adrian stared at her for several seconds, then he scoffed. "You really believe that’s an option?"

Her eyes narrowed. "You still think about me."

"No."

"You wouldn’t be angry if you didn’t."

Adrian’s expression hardened. "You’re confusing disgust with affection."

Her eyes hardened. His rejection hirt her, and he saw it. For half a second, her face cracked. Her eyes became vicious.

"You think she will stay?"

Adrian said nothing.

"Emilia." Her voice became almost mocking. "Do you really think she’ll stay when she discovers everything? Or even, survive?"

Adrian’s patience snapped. He crossed the distance between them in two strides.

His hand closed around her neck, and he drove her backward against the wall.

The impact echoed through the hallway.

Courtney gasped.

Adrian leaned closer. "Don’t you ever threaten her." He warned, his voice low and rough. "Do you hear me?"

Her fingers caught his wrist, to reduce the pressure on his neck. "I’m not threatening her."

"Then choose your next words carefully."

She smiled despite the pressure.

Adrian’s eyes were cold.

"Do you want a make up sex?" Courtney laughed softly. "Just how you like it?" She scoffed, raising her chin to meet his face. "Rough?"

His grip tightened slightly.

"Tell me." She stared directly into his eyes. "You always did look beautiful when you were angry."

Adrian’s expression became disgusted. "You’re sick." He spat out.

"And you loved that about me."

"I loved nothing about you."

She flinched.

He released her.

Courtney caught herself against the wall, breathing heavily.

Adrian stepped back. "Stay away from me."

She straightened her gown. "You can’t run from your past."

"I’m not running." He looked at her one last time.

She moved faster than he expected. She caught his shoulder and spun him around.

His back hit the wall, and she stepped into his space.

"Just how you like it?" She asked again.

Adrian stared down at her.

"Rough?"

Her hand moved toward him, aiming between his legs. He caught her wrist before she could touch him.

"Don’t."

She smiled.

He immediately shoved her away.

She stumbled backward, then caught her balance.

Adrian adjusted his jacket. "You should leave."

Seraphina stared at him. "You really think she’s different?"

He said nothing.

"She’ll leave you."

His eyes lifted.

"Everyone does." Seraphina’s voice softened. "And then you’ll finally understand."

Adrian stared at her.

She smiled sadly. "I’m the only one who never left."

He held her gaze for a long moment. His lips parted, and then he warned. "If you don’t want a second death you won’t escape, stay away from her."

He walked away afterwards, leaving her standing there, and staring at his retarding back.
