Chapter 121: Chapter 121: Found a Healer

Vivian Lowell was standing right next to Caleb Quinn.

Hearing what the younger students said, she looked toward the rockery.

Sure enough.

Vivian saw a tiny kitten on top of the white clothing that was covering a large rock. The kitten was completely still, its condition unknown.

Vivian bit her lip.

Nights in Aethelburg were still a bit cold in March. A kitten abandoned outside by its mother like this might not survive.

And it was true that passersby shouldn’t just touch it casually.

A stray mother cat, upon discovering a different scent on her kitten, might no longer recognize it as her own.

She would choose to abandon it.

In more extreme cases, she might even eat it.

The animal kingdom could be that cruel sometimes. It wasn’t just cats; other animals would also choose to eat their own young if food was scarce.

When the female students first found the kitten had been pushed out, they had already used their clothes to cover their hands and put it back.

Doing so could minimally block their scent, but for some reason, the mother cat had still thrown the poor kitten out again.

They didn’t know what to do anymore. Perhaps they were afraid that if they put the kitten back the same way as before, the mother cat might just eat it.

"..."

After a long hesitation, Vivian decided she couldn’t let this stalemate continue.

They couldn’t guess the mother cat’s intentions, and they couldn’t afford to gamble.

"Caleb."

Vivian patted Caleb Quinn on the back and said, "Go get some hot water, goat milk powder that kittens can drink, and something to keep it warm."

"We need to prepare for the worst. We’re going to rescue this kitten ourselves."

Caleb’s eyes widened.

This was a newborn kitten! Without its mother’s care, it would be incredibly difficult for humans to raise!

Not to mention it would need to be fed every two or three hours at the beginning. They couldn’t replicate the antibodies in the mother’s milk. The mortality rate was very high.

"It’s okay."

Vivian could see Caleb’s worry, so she said, "There’s a mother cat at the pet hospital that was just rescued. Her own kittens are already over a month old, though."

"But... we can try and see if she’ll take this little one in. Anyway, let’s check on the kitten’s condition first."

Caleb agreed.

He turned back to look at the two female students.

The students had been watching Vivian with suspicious, seemingly distrustful eyes. When Caleb walked over, one of them asked, "Senior Caleb, who is she?"

"Can she really do what she says? How can you raise it without the mother cat? Finding another mother sounds nice, but what if that one doesn’t accept the kitten?"

’This student seems a little hostile toward me.’

Vivian could feel it in her gaze.

She didn’t have the extra energy to argue with the student. She just said coldly, "When it comes to experience rescuing kittens, I’ve been doing it for seven years, ever since I started as a freshman."

"Do you think you have more experience than me? Or do you have a better idea? If not, then shut up!"

Vivian was getting frustrated.

She couldn’t be bothered with it anymore. She walked directly over to the kitten, took a tissue from her bag to wipe the filth off its body, and then cupped it in her hands.

The moment Vivian held the kitten in her palm, a chill went through her heart.

It wasn’t just her heart that felt cold.

The kitten’s body was cold, too.

It seemed unresponsive.

Vivian closed her eyes. Unwilling to give up, she tried to perform CPR on the kitten.

"Vivian, this..."

Caleb moved closer. He had obviously seen the kitten’s lack of response and blamed himself. "This is all my fault. I’ve never encountered a situation like this, so I didn’t know what to do."

"If only I’d taken off my jacket to cover the kitten before I went to find you, maybe it would have stayed a little warmer?"

Vivian shook her head.

"Your jacket has your scent on it. Covering the kitten with it wouldn’t necessarily have been a good thing. Forget it, it’s okay."

"We’ll do our best and leave the rest to fate. When the hot water gets here, we’ll try soaking the kitten in it first. At least its body temperature can recover a bit, then we’ll do CPR again."

Caleb nodded.

Vivian crouched in the corner, holding the kitten, blowing hot air onto her own hands while continuing to press on the kitten’s chest.

She had no idea how long this went on. Her hands were growing stiff when the two female students finally returned.

"Senior Caleb, we brought back the hot water and the goat milk powder."

The students said earnestly.

Caleb took the items, poured out some of the hot water, and tested the temperature. He then said to Vivian, "Vivian, the water temperature is good. Not too hot."

"Okay."

Vivian nodded and placed the kitten into the hot water.

At the same time, she took the goat milk powder, mixed a small amount in a little syringe, and tried to see if the kitten could drink it.

There’s a specific way to feed a very small kitten.

Feeding it while it’s lying down can easily cause it to choke on the milk.

You have to hold the kitten upright; that’s better.

After soaking in the hot water for a moment, the kitten seemed to show a response. Vivian held it in her hand and tried to feed it the goat milk formula.

Perhaps it was the sweet smell of the goat milk, but as the aroma spread, the kitten actually reacted!

The kitten’s mouth moved!

"It’s alive! It’s alive!"

Caleb was overjoyed.

A smile touched Vivian’s lips as well, and she tried feeding the kitten some of the formula.

The kitten drank a tiny bit. Vivian continued to hold it, needing to resume CPR, prepare more hot water, and keep the kitten warm.

Nearby, Julian Faulkner saw that Vivian’s hands were becoming stiff, clearly frozen from the cold. He said gently, "Let me help you. I know how to do CPR too."

Vivian glanced at Julian, thought for a moment, and then nodded.

"Remember to be gentle. The kitten is still so small."

"Mm..."

Julian agreed and, mimicking Vivian’s movements, began to gently press on the kitten’s chest.

They had no idea how long this cycle repeated, but it continued until it was almost time for lights-out at Aethelburg University.

The two female students couldn’t wait any longer. They said to Caleb, "Senior Caleb, we have class tomorrow, so we have to head back now."

"Okay."

Caleb didn’t even turn his head, his attention fixed on the kitten as he gave a curt reply.

The two students seemed a bit reluctant and exchanged a look, but there was nothing to be done. With lights-out approaching, they had to leave.

Past eleven that night, Vivian returned to the pet hospital with the kitten, which had finally been revived.

She found the family of orange tabbies that Eleanor Rhodes had rescued earlier that day.

The mother was an orange tabby who had just had her first litter. She had three lively kittens of her own, all over a month old.

Vivian looked at the tiny white kitten in her hands, her heart still full of apprehension.

’Will the orange tabby accept it?’

Vivian first gave the mother cat a treat stick. The gentle cat rubbed against the back of Vivian’s hand, and Vivian relaxed a little, presenting the white kitten to her.

The orange tabby saw the kitten and didn’t seem to have much of a reaction. She licked its fur, then gently bit the scruff of its neck and carried it back to her nest.

The fluffy cat bed.

It looked so warm.

"Julian!"

Watching the orange tabby continuously lick the little white kitten, Vivian felt a sting in her nose. She couldn’t help but exclaim, "This mother cat is so loving!"

"Let’s go buy some meat tomorrow, okay? I want to make some raw food for her to replenish her nutrients! Nursing kittens is so hard, and she’s just so good!"

"Okay."

Seeing the white kitten accepted by the orange tabby and knowing it now had a nursing mother, Julian also felt a sense of relief. "Your hard work all night rescuing this kitten wasn’t in vain, was it?"

Vivian nodded.

Rescuing kittens was her passion.

She had stuck to it and succeeded, and she was very happy.
