Zhang Bao’s commanders immediately spoke up against it.
“Our army has the upper hand. There’s no reason for us to negotiate with the enemy!”
“We’ll massacre Ji County if they dare hurt our brothers!”
“Please reconsider, Earth Duke General!”
...
The one who opposed it the loudest was the one-eyed Yan Zheng. Zu An frowned as the other party's killing intent seeped out.
Zhang Bao raised his hand and said, “We are fighting so that our brothers and sisters can fill their stomachs. We are fighting for a future for everyone. How would we be any different from those corrupted officials if we turn a blind eye to the plight of tens of thousands of our brothers? I have made up my mind on this matter, so speak no more!”
The Yellow Turban Army’s second-in-charge had made his stance clear. The other commanders exchanged conflicted looks, but they quieted down.
But Yan Zheng refused to step down. “How can we move our army of a hundred thousand so haphazardly? We have spent many rations and money to get here. It’d be inauspicious to retreat without doing anything, and it would undermine our army’s morale as well.”
Zhang Bao nodded in agreement. “Commander Yan is right, but I have my plans. Zhongshan Commandery’s Zhang Chun has been bulking up his forces in recent years, and he’s beginning to pose a threat. On top of that, Zhongshan Commandery has always been wealthy. We won’t be wasting our effort if we switch our target to Zhongshan Commandery.”
Zu An widened his eyes. That had been one of his arguments to convince Zhang Bao not to attack Ji County; he hadn’t expected the other party to propose it.
“The Earth Duke General is wise!” the other commanders complimented him. Yan Zheng had no choice but to sing praises of Zhang Bao as well.
Zhang Bao offered to host a banquet to welcome Zu An. He wanted to know more about the Yellow Turban Army, so he decided to stay.
The Yellow Turban Army’s commanders kept offering alcohol to Zu An, hoping to see the latter make a fool of himself. However, his high cultivation and the Ocean Deity’s water control ability made it impossible for him to get drunk, so he heartily accepted all toasts. That won him some favorability from the crowd. At the same time, he also got acquainted with Zhou Cang and Pei Yuanshao.
Yan Zheng drank by himself in the corner, displeased that Zu An was receiving such a warm welcome.
Right as the banquet was about to conclude, a guard relayed a message to Zu An, saying that the Earth Duke General had invited him to his tent for a chat. Zu An was wary that this could be a trap from Yan Zheng.
The guard brought him to Zhang Bao’s tent, and Zhang Bao was really waiting inside. Looking at the other party's mysterious mask, Zu An asked out of curiosity, “Earth Duke General, do you never take off your mask?”
Zhang Bao laughed. “Many people have wanted to see my face, but they are all dead now.”
“Forget it then. I’m not a curious person,” Zu An replied.
“You are interesting.” Zhang Bao examined Zu An. “I heard that the person who defeated Cheng Yuanzhi and Gao Sheng was a nobody, but you are dignified and young. Above all, the airs you showed earlier today are truly admirable.”
“You’re flattering me. It is nothing compared to the Earth Duke General,” Zu An humbly replied. What is Zhang Bao trying to get at here?
“Are you engaged?” Zhang Bao suddenly asked.
Zu An was speechless. He had thought of countless possibilities, but this wasn't one of them.
“No, I’m not engaged.” Liu Bei was indeed not married at this point in time.
“That’s great.” Zhang Bao smiled. “I have a younger sister who is beautiful and talented. If you don’t mind, you can take her as your wife.”
Zu An was bewildered. Cold sweat trickled down his face. He hurriedly stood up and said, “Pardon me, Earth Duke General. Even though I am not married, I have someone I am interested in. I wouldn’t want to hinder your younger sister’s happiness.”
While the Yellow Turban Army appeared formidable at present, its days were numbered. Marrying Zhang Bao’s little sister would make him a rebel as well. That could potentially lead to his doom.
Zhang Bao’s face darkened. “You said that you weren’t married earlier. Are you coming up with excuses because you look down on my little sister?”
“Please calm down, Earth Duke General. I don't have a fiancée, but I do have a lover, and I don’t want to let her down,” Zu An explained.
“That’s not a problem. You can take my little sister as your wife, and your lover as your concubine. You won’t be letting her down.” Zhang Bao harrumphed.
Zu An’s head hurt. “I’m afraid that won’t do...”
Zhang Bao’s face turned cold. “Or do you expect my little sister to be your concubine?”
Zu An regained his composure and replied, “I’ll be frank, Earth Duke General. I have multiple lovers, and I don’t distinguish between wife and concubines. We have been through thick and thin. I’d be a heartless man if I married your little sister for power. I’m certain your little sister wouldn’t want to marry someone like that, either.”
“I didn’t expect you to be a sentimental man,” Zhang Bao scoffed. “Are you sure you have never let any woman down in your life?”
Zu An was taken aback by the question. Heavy emotions loomed in his eyes, and he eventually heaved a deep sigh. “You are right, Earth Duke General. I have let many people down in my life. But we are separated across worlds, so I fear that I might never see them again.”
Zhang Bao trembled. He tried his best to control his tone as he spoke, “If you see her again, will you still let her slip through your fingers?”
Zu An shook his head. “I’ll hold her tight and never let her go.”
“Big brother Zu...” a feminine voice suddenly echoed in the room. It sounded valiant, yet it carried unbound tenderness.
Zu An’s body trembled. He stared at Zhang Bao with a frown, as he could tell that the voice had come from the other party.
Zhang Bao took off his mask, revealing a beautiful woman’s face. She took off her yellow robe, revealing a slender, armored figure. She had bronze skin, well-sculpted abdominal muscles, and sturdy legs reminiscent of a powerful cheetah. She resembled Murong Qinghe, but her disposition felt much more mature, as compared to Murong Qinghe’s youthfulness. She also resembled Mo Xi, especially in terms of their dress-up, but she was less seductive and more valiant.
“Princess Ni Huang!” Zu An exclaimed in astonishment. He hadn’t expected to see her here. This was their first time meeting since they parted ways in the Netherworld’s Asura race territory.
The woman dove into his chest and embraced him tightly. “Big brother Zu, I thought I’d never see you again!”
Zu An hesitated for a second, but he still gently hugged her. It was commonly said that it was bliss to meet an acquaintance in a foreign land, let alone reuniting in the vast Myriad Worlds.
“Big brother Zu, I thought that you had forgotten about me. I didn’t expect...” Princess Ni Huang lowered her head shyly. “I was happy to hear your words.”
Zu An squirmed awkwardly. He was actually thinking about another woman.
