Kill The Old Ones!

Chapter 226: City vs. City: Finals (IX)

--

Aria gritted her teeth in exertion.

The weight of Ren’s fist bore down on her completely. She could feel and almost hear her flesh and bones groaning in pain and strain as she endured the attack.

Her mind was also reeling. She couldn’t believe this. She knows that this man was strong but not to this extent. Sure, she had seen the video clip of him beating the crap out of Flood Dragon King and the being being afraid of him, but she never bought that. She thought the organizers were just exaggerating.

Now, though? She truly understood.

They weren’t exaggerating at all. If anything, that short video clip may have not shown everything that Ren could do.

’No, I can’t lose here! ’ she exclaimed inwardly.

With a growl, she adjusted the angle of her spear again, allowing her to borrow the sturdiness of the earth to endure the weight of Ren’s punch. Then, like a viper poised to strike, she stabbed him with her sword.

Aria saw it clearly in his eyes.

He had seen her stabbing him before she even made the attack. But instead of responding, he allowed her to do it.

When her sword made contact with his neck, her expected result didn’t happen. Her sword didn’t effortlessly pierce his throat.

Instead, she felt the same resistance as before. That immovable and nigh-invulnerable barrier that prevented any harm from actually landing on Ren.

It wasn’t limited to his arms alone. It protected his whole body. He didn’t need to raise his arms to defend. Hell, he didn’t even need to acknowledge it at all.

Even when Aria’s sword intent and purple lightning wreathed her sword, making it extremely sharp and deadly, it didn’t matter. Whatever this defensive martial art was, it’s enough to render her strength useless and inane.

And then, she felt it.

Ren pushed his fist forward, just a bit.

But to Aria, it felt much worse. It’s as if another meteor hit the one she was already holding off, and it made her suffer even more.

The ground beneath her cracked. Her arms were trembling in exertion and strain. There was no need to be a genius to tell that she couldn’t handle this any longer. She will be crushed if she doesn’t do anything.

So, as much as she hated to relent to a direct clash, she had no choice but to prioritize her safety. She changed the angle of her spear again, allowing Ren’s fist to slide from it. She then kicked her heels to create some distance between her and Ren.

Once again, she saw Ren recognizing what she was doing. Despite that, he allowed her to escape.

She paid attention just long enough for her to see Ren’s fist making contact with the ground. And when it did, the audience became aware of just what she was enduring.

Boom!!

The arena’s floor—one that’s made out of the toughest materials one could find in this world and some—emitted a dangerous sound when Ren’s fist landed on it.

Cracks spread through the entire surface. Yes, that’s right. Ren just damn near broke the surface area of this arena with a single punch—this was another addition to the ridiculous feats he had achieved under his belt.

Everybody went speechless for a bit; even Terry—the ever so clever and talkative host of this tournament—was rendered speechless by what he saw. After that, the whole stadium shook with cheers of excitement, awe, and terror of what Ren displayed.

Meanwhile, Ren straightened his back. He looked just as indifferent as before. It’s as if he didn’t do anything special at all.

On the other hand, Aria’s hold on her spear tightened along with her expression.

She held onto her spear tightly to suppress her trembling arms. Now, everybody understood just how heavy Ren’s punch was and how monstrous this man was.

On any normal day, she would’ve admired him. She’d be puzzled on how exactly he achieved this level of strength, but she would respect his hustle.

But this isn’t a normal day. This man wasn’t just some strong man; he was Sieg’s enemy, his bully. Aria couldn’t forgive him for doing that to her boyfriend.

That said, how was she supposed to defeat him? He’s too strong!

’I’ll try to be quick, then,’ she decided.

She realized something she thought important. Maybe the ’invulnerability’ of Ren was reactive. She knew that Ren was perceptive. Maybe if she moved and attacked so fast, way faster than he could react, she’d be able to catch him off-guard and deal actual damage to him.

Aria didn’t need to defeat him in a single strike. But if she could draw blood or leave a wound on him, then that would dispel the illusion that Ren was truly invincible.

With this in mind, Aria moved. She gathered momentum, turning into a streak of lightning that darted across the arena way too fast.

Eventually, she became so fast that nobody could trace where she even was anymore, or where her movement started and ended. It even felt like she was in two places at once.

As she moved, Aria’s attention was on Ren. She watched him like a hawk. She was watching out for any muscle tension or any clue if Ren becomes impatient enough to attack.

But Ren just stood there and waited, relaxed and completely unbothered. He wasn’t even trying to follow her movement. He was just standing there at ease.

Aria tested the waters. She attacked, but it was a feint, an afterimage.

Ren didn’t bite. He didn’t even look at her afterimage. He just crossed his arms and continued waiting.

Aria then started her onslaught. She stabbed his chest with her spear, but that was a clone, her real self was hovering behind Ren with her sword striking at the back of his head.

She attacked two places at once, and both attacks landed.

Sadly, they didn’t do anything. They encountered the same resistance as ever.

Aria doubled down, four attacks at once. When that didn’t work, Aria doubled it again.

This kept going on until not a single day passed that Aria didn’t test Ren’s invincibility.

And Ren just stood there and took it...for a while at least.

Everybody watched him stand there and take everything like a man. He was like a statue that’s completely invulnerable to harm. Aria seemed like a pest trying to do everything she can to bother him to no avail.

It was obvious that Aria’s tactic wasn’t working. She was just wasting her strength and chakra by doing this. Ren was immune to her shenanigans.

Inwardly, Aria realized it too, and she was shaken.

She didn’t want to accept it. She didn’t want to believe that he’s this strong and tough because if she did, then she’d be admitting that Sieg made an enemy that neither he nor she could handle, and she resolved herself to be the justice that would make the world a bit kinder to Sieg.

Admitting that Ren was invincible would also be admitting that she was too weak to earn justice for Sieg. And that would break her heart and the oath she made to herself.

Aria was shaken out of her stupor when her instincts screamed warnings to her.

Before she knew it, Ren was already moving, and the same phenomenon occurred again.

It’s as if time itself slowed down just enough to give Ren enough room to do what he needed to do.

Ren matched Aria’s speed perfectly, defending against her relentless volley of attacks as swiftly, elegantly, and skillfully as he could.

It was the utter mastery of it all that’s mind-boggling. Even for someone as talented as Aria, this was something she couldn’t do.

Then, Ren kicked up the notch.

He wasn’t satisfied with simply defending anymore. He pressed his advantage, not completely—because Aria would certainly be defeated in an instant if he did that—but gradually.

Slowly, but with a visible rhythm and tempo, Ren pressed on until it came to the point where it was Aria who had to endure Ren’s storm of attacks.

He switched their positions just like that. And she could tell that he was doing it on purpose.

What makes this worse is that Ren’s movement looked more than familiar to her. They were the same exact moves and rhythm she had been using—just minus the lightning and the weapons.

Ren learned her fighting style, and he wasn’t even watching closely. Now, he used it against her to switch their positions. He went from the defending party to the attacker, and Aria couldn’t do anything to stop it.

What sucks even more is that Ren was at ease when he was enduring her onslaught. Aria couldn’t replicate that. She had to strain her senses and instincts to defend against Ren because she’s not as invincible as he was—she couldn’t just stand in the middle of the arena and endure Ren’s onslaught like he did for hers.

They’re not the same, that much was clear.

This, along with the strain she had to endure earlier, made her weaker.

It didn’t take long before a solid punch landed on her stomach that forced the wind out of her lungs.

That was only when Ren’s assault finally stopped.
