Kicked Out, Flash-Married, and Now He Won't Let Me Go
Chapter 112: So GoodChapter 112: Chapter 112: So Good
Inside the carrier, a pure white, long-haired Lion Cat, two little white kittens, and three small orange kittens were huddled closely together.
These cats were quite friendly. When Vivian Lowell approached, they didn’t hiss at her. They just shrank into the corner, looking a bit frightened. Their tiny eyes were so pitiful and helpless that Vivian couldn’t help but want to reach out and pet them.
Eleanor Rhodes was absolutely delighted as she looked at their "bountiful harvest" in the carrier. "Aren’t they? These little kittens are gorgeous!
"Even though they’re a little dirty, you can’t hide their good looks! Plus, they all seem relatively healthy. We’ll give them deworming treatments and full check-ups when we get back.
"If they have antibodies, we’ll schedule their vaccinations, and then they’ll be ready for adoption.
"Vivian, you have no idea. Since we reopened, we’ve had so many people coming in to adopt. The cages at the clinic are almost entirely empty, except for a few longtime residents.
"Oh, right! I’m also planning to expand our services..."
Eleanor chatted away gleefully. Vivian had actually already heard most of this from Caleb Quinn, but seeing Eleanor in such radiant spirits brought a smile to her face. By the time she finished speaking, they had exited the mall and arrived at the underground parking garage.
Eleanor was planning to head to the next location to catch more cats. Seeing that it was already noon, Vivian suggested, "Why don’t we grab lunch first? Afterward, I’ll take the cats back to the clinic to settle them in, and then I need to swing by the office."
"Mhm, sounds good. Thanks for the hard work, Vivian!"
For lunch, Vivian had originally wanted to keep things simple—grabbing a bite at a random roadside noodle shop would have been fine. But Julian Faulkner seemed highly dissatisfied with the street food stalls.
"There are flies," he noted with a hint of disgust, steering Vivian into a Chinese restaurant instead.
Though the restaurant wasn’t particularly upscale and mainly served fast food, the hygiene standards looked vastly better. Julian’s expression softened slightly as he brought Vivian a bowl of soup. "American ginseng and black-bone chicken soup. Have some."
With that, Julian opened the lid. He even thoughtfully blew on the soup, carefully skimming off the layer of oil floating on the surface.
Vivian loved soup, but she hated it when it was too oily. Whenever she had soup at the Faulkner family home, Ms. Shaw would always strain the oil out. Eating out without Ms. Shaw meant Vivian naturally had to do it herself. She hadn’t expected Julian to actually notice this small detail about her!
"Thank you, Julian," Vivian said, immediately flashing him a bright smile.
Just a moment ago, she had been a little annoyed by Julian’s fussiness over the street stalls. She had just wanted to grab a quick bite because she was starving, but Julian’s germaphobia had flared up, making him overly picky. Well... to be fair, a nicer-looking restaurant definitely had its advantages.
Of course, what Vivian didn’t know was that while Julian did have a bit of germaphobia, his steadfast refusal to let her eat at those "fly-infested" restaurants was entirely because he was worried she would eat something unsanitary and end up with a stomachache. Above all else, her health and safety were what mattered most.
After lunch, Eleanor grabbed the cat traps and set off again. Because Caleb Quinn had to return to Aethelburg University for classes, he couldn’t tag along with her. Vivian felt a little worried for her friend, but she had her own tasks to handle: settling the kittens and making a trip back to the office.
"Tanya, please be careful. If anything comes up, remember to call me, okay?"
"I will!" Eleanor promised, grabbing the traps and heading out.
It was past one in the afternoon by the time they returned to the pet clinic. The place was still bustling with people. The receptionist was struggling to juggle greeting customers and wolfing down her takeout, looking completely overwhelmed.
Vivian thought, "We really are a bit short-staffed," as she and Julian entered the kitten boarding room.
Inside, the twenty-odd cages that used to be fully occupied now held only three or four kittens. A lot of people had come in for adoptions today. Because the kittens had just been taken away, the staff hadn’t yet had time to clean the cages.
Staring at the massive cleanup job ahead, Vivian couldn’t help but sigh. Just as she was about to put on her gloves and dump out the soiled cat litter, Julian sprang into action beside her. She had no idea where he had found a pair of gloves and an apron, but he was already fully geared up, looking like a professional housekeeper as he got to work.
Vivian was taken aback. She had actually seen this side of Julian before. On her very first night coming home with him, he had worn an apron to cook for Grandma Faulkner. At the time, he had looked completely different from his usual demeanor at the company.
At home, Julian was a considerate and meticulous grandson to his grandmother, the absolute picture of a devoted family man. At the office, he was decisive and possessed crystal-clear analytical skills, the absolute picture of a brilliant CEO and boss.
She thought, "Hmm... if things were real between us, wouldn’t Julian make a great husband, too?"
Besides, he had promised that he would never break up with her. Vivian’s heart gave a sudden twinge. She genuinely couldn’t bear to let go of such a wonderful man. Once the Lowell family’s issues were resolved, did she really have to pack up and leave immediately?
As she stood there hesitating, Julian glanced back at her. "Why are you spacing out? Didn’t you say you need to head back to the office once we’re done here?"
"Oh, right..." Snapping out of her daze, Vivian quickly began to help him clean.
She suddenly realized something. While Julian treated her exceptionally well, his pampering wasn’t unconditional or without boundaries. He wouldn’t needlessly interfere with tasks that Vivian was perfectly capable of handling herself. He refused to treat her like a useless doll; the person who stood beside him needed to be someone who was truly capable of fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with him.
And Vivian was fully capable of being that person.
After cleaning out one of the cages, Vivian sprayed down the interior with disinfectant and completely rearranged it. The kittens they had just rescued from the movie theater needed to be placed inside to acclimate to their new environment. Once the veterinarians were free later, they would be taken out for their check-ups.
"Come here, sweethearts. Don’t be scared." Looking at the pitiful little things huddled in the carrier, Vivian let out a sly, almost witch-like chuckle as she picked up one of the pure white kittens.
The kitten’s tiny eyes were wide with fear. Dangling from Vivian’s grasp, it stayed completely motionless like a frozen baby chick. Vivian gently poked the kitten’s head. She desperately wanted to give it a kiss but managed to resist the urge, finally setting it down inside the cage.
The moment it touched down, the kitten instantly darted into a cardboard box. One by one, the rest of the kittens followed suit, acting exactly the same way.
The mother cat, however, had a bit more of a temper. The moment Vivian lifted her out, she frantically kicked all four legs like a spinning whirlwind, desperately trying to escape!
"Ah!" Vivian cried out, reaching out to catch the mother cat, but she slipped right through her fingers.
Fortunately, the mother cat’s sense of direction was rather poor. Instead of bolting toward the door, she scrambled directly toward Julian.
