In perfect unison, the lightning wolves attacked. From the surrounding jungle, bolts of crackling yellow energy erupted. They struck the ogre from all sides – its chest, back and limbs. The air filled with the sizzling hiss of electricity and the sharp ozone tang.
CRACK-ZAP!
The ogre roared, a sound of pain and fury. Its body convulsed when the lightning arced across its skin, charring the flesh and created the smell of burning hair and cooked meat.
It staggered, trying to stand but another coordinated volley struck. More lightning bolts slammed into its torso and legs. The beast fell to its knees, smoke rising from blackened skin, deep burns crisscrossing. Its roars turned into choked groans of agony.
The wolves held their positions, ready to fire again if needed. Two and Three watched from their vantage point, their expressions impassive but their eyes alert. The ogre was down, incapacitated but not dead.
That was the plan.
Minutes passed, then stretched longer. The fallen ogre groaned weakly in the clearing, surrounded by the vigilant wolves and the two tense goblins.
"Where are they?" Three hissed, shifting impatiently. "Shouldn't they have come out to check by now? Like the others?"
Two's expression was grim. "Something's wrong," he muttered. His instincts screamed a warning. "They should have heard the noise."
As the words left his mouth, a chorus of bestial roars erupted from the jungle from the opposite slope.
"BEHIND US!" Three shrieked in alarm.
Six massive ogres, wielding crude clubs and bellowing war cries, burst from the dense vegetation on the other side of the clearing. They charged down the slope, a tidal wave of muscle and rage. They slammed into the lightning wolf line from the rear.
The wolves, caught utterly by surprise, were thrown into chaos. Some were sent flying by heavy swings of clubs, yelping in pain. Others scattered, trying to regroup. The neat formation dissolved into pandemonium.
As if this wasn't enough, three more ogres exploded from the original cave entrance, completing the ambush. The wolves were trapped between two converging forces.
"It's an ambush!" Two shouted, his voice barely heard over the roars and snarls. "They used the cave as bait! RETREAT!"
He raised his signal horn and blew a sharp, urgent note, then scrambled for his wolf, Bram. Three was already leaping onto Sparky's back. The signal cut through the chaos, a desperate call to fall back.
"Bram, go!" Two yelled, kicking his heels into the wolf's flanks. Bram, understanding the urgency, let out a sharp howling and surged forward, dodging the flailing limbs of an ogre.
Three and Sparky were already darting between two charging brutes, the wolf's fur crackling with sparks when a club whistled past.
The other wolves followed the retreat signal, those uninjured breaking free of the fight and darting into the jungle after the leaders. Those caught by ogres snarled and bit, but were overwhelmed, their lightning unable to penetrate the thick hides at such close distance.
The goblins didn't look back, they sped through the undergrowth, branches whipping past them, the enraged roars of the pursuing monsters fading into the distance. The ambush had been devastatingly successful. They had underestimated the ogres and walked right into a trap.
The entourage burst from the tree line, the surviving members streaming behind like shadows. They raced across the uneven terrain, putting distance between themselves and the enemies behind.
"So… after many successful missions capturing them…" Two panted, his voice tight with effort and frustration, "…the last few grew vigilant. More cunning."
He glanced back over his shoulder at the pack following. "How is our number?"
"Lost four," Three reported grimly, scanning the wolves. "Down to sixteen. And Sparky took a hit to the flank, he's limping."
Two cursed under his breath. "We'll have to regro...!"
His words were cut off mid-sentence. A giant, dark shape erupted from the thick undergrowth to their right, barreling toward them at incredible speed. It slammed into Bram, crushing bone beneath the sheer impact. The wolf yelped and was thrown sideways, stumbling and falling. Two, unprepared for the impact, was ripped from Bram's back and sent flying. He crashed into a tree trunk, the impact producing a sickening thud.
"WHAT THE FUCK?!" Three roared, reining Sparky to a halt. He saw his comrade crumpled at the base of the tree, a boar's silhouette was already disappearing into the jungle, oblivious to the chaos it had caused.
The lightning wolves skidded to a stop, forming a circle around the goblins. Bram limped over, whining softly.
"What just happened?" Two gasped, struggling to push himself up. He coughed violently, spraying blood onto the damp earth. "Ugh… my chest…"
"A Brambletusk," Three said, quickly dismounting. He knelt, assessing the damage, Two's leather armor was badly torn over his ribs. Beneath the ripped material, a deep, ugly gash oozed red blood. His breath came in shallow, painful wheezes.
"Big one. Hit you square in the chest." Three's face paled. He pressed a hand to the wound, applying pressure but blood still seeped through his fingers. "Shit, shit, shit," he muttered. "We have to get you back to the dungeon. The wound is..."
"How bad is it?" Two asked weakly, his eyes losing focus, voice slurring slightly.
"Just bad," Three lied, his voice tight. "Shut up and save your strength. The wound is small." He looked around frantically. "We just need to staunch this!"
As Three quickly took out a bandage, the wolves' hackles rose, they began to snarl and growl.
"Look!" Bram barked softly.
They followed Bram's gaze and their blood ran cold.
From the dense foliage surrounding them, figures emerged. They hovered silently above the deepest shadows of the canopy before landing softly on the jungle floor, barely disturbing the leaf litter.
There were twenty of them.
Stylized wasp-woman warriors. They blended humanoid elegance with unmistakable insectoid traits.
Their hair was a cascade of black shot through with vibrant blonde streaks, pulled back loosely but with defiant strands framing sharp, expressive faces and luminous, multi-faceted eyes glowing. Delicate antennae twitched above their brows.
From their backs, unfolded large, translucent wings catching the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy. They shimmered with a glass-like iridescence, their thin veins visible, resembling the wings of giant, deadly wasps.
Extending from their lower torsos were large, segmented abdomens – glossy yellow striped with bold black bands. The abdomens were sleek, armored, and ending in a sharp stinger.
They wore intricate armor crafted from smooth, polished chitin-like plates in shades of burnished gold. Rounded pauldrons protected shoulders, while segmented guards covered hips, thighs, shins, and forearms.
The wolves snarled, hackles raised, but held their positions, awaiting orders. Three stared and frozen, his hand still pressed uselessly against the bleeding wound.
Two, his vision fading, managed to tilt his head slightly, his gaze meeting the towering wasp-woman warriors.
"Vespran…" he croaked, the name tasting like bile in his mouth. "Shit… run, Three… run…"
The tallest of the Vespran took a decisive step forward, her antennae twitching as she assessed the scene. Her gaze swept over the goblins and the wolves. Just when she opened her mouth to speak, the earth trembled. From the direction the goblins and wolves had fled, the jungle erupted.
After a chorus of furious roars, the ogres burst through the foliage. The six who had ambushed from the rear slope and the three from the front cave crashed into the clearing, clubs raised, their eyes wild, bloodlust burning in their gazes.
They skidded to a halt as they saw the assembled Vespran warriors blocking the path to the fleeing preys. Confusion and anger warred on their brutish faces.
Suddenly, the clearing became a tense, triangular standoff.
The Vespran formed a disciplined line between the goblins/wolves and the ogres. Their rapiers lowered, wings humming faintly, stingers poised.
Behind them, the shadow goblins and lightning wolves huddled together. Three knelt over Two, who was coughing up more blood, his breath becoming shallower. The other wolves formed a tight ring, clearly aware they were surrounded and outnumbered like the trapped prey in the middle.
Facing the Vespran line, the ogres bellowed incoherently, beating their chests and clubs against the ground. They were much stronger than the wasps, but the organized formation and the gleam of those spear-tips gave them pause. They shifted restlessly, snarling, caught between their pursuit of the goblins and the new, formidable barrier.
The tension was palpable. The air crackled with imminent violence. Every side assessed the others, calculating their chances.
Would the Vespran attack the ogres, or turn on the trapped prey?
Would the ogres charge the organized Vespran line, or try to circle around to get to the goblins?
Would the wolves and goblins make a break for it, or stand their ground?
Three's hands trembled as he held the useless bandage against Two's wound. The ogres roared, shaking the trees and the Vespran stood motionless, waiting.
The slightest move could trigger a bloodbath.
