Sonia’s POV
It started in the middle of the night with a slow, deep ache low in my back.
I thought it was the usual pressure from the pregnancy at first. I shifted carefully in bed, trying not to wake Ramon, his arm was heavy across my waist, his breathing steady against the back of my neck.
For a few minutes I simply waited, counting the quiet between the waves of discomfort.
Then the ache tightened hard enough to steal my breath.
I pressed my palm flat against the mattress and exhaled through my teeth. The pain rolled through me in a long, insistent pull that left my legs trembling when it finally eased. Sweat had already gathered along my hairline.
"Ramon."
My voice came out thinner than I expected.
He stirred at once. Alpha instincts never slept completely. "What is it?"
"I think... it’s starting."
He sat up so fast the blankets tangled around his legs. For one stunned second he just stared at me in the dark, hair sticking up on one side, eyes wide and unfocused.
"Starting as in... the baby?"
"Yes."
He made a sound that was not quite a word. Then he scrambled out of bed, nearly tripped over his own boots, and lunged for the door like the room was on fire.
"Don’t move," he ordered over his shoulder, already halfway into the corridor. "Do not move. I’ll get help. I’ll get everyone."
"Ramon, I am not going to—"
He was already gone.
I heard him shouting before he even reached the stairs.
"Lydia! Ivy! Someone get the healer! The baby is coming! Now!"
Within minutes the entire private wing sounded like it had been kicked awake. Doors slammed. Feet pounded. Someone dropped what sounded like an entire tray of metal bowls.
A young warrior skidded past the open doorway, took one look at me sitting on the edge of the bed, and immediately turned around and ran the other way muttering apologies.
Ivy arrived first, hair half-braided and eyes sharp with focus. Lydia came right behind her carrying clean cloths and a basin. The pack healer, an older woman named Marell, entered with the calm of someone who had done this a hundred times and refused to be impressed by chaos.
Ramon hovered in the doorway like a man who had forgotten how doors worked.
"She’s in pain," he announced, as if no one else could see that.
"I noticed," Marell said dryly. "Alpha, either come in and be useful or wait outside. You are blocking the air."
He stepped inside, then immediately stepped back again when another contraction hit me hard enough to make me grip the bedframe. The sound that left my throat was low and involuntary. Ramon’s face went pale.
"Is it supposed to look like that?" he asked.
Ivy shot him a look. "Yes. That is what labor looks like."
"She is too quiet. Why is she so quiet? Shouldn’t there be more... noise?"
"I am saving my noise," I managed between breaths, "for when it gets worse."
It got worse.
The contractions stopped giving long rests. They stacked on top of each other until the only thing I could do was breathe through them while Lydia wiped my face and Ivy counted steadily beside me. The room grew hot. My nightgown clung to my back. Every time the pain peaked, I felt my wolf rise close to the surface, not to fight, but to endure.
Ramon tried to help.
He brought water, then spilled half of it. He rearranged pillows, then decided the first arrangement had been better. At one point he knelt in front of me, took both my hands, and looked so genuinely terrified that a short, breathless laugh escaped me in the middle of a contraction.
"Why are you laughing?" he demanded.
"Because you look like you are the one giving birth."
"I would if I could."
"I know." I squeezed his fingers hard as the next wave built. "But you can’t. So stop looking like you might faint."
"I am not going to faint."
Marell glanced at him. "Sit down before you prove yourself wrong, Alpha."
He sat.
Barely.
Hours blurred. The castle beyond our doors stayed restless. I could hear people moving in the halls, low voices, the occasional sharp order. Word had clearly spread.
At one point Daisy’s voice carried from somewhere outside, telling someone to stop pacing a hole into the floor. Wolf’s deeper tone answered something gruff and impatient. Even through the pain, it struck me as strangely comforting that the whole pack seemed to be holding its breath with us.
When the pressure shifted lower and the need to push became impossible to ignore, Marell’s voice cut cleanly through the noise in my head.
"Now, Luna. With the next one. Push."
I did.
It felt like my body was turning itself inside out. Ramon held my hand so tightly I thought the bones might bruise, but I did not let go. Ivy stayed at my other side, steady and quiet. Lydia kept the cloths ready without needing to be told.
The pain peaked higher than anything I had ever felt.
I heard myself cry out, raw and open. Ramon’s forehead pressed against my temple.
"I am here," he kept saying. "I am right here. You are doing it. You are doing it."
Another push.
Then another.
Then a sudden, shocking release and a thin, furious cry that filled the entire room.
For one suspended second no one moved.
Then Marell’s practical voice returned.
"A boy. Strong lungs."
I collapsed back against the pillows, shaking, tears already sliding into my hair. Ramon made a broken sound that was half laugh and half sob. When Marell placed the small, blood-smeared, loudly protesting infant against my chest, everything else in the world narrowed to the weight of him and the heat of his skin.
He was real.
Our son.
Ramon leaned over us, hands hovering as if he were afraid to touch something so small. When he finally brushed one careful finger along the baby’s dark hair, his eyes were wet.
"He is perfect," he whispered.
I could only nod, too full to speak.
Outside the door, someone must have heard the cry. A cheer rose somewhere down the corridor, rough and joyful, followed by more voices joining in. The castle that had panicked for hours now sounded like it was remembering how to celebrate.
I held our son closer and felt his tiny fist curl against my skin.
The nightmare was over.
This—this loud, messy, living beginning—was ours.
