The restaurant was tucked down a narrow alley, marked only by a simple painted sign depicting a rooster crowing atop a barrel. Inside, it was cozy, the air thick with the smells of roasting meats, fresh-baked bread, and woodsmoke from the massive hearth dominating one wall.

A server led them to a secluded corner table draped in a clean linen cloth.

With a courtly flourish Ysabel pulled back Caelith's chair. "Please."

"Thank you," Caelith murmured softly as she took her seat, smoothing her black dress over her thighs. Her cheeks were flushed a pretty pink.

Ysabel settled opposite her, the warmth of the hearth soothing after the cool walk.

"The menu here is excellent," Ysabel announced, picking up one of the thick, parchment menus propped against a salt cellar. "What catches your fancy, Caelith?"

Caelith's large eyes scanned the list, then she put the menu down and smiled shyly at Ysabel. "Actually… why don't you just order for both of us? Whatever you choose will be delicious, I'm sure."

A surge of pleasure warmed Ysabel. The unconditional trust implied in that simple request touched something deep within her. "Really?"

Caelith nodded firmly, her smile widening. "Of course. I trust your taste completely."

"Very well, then." Ysabel beamed, turning her attention back to the menu. "Two of the chef's roast boar shank with the honey and apple glaze, the sautéed greens with bacon, and the roasted root vegetables. And a pitcher of your dark ale."

The server bowed and whisked the menus away. Ysabel leaned forward, resting her arms on the table, her gaze fixed warmly on Caelith. "And perhaps… something sweet for after?"

As the food arrived, piled high and steaming, Ysabel deftly carved a thick slice of succulent boar meat, glazed a deep, sticky brown, and deposited it onto Caelith's plate.

"There you are. Dig in."

Caelith cut a small, dainty bite with her knife. Her eyes widened comically as she chewed. "Oh, heavens! That's amazing!" she mumbled around the food. "The glaze! It's sweet and spicy all at once! And the meat is so tender!"

Ysabel chuckled. "Told you. This place does a superb roast."

They ate heartily, conversation flowing freely. Ysabel regaled Caelith with a ridiculous anecdote about the time a new recruit accidentally locked himself inside a supply cupboard during an inspection, mistaking the knob for something… else.

"And when we finally got the door open," Ysabel choked out between bites and laughter, "there he was, white as a ghost, clutching onto the mop handle for dear life, swearing blind the cupboard had attacked him! Needless to say, we renamed the mop 'Sergeant Bristles'."

Caelith dissolved into giggles, covering her mouth with her napkin. "Oh no! That poor boy! How long was he in there?"

"About five minutes. But he swore it felt like hours," Ysabel replied, eyes twinkling with amusement.

"And 'Sergeant Bristles'? Was he punished for such an unbecoming attack on a soldier?" Caelith teased.

"Severely. He got reassigned to latrine duty," Ysabel said with mock seriousness. "Terrible fate. No more fancy dinners for him."

"Ah, a truly tragic end," Caelith sighed dramatically, before taking another bite of boar.

They laughed, a warm, comfortable sound that filled the space between them. The shared joke eased any lingering tension.

As the ale flowed and the plates emptied, Ysabel found herself recounting more stories - tales of patrols gone hilariously wrong, the antics of the cooks in the barracks mess, even a surprisingly amusing account of a run-in with a bandit whose pants had fallen down mid-surrender. Caelith listened intently, interjecting with her own gentle humor and wide-eyed wonder.

The connection between them strengthened with each shared laugh and easy smile. For a while, the shadows of Ysabel's past seemed very far away indeed.

The night wore on, punctuated by laughter and clinking mugs. The second pitcher of ale proved a mistake, judging by the increasingly slurred delivery of Caelith's own story about a cat getting stuck in the barracks roof.

By the time Ysabel settled their tab, both women were pleasantly unsteady on their feet, leaning into each other more than necessary for balance as they navigated the now-deserted streets back to the barracks.

In the privacy of Ysabel's small room, the air grew thick and warm. Ysabel leaned against the door frame, watching Caelith try – and fail to undo the intricate clasp of her own bracelet.

"Here," Ysabel murmured, her voice husky. She moved closer, her hands finding Caelith's wrists, lifting them. "Let me." Her deft fingers worked the clasp free, her touch lingering.

Caelith stood still, barely breathing, her dark eyes wide in the dim lamplight, fixed on Ysabel's face. The scent of ale mingled with a sweet floral perfume Ysabel hadn't noticed earlier.

Emboldened by drink and the soft invitation in those dark eyes, Ysabel gently released the bracelet onto the small table beside the bed. Slowly, she reached up and cupped Caelith's flushed cheek with one hand, her thumb lightly tracing the soft fullness of her bottom lip.

"Caelith," Ysabel whispered, her voice rough with desire she barely understood but couldn't deny. "May I kiss you?"

Time seemed to hang suspended. Then, ever so slowly, Caelith leaned in, closing the scant distance. Her answer was not a word, but a breathy sigh as her lips met Ysabel's, soft, warm, and yielding.

But as the afterglow settled, Ysabel held Caelith close, the scent of their passion thick in the air. Despite the intensity of the moment, Ysabel felt a familiar emptiness lurking beneath the physical pleasure.

The connection with Caelith was sweet and genuine, but the desperate, all-consuming fire that had raged that fateful night with that woman…

That was a sensation this gentle, exploratory encounter couldn't quite match. The memory, unwanted yet undeniable, clung like a ghost in the dark room.
