Kicked Out, Flash-Married, and Now He Won't Let Me Go
Chapter 137: Remember Her WordsChapter 137: Chapter 137: Remember Her Words
Julian took the phone.
"Hello?"
He turned on the speaker. On the other end of the line, Rachel was noticeably taken aback, clearly not expecting Julian to be the one answering.
"Julian, it’s you."
Rachel’s tone was a bit strange before she continued, "I’ve rested up and I’m feeling much better now. How is Grandma doing? I want to come to the hospital to see her!"
"There’s no need."
Julian rejected her outright, leaving no room for negotiation. He said coolly, "I’ve hired bodyguards and caregivers to look after Grandma.
"She’s doing very well right now. After she’s discharged and back home in a few days, you can just start coming home earlier from work to keep her company."
A heavy silence fell over the other end of the line.
Vivian knew Julian was an assertive man. Since he had put it that way, Rachel definitely had no way out. However, facts proved that the Faulkners could never be judged with simple logic.
"Julian."
Rachel suddenly began to cry. With a tearful, deeply wronged tone, she sobbed, "I know you’re holding a grudge against me for what happened today.
"But it really was an accident. I’m your older sister, and I grew up by Grandma’s side just like you. Of course I’m worried sick when something happens to her. Julian...
"What exactly went wrong? Why have things between us siblings deteriorated to this point?
"I can feel it. Julian, you seem to be on guard against me. I..."
Rachel choked on her sobs, sounding utterly devastated.
Vivian was absolutely dumbfounded. If it weren’t for her past interactions with Rachel, which had taught her that the woman was far from simple, she probably would have been completely fooled by this performance.
Vivian glanced at Julian to gauge his reaction. Sure enough, Julian was just as distrustful of Rachel as she was.
"Rachel," Julian began, his voice so flat it sounded as if he were speaking to a complete stranger. "I will investigate what happened today.
"If I’ve misunderstood anything, I’ll apologize to you. But until then, you should just stay home or go to work at the office. I’ll handle things here with Grandma."
Julian didn’t yield an inch. He remained completely unmoved by Rachel’s tearful pleas.
Vivian felt a spark of immense satisfaction. How should she put it? Rachel was an excellent actress, and men were usually terrified of a woman’s tears and coaxing. Most of the time, they were helpless against it. Even if they were reluctant, they would likely cave and agree to the woman’s demands in a moment like this.
But Julian didn’t. This proved that he wasn’t someone who could be easily swayed. Excellent.
Vivian couldn’t help but shoot Julian a look of pure admiration.
Just then, Julian hung up the phone. As he turned to hand it back to Vivian, he inevitably caught her gaze. In an instant, his normally stoic and cold expression seemed to freeze entirely. He wondered why she was looking at him with the beaming, praising expression of a teacher watching a primary school student get a practice question right. Julian truly couldn’t understand it.
Sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere, Vivian quickly changed the subject. She glanced up at the sky and said, "The weather is so nice today!
"Julian, what kind of flowers do you think we should buy for Grandma?"
Julian sighed, fighting the urge to knock her on the head. He found her ability to change the subject incredibly clumsy and couldn’t help but point it out. "Didn’t we just discuss this exact topic a moment ago?
"You said you thought carnations were a great choice because they come in many colors and look lovely when arranged together. Then you said lilies were also quite nice since their strong fragrance could mask the smell of hospital disinfectant.
"You even added that you actually prefer roses, but because they are so rich and vibrant, they’re best suited as a symbol of love, making them less appropriate for Grandma."
Julian repeated everything she had just said almost word for word.
Vivian felt even more embarrassed. She awkwardly laughed it off and said, "Ah, is that so! Julian, I was just testing you to see if you actually remembered what I said!
"I didn’t expect you to remember it all! Grandma said you were amazing at memorizing texts back when you were in school, and she was absolutely right!"
Hearing this, Julian couldn’t help but purse his lips. He wondered when Grandma had ever told her such a thing. Was it another one of their secret, private conversations?
On the way back to the hospital after buying the flowers, Vivian held a large floral basket, taking a deep breath of the fragrant blooms. She was in excellent spirits. Remembering how she had disguised herself as a nurse to sneak into Annie’s ward, she gave Julian a brief rundown of what had happened.
"Is this woman crazy? Ten million. If you actually agreed to that, who knows how many people would show up at the Faulkner Group headquarters to scam us for a payout!" Vivian found the whole situation utterly ridiculous in hindsight.
Julian nodded in agreement. However, his focus was as wonderfully unconventional as ever. He asked, "The Faulkner Group headquarters?"
Vivian shot him a baffled look. She had said that because her own company was also located in the Faulkner Group building. Julian’s question was so odd; it was as if they weren’t even on the same wavelength! She quickly clarified her meaning.
Julian finally nodded. "It is a bit extreme. You just mentioned she said her husband had died a long time ago? Did she say how long ago?"
Vivian shook her head. That was exactly what she didn’t know! If she did, she could deduce whether the baby Annie lost today actually belonged to her late husband!
Although there wasn’t enough evidence to make a solid deduction, Vivian’s sixth sense told her that, in all likelihood, it wasn’t.
Julian nodded again. "Vance Wyatt is already investigating her past abroad. The Faulkner Group’s legal team will also be coming over this afternoon to negotiate with Lawyer Donovan.
"As long as we clear up Annie’s situation before things blow out of proportion, we’ll be fine."
Vivian felt the same way. The whole incident reeked of a conspiracy. Julian needed to get to the bottom of it quickly, or else the Faulkner Family’s reputation would suffer a massive blow! Moreover, Grandma Faulkner was getting on in years and couldn’t handle the stress.
Having reached an agreement, the two returned to the hospital. Vance was standing guard at the door and took the opportunity to brief Julian on the situation.
"Our company’s legal team has already negotiated with Ms. Adler’s side. She’s demanding ten million in compensation, which is impossible for us to agree to.
"Currently, there isn’t sufficient evidence to prove that Ms. Adler’s miscarriage has anything to do with the old madam. Their demands are both illegal and unreasonable.
"We still need to continue..."
Vance was cut off mid-sentence. Not far away, a man in a crisp suit—who looked every bit the part of a lawyer—was hurriedly marching toward them.
