Chapter 101: Chapter 101: Two Dogs

In a private room at a Cantonese restaurant.

Vivian Lowell and Eleanor Rhodes finished ordering. Eleanor then said to the server, "Could we get a large bottle of soy milk, please? I’m craving some!"

The server nodded politely.

Beside them, Caleb Quinn added, "Yes, and please warm it up. Just warm is fine, not too hot."

"Of course."

The server agreed again before leaving the room.

Eleanor shot Caleb a look, her eyes full of grievance. "You’re just like my mom. Whenever I go out for hot pot with her in the winter and want soy milk, she also makes me get it warm."

Caleb froze, clearly not expecting his words of concern to get him labeled as a mom by Eleanor.

Vivian watched the expression on Caleb’s face shift several times and let out a soft laugh. Her laughter seemed to snap him out of it, and he turned to Eleanor. "You rely on your friends when you’re out and about."

"Having a friend like me to look out for you, who knows you’re still weak from your recent recovery and makes sure you drink warm soy milk—that’s a good thing, isn’t it?"

"..."

Although Eleanor didn’t want to admit it out loud, she felt a little warmth in her heart.

’This junior of hers, Caleb, is a pretty nice guy.’

The food arrived quickly.

Vivian placed a piece of white cut chicken onto the plate in front of Julian Faulkner, removed the skin for him, and then gave him the meat.

"?"

Julian glanced at Vivian, a little puzzled.

Vivian smiled, pressing her lips together. "Don’t you always take the skin off before you eat? It’s a bit picky... but it’s no big deal."

"Go on, eat up. I got all the skin off for you. Didn’t Caleb just say it? You rely on your friends. You have a friend like me, so you..."

Before she could even finish, Julian frowned, picked up the piece of chicken, and ate it in one go. He seemed displeased about something, as if he were taking out his frustration on the chicken.

??

Vivian was baffled.

’Did I say something wrong?’

’When Caleb said that just now, didn’t Tanya seem to agree?’

Vivian scratched the back of her neck, thoroughly confused.

This time, Eleanor nearly burst out laughing. She chimed in from the side, "Vivian, who would’ve thought~ It’s only been a few days, and President Faulkner’s place in your heart is getting bigger and bigger!"

"You two~ Hehe! So, did you have a good time... that night?"

CLATTER.

The moment Eleanor finished speaking, the chopsticks in Vivian’s hand dropped right onto her bowl.

They bounced off and landed on the tablecloth beside it.

That night. The memory of that deeply conflicting night resurfaced, and Vivian quickly looked up at Eleanor, trying to signal her to stop talking about it.

’There are so many people here!’

But Eleanor just snickered, a mischievous look on her face.

Vivian could feel the tips of her ears burning. She stared down at the table, feeling a bit distressed, and reflexively reached over to pick up her fallen chopsticks.

’Hmm, I can just wipe them off. They only fell on the tablecloth, it’s not...’

Just as Vivian picked up the chopsticks, Julian, who was beside her, took them away.

He called out to the server, "A new pair, please."

Vivian had already taken out a napkin and was about to say it wasn’t necessary. But as if he’d read her mind, Julian turned to Eleanor and said, "That night was great. Thanks."

"COUGH COUGH COUGH!!"

Vivian immediately started choking, her face turning red. She could only grab the soy milk and take a few gulps to calm herself down.

’Julian is just the worst!’

’Just what you’d expect from a capitalist, from a president. So forceful!’

’If he wanted to get me new chopsticks, he could have just said so! Why did he have to say something like that to shut me up?’

Vivian cursed Julian under her breath. She didn’t dare look up at him. When the server brought the new chopsticks a moment later, she just ate her food in silence.

As she was eating, Julian placed some greens on her plate.

"Don’t just eat meat. Have some vegetables."

"Oh, okay."

Vivian obediently agreed and immediately ate the greens Julian had given her.

A little while later, Julian saw the individual bowls of slow-cooked soup arrive. He picked out the coconut chicken soup, which he knew Vivian liked, and passed it to her.

"Have some soup."

"Oh, okay."

Vivian meekly agreed again. She truly didn’t dare to argue with Julian anymore, afraid he would say something else completely outrageous.

But...

This time, the one to say something outrageous was Eleanor.

Her eyes were wide with shock as she stared at Vivian, muttering, "I saw it. I saw it all! With both my eyes!"

"?"

Vivian gave Eleanor a strange look. Seeing her friend’s sudden look of astonishment, she thought something was wrong and asked, "Tanya, what’s the matter?"

"WAHHH."

Eleanor looked as if she’d suffered a great shock. "Vivian," she said, "do you know how I feel right now? It’s like... I was just a dog, minding my own business on the side of the road."

"Then suddenly, someone came over, kicked me, and stuffed my mouth full of dog food."

"Vivian, my heart hurts so much!"

"..."

Vivian was silent for a moment, then nearly choked again.

’What in the world is she talking about?!’

’Getting kicked and stuffed with dog food... Tanya, how can your imagination be so wild!’

’I-I’m only being this obedient because of Julian’s domineering presence! There’s really nothing else to it!’

"Tanya..."

Vivian really wanted to comfort Eleanor.

But Eleanor kept up her deeply wounded act, and Vivian was at a loss for what to say.

Beside her, however, Caleb patted Eleanor’s shoulder with a helpless expression and said gently, "No, you’re not. You have me. You’re not a dog."

Eleanor turned to look at Caleb.

Just as Vivian’s eyes lit up, thinking that the silly girl had finally understood, Eleanor nodded with great sorrow.

"You’re right. I’m not *a* dog—we’re *two* dogs! Minding our own business walking down the street, when someone kicks us and stuffs our mouths full of dog food!"

"Wahhh, we’re so pathetic."

"..."

Caleb’s expression changed instantly, becoming rather miserable itself.

Vivian truly had to stop herself from laughing out loud. And she noticed it wasn’t just her; Julian seemed to have caught on to something as well, as he pressed his lips together to hide a smile.

The ever-serious Julian rarely showed this side of himself.

The sight of him suppressing a gentle smile made him seem much more approachable and good-natured. Vivian couldn’t help but sneak a couple more glances.

Her gaze clearly caught Julian’s attention.

Julian looked over and asked, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Because you’re handsome!"

Vivian pouted playfully, though inwardly she was delighted.

’Hmm... Looks like Julian’s EQ is pretty high after all. He must have figured out that Caleb likes Tanya, right?’
