When Destiny opened her eyes, soft morning sunlight was already spilling through the tall windows.
For several quiet seconds, she lay completely still, trying to place her unfamiliar surroundings. The bed beneath her felt far softer than any she had slept in before, its sheets wrapping her in a soothing warmth. Outside, the estate was slowly coming alive. She could hear faint footsteps in the corridors, distant voices, and the occasional sound of someone moving about below.
It was only when she felt a weight across her waist that she turned her head.
Dane was fast asleep beside her.
His dark hair was disheveled, and his expression was relaxed in a way she rarely saw. Without the heavy seriousness he usually carried around the pack, he looked younger. His arm had fallen naturally across the space she had occupied during the night, his hand resting loosely against the sheets.
Destiny studied his face for a long moment before reaching up to gently touch the fresh mark on her neck.
She was married.
The thought still felt strange.
She had gone to bed simply as Destiny, but she had awakened as Dane’s wife. Somehow, a single night had changed the way the entire pack would see her.
"Why are you staring at me?" Dane asked softly.
His eyes opened as he shifted beside her.
Destiny’s hand dropped from her neck. "I was just trying to decide whether you look better asleep."
He frowned sleepily. "And?"
"I haven’t decided yet."
Dane gave a quiet laugh before pulling her closer against his chest.
"Good morning, wife."
A sudden flush of warmth rose to Destiny’s face.
"Good morning, husband," she whispered.
Dane closed his eyes again.
Destiny stared at him for a few seconds before laughing under her breath. "Are you really going back to sleep?"
"I was strongly considering it."
"Except you have a pack meeting today," she reminded him.
"I know."
"And the council is fully expecting you."
"I know."
"Plus, you promised to introduce me."
Dane opened one eye and looked at her.
"Do you remember everything I say?"
"Unfortunately for you, yes."
He released a dramatic sigh and finally let go of her. "Being married is already exhausting."
Destiny laughed as she climbed out of bed.
By the time they had dressed and walked down into the main hall, it became immediately obvious that news of their marriage had already swept through the estate.
The servants they passed looked at Destiny with an entirely new air of reverence. Some offered warm smiles, while others bowed respectfully. A few tried and failed to hide their excitement whenever they caught sight of her walking beside Dane.
Destiny did her best to return each greeting, even though she was still unsure how to react whenever someone addressed her as Luna.
In fact, the very first time she heard the title, she stopped dead in her tracks.
"Luna."
A young servant stood several feet away, balancing a heavy tray in her hands.
Destiny instinctively glanced behind herself.
No one was there.
She looked back at the girl.
The servant was staring directly at her.
Destiny pointed at herself. "Me?"
The girl’s nervous smile widened slightly before she nodded.
"Breakfast."
Destiny quickly accepted the tray. "Oh. Thank you."
The girl gave a quick, dutiful bow before hurrying away.
Destiny watched her retreat until Dane stopped beside her.
"You’ll get used to it," he reassured her gently.
"I really don’t think I will."
"Trust me, you will."
Destiny looked down at the tray in her hands. "It sounds strange."
"What does?"
"Luna."
Dane’s mouth twitched with amusement. "You’d prefer they call you Destiny?"
"I think I would."
"They’re not going to."
She gave him a look.
He simply smiled and continued walking.
Destiny followed, carrying the tray until one of the servants noticed and immediately hurried over to take it from her.
"Thank you," she said.
The servant bowed before leaving.
Destiny lowered her voice. "Everyone keeps doing that."
"Dropping everything to serve you?"
"Bowing."
Dane glanced at her. "You’re their Luna now."
"I know."
"Then let them show you respect."
Destiny sighed but said nothing.
As they continued toward the council chamber, Dane glanced down at her.
"You know, you don’t actually have to come inside."
Destiny met his gaze firmly. "I’m your wife."
"I know."
"Then I’m coming with you."
Dane offered a small, approving nod. "All right, then."
When the heavy doors opened, the bustling conversations inside instantly died down.
Every council member turned toward Destiny as she walked in side by side with Dane.
Although she felt the sudden weight of their attention immediately, she kept her posture steady. She refused to fidget or look away. If this was going to be her new life, she would have to learn how to stand in rooms like this without allowing everyone else’s expectations to unsettle her.
They reached the front of the grand room.
Dane took Destiny’s hand into his own.
"Yesterday, I made a decision," he announced clearly. "I chose Destiny. She is my wife, and in two days, she will stand before this entire pack as its Luna."
For a tense moment, absolute silence fell over the hall.
Then an older councilman slowly stood.
He bowed his head deeply toward Destiny.
"Luna."
Another council member rose.
Then another.
Within moments, every person in the room was standing in respect.
Destiny glanced at Dane. His hand remained securely wrapped around hers, steady and reassuring.
She turned back toward the council.
"Thank you," she said quietly.
The council members gradually returned to their seats.
Although the meeting continued for another hour, the time blurred together for Destiny.
The room filled with endless questions regarding the upcoming celebration, lodging arrangements for visiting families, the traditional ceremonies that needed to be observed, and the formal announcement that would have to be dispatched throughout the territory.
Dane answered every question without hesitation.
Destiny listened carefully.
At first, she had expected the meeting to be mostly about the ceremony itself. Instead, she slowly realized how many responsibilities were already being placed before her.
Her marriage to Dane had altered far more than the way he spoke to her.
People were already structuring their plans around her presence.
They expected her to stand beside him.
They expected her to participate in the traditions.
They expected her to become someone they could look toward for leadership.
The realization left her both nervous and strangely determined.
When the session finally adjourned, Dane walked her back down the corridor toward his room.
For a while, neither of them spoke.
Then he looked at her.
"How are you feeling?"
Destiny answered honestly. "Overwhelmed."
He nodded in understanding. "That’s entirely reasonable."
"I didn’t realize there would be so much to learn."
"There is."
She looked at him. "That was not reassuring."
A small smile appeared on his face. "You asked me how I thought you were feeling. You didn’t ask me to make you feel better."
Destiny laughed softly.
"I fully expected you to tell me I’d get used to it again," she teased.
"Oh, you definitely will."
She shook her head fondly. "You are remarkably unhelpful."
"I’ve been told that once or twice before."
"Only once or twice?"
"Perhaps more."
She laughed out loud, and Dane shared a warm smile as they continued down the quiet hallway.
For the first time since the wedding, Destiny allowed herself to truly think about the grand celebration waiting ahead.
She was nervous.
There was no denying that.
But beneath the nervousness was something else.
She was looking forward to it.
She was looking forward to standing beside Dane in front of the entire pack. She was looking forward to finally understanding what it meant to be his wife, not just in private but in the eyes of everyone who followed him.
And perhaps, with time, she would even stop turning around whenever someone called her Luna.
