Chapter 39: Chapter 39: put her in danger
Some moments later, Amelia’s eyes fluttered open. The sterile white ceiling swam into focus, the harsh lights making her squint. Her head felt heavy, her thoughts sluggish.
Claire’s voice came from beside the table. "She’s finally awake."
Amelia pushed herself up on her elbows, still disoriented, her gaze darting between Claire and Skye. "What’s the result?"
Skye gave a small, unreadable smile, her green eyes betraying nothing. "You’ll know when you meet the brothers."
The words sent Amelia’s anxiety skyrocketing. She slid off the examination table, her legs unsteady beneath her, and followed them out of the medical bay, heart hammering against her ribs.
What did they find? Am I really possessed?
Every step toward the upper floors made the dread heavier, pressing down on her shoulders.
Claire walked in silence, her expression carefully neutral. She hadn’t told Skye everything she had discovered inside Amelia’s body. She only hoped the brothers wouldn’t decide to kill the girl the moment they heard the full truth.
When they reached the office, only Enzo was present. He stood behind the desk.
Claire inclined her head. "Master Enzo."
"Have you found a solution to her possession?"
Claire and Skye exchanged a brief glance. It was odd—he was asking for a solution rather than an elimination.
That’s so new.
"There’s no need," Claire answered. "It isn’t possession."
Enzo studied her for a long second, then reached for his phone and summoned his brothers. Thirty minutes later Reid and Dean entered the room, their presence filling the space.
Once the door was closed, Claire repeated everything she had told Skye—the suppressed past-life memories, the intentional preservation of those memories, the conclusion that Amelia’s former existence had been anything but ordinary.
None of the three men showed a flicker of outward surprise, no matter how much the information unsettled them.
Amelia, however, looked stunned. Past life? Memories that were never wiped? It sounds like something out of fiction. Something impossible.
Enzo trusted Claire enough to know she would not make up something this serious. "What’s the solution, then?"
Claire folded her hands. "I don’t know exactly who or what she was in those past lives. But I do know this: the abilities and powers she once carried almost certainly followed her into this life. If she can unlock them, it should allow her to fully align with the memories of her former selves."
Amelia’s voice came out thin. "I had no idea about any of this."
Claire shot her a flat look. "I know, dumb-dumb."
"Will putting her in dangerous situations help unlock those powers?"
"Absolutely," Claire replied without hesitation. "Or it will lead to her death."
Amelia’s stomach dropped. The blood drained from her face as the words sank in.
Reid let out a short, amused breath. "Well, that would be a shame, or a blessing in disguise."
Enzo ignored him completely, his eyes fixed on Claire. "There’s a perfect chance to try it out right now."
Claire opened her mouth, the refusal already forming on her tongue, then closed it again.
You don’t disagree with the Ellington brothers—not if you valued your position, or your life. And if she was honest, a quiet part of her was curious. She wanted to see what kind of powers this strange girl might actually be hiding.
Amelia’s hands twisted together. Words tumbled out in a panicked rush, tripping over each other. "W-wait—I don’t have any powers—I can’t—you can’t just—there has to be another way—I was only sleepwalking—"
Skye grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the door before she could finish. "Save the speech for later. Move."
The others followed.
*
They stood outside the main gates of the estate, the forest stretching dark and dense ahead of them. The trees loomed like silent sentinels, their branches interlocking to form a canopy that blocked out most of the fading light. Amelia turned desperately to Skye.
"Please. Talk to them. I don’t have powers. None. Zero. This is going to get me killed."
Skye didn’t even slow her steps. "Tell them yourself. What, you want them to make me to volunteer for this shitshow too? Not happening."
They pushed deeper along the forest path, the undergrowth crunching beneath their feet. Claire walked several paces behind with the three brothers, their voices low and muffled by the rustling leaves.
Dean asked "Do you think we also met her in those past lives?"
Claire glanced at him. "I can’t be certain. Why do you ask?"
Enzo’s grey eyes shifted to his youngest brother. "Does what happened between you and her that night have something to do with it?"
Dean gave a single, reluctant nod.The version of Amelia he had started privately calling that sleepwalking lunatic.
Claire considered the question carefully, her brow furrowing. "It’s possible. But I don’t know who the three of you could have been to her. Enemies. Strangers..." She paused, her voice dropping. "Or even lovers."
Reid let out a short, incredulous laugh, the sound sharp in the quiet forest. "That’s far-fetched. Absolutely far-fetched."
Before anyone could reply, a series of sharp, unnatural noises cut through the trees—the snap of twigs, the rustle of leaves. Every one of them stopped walking at the same moment, their bodies going rigid.
Enzo spoke up. "They’re here."
Amelia’s blood ran cold. Please let me just be hearing things. Please let this be my imagination.
Skye reacted first. She shoved Amelia hard to the side, her hands forceful. A massive boulder tore through the air and slammed into the exact spot where Amelia had been standing a split second earlier, shattering against the ground with a force that made the earth tremble.
Amelia hit the dirt, heart slamming against her ribs, dust and debris raining down around her. When she lifted her head, three masked women stood among the trees.
I would have been dead if Skye hadn’t pushed me.
The brothers were not fazed a bit.
Dean exhaled, sound of pure irritation. "I’m tired of dealing with these people."
Reid replied. "No need to worry. Amelia’s got this."
Then he raised his voice and began shouting like a deranged sports commentator, his arms spreading wide.
"That’s our girl! Go on, Amelia—Unleash your power! Make them regret ever being born! You’ve got this, you magnificent disaster!"
Amelia stared at him, equal parts terrified and furious. The look she shot him could have frozen fire. It did absolutely nothing.
Skye hauled her to her feet, brushed a leaf off her shoulder with exaggerated care, then gave her a firm shove forward. "Alright Amelia. Time to suddenly discover a deep well of motivation, unlock your mysterious past-life powers, and burst forth in glorious, preferably fatal, victory."
