Chapter 104: Chapter 104: A World for Two

Vivian Lowell brushed the fluff from her cheek and tossed it into the trash can.

When she looked over at Julian Faulkner again, he was already sitting in front of his computer, handling business. The screen blocked his face, leaving Vivian with a view of only the top of his head.

It was a mass of dark hair.

’His hair looks so thick,’ she thought. ’Not a single sign of thinning!’

Vivian was a little envious.

Just then, Vivian’s phone rang.

Vivian glanced down and saw a message from Eleanor Rhodes. She said she was home safe, had endured her mother’s nagging, and was now lying in bed, about to find a good TV show to watch.

She also asked if Vivian was home yet and what she and Julian Faulkner had planned for their night alone together.

A night alone together?

Vivian looked around.

It was, indeed, just the two of them in the room. But Julian’s mind was completely on his work. Their ’night alone together’ consisted of them doing their own separate things.

"We’re each having a romantic evening with our work."

After typing that, Vivian picked up her phone and snapped a picture of Julian.

In that instant,

Julian, who had been facing the computer, lifted his head. His dark eyes caught Vivian’s every move.

!?

Vivian’s hand trembled. As she sent the message, she hid her phone behind her back like a thief with a guilty conscience.

"Ha, haha!"

Vivian laughed awkwardly and said to Julian, "Didn’t you say you had a lot of work to do? Go on, keep busy. I won’t disturb you."

"But you’ve already disturbed me."

As he spoke, Julian slowly stood up and walked toward Vivian, step by step.

Vivian took a step back.

Unfortunately, the wall was right behind her. With nowhere to retreat, she could only look at Julian with aggrieved, fearful, pitiful eyes and say, "What—what are you doing! Don’t come any closer!"

Julian clearly paid no mind to Vivian’s bluff.

He stood right in front of her, looking down at her. The sheer force of his presence made Vivian instinctively shrink back.

Vivian suddenly felt like she was a little quail.

Cornered by a hawk, who seemed to be contemplating how to eat this quail tonight—steamed or braised.

And she was powerless, completely at Julian’s mercy.

"What were you doing?"

Julian asked, his gaze shifting from Vivian’s face to the phone she was hiding behind her back. He had obviously seen her sneak a photo.

"I wasn’t doing anything!"

Feeling Julian’s intimidating presence, Vivian decided to throw caution to the wind and started spouting nonsense with a straight face. "I just thought you looked really handsome while you were working!"

"I was going to save it and use it as my phone wallpaper! How’s that? Are you satisfied with that answer?"

Vivian decided to turn the tables and tease Julian back.

For a moment, Julian was actually speechless, as if he hadn’t expected Vivian to rack her brain and come up with such a reason to fob him off.

But...

Julian was still the more formidable one.

As a president and a businessman, he certainly knew that being thin-skinned was useless in a ’negotiation.’ He asked, "So, is the wallpaper set? Let me see."

"..." Vivian shook her head emphatically in refusal. "No way! This is my phone, I can’t just show it to you whenever you want! I refuse!"

"Oh..." Julian drew out the sound, not pressing the issue any further.

Vivian let out a sigh of relief. Just when she thought their stalemate would continue with no resolution, her phone rang.

Yep, it was Eleanor Rhodes calling.

Her WhatsApp was ringing nonstop.

The ringing seemed to echo in the quiet room. Vivian felt her scalp tingle, truly unsure if she should answer Eleanor’s call.

Just then, Julian spoke up again, asking with a puzzled look, "Why aren’t you answering your phone?"

With a bitter expression, Vivian took out her phone. Staring at the name "Eleanor Rhodes," she was completely torn.

’Tanya is my best friend!’

’And she’s a girl!’

’It should be fine even if I answer the phone now, right?’

’Our topics of conversation are always wholesome. It’s not like I have to hide them from Julian!’

Vivian shot Julian a glare, thinking he was being a little ’mean,’ and answered the call.

On the other end of the line,

Eleanor seemed a bit bored. After a yawn, she noticed Vivian had picked up and asked curiously, "Vivian, what are you doing? Why did it take you so long to answer?"

"Sigh, seeing as your romantic night for two is so boring, how about I keep you company for a chat?"

"Honestly, Julian Faulkner... Is he that unromantic? He finally comes home for the night to be with his wife, and all he can think about is work?"

"Hey, do you think he’s on his man-period or something? How can he not have any other ideas?"

"..."

Listening to Eleanor go on and on, Vivian had the strong urge to hang up. She could already feel that Julian, this firecracker in front of her, had just been lit.

She could smell the gunpowder.

After finishing her tirade, Eleanor waited for Vivian’s response. When she was met with silence, she asked again, "Vivian, are you there?"

"I’m here..."

Vivian started, a little awkwardly. Just as she was wondering how to dodge this dreadful topic, Julian suddenly spoke.

"Eleanor Rhodes."

Julian’s tone was flat, making it impossible to tell if he was pleased or not. He said, "I think you’re right. It’s not good to finally be home for a night for two and only think about work."

"Now, I plan to have that night for two with Vivian Lowell. Could you leave her to me?"

The moment he finished speaking,

a muffled grunt came from the other end of the line, as if Eleanor’s phone had fallen on the bed and hit her. She quickly picked it back up and laughed awkwardly.

"Hahaha, of course, of course, President Faulkner, you two carry on~ Vivian, I think I’m getting a little sleepy and need to rest now. Good night, mwah~"

With that, Eleanor hung up.

The WhatsApp call ended with a BEEP.

And then, Vivian felt the room fall completely silent.

At that moment, Julian’s hand reached out. He asked, "So. What exactly was going on while I was working? Hmm?"

Vivian pouted, feeling like she wanted to cry.

She felt now...

...that she wasn’t just at his mercy anymore.

She was about to be... washed clean and eaten as a beautiful meal.
