Aria felt something cold settle in her chest. It was true. All of it. The greed, the fear, the desperate need to reclaim what she’d lost. She’d been trying to hide it, but the Shiny had seen right through her.

"You know nothing about me," she said, her voice carrying more bravado than she felt.

"I know everything about you. I can feel it. The hunger, the desperation, the way you clutch at treasure like it might save you." The Shiny laughed, a sound like breaking glass. "It won’t. Nothing will save you. Not here. Not from me."

---

Kelly stepped forward, his voice steady despite the fear in his eyes. "You’re not going to kill us."

"Oh? And why is that?"

"Because you’re playing with us. You want to enjoy this. You want to savor it. If you wanted us dead, we’d already be dead."

The Shiny’s smile faltered, just for a moment. "Clever little scout. You’re right, of course. I do want to savor this. It’s been so long since I’ve had proper prey. So long since I’ve felt the delicious taste of genuine fear."

It rose from its throne, its form shifting and flowing like liquid shadow. It moved toward them, slow and deliberate, savoring every moment.

"But that doesn’t mean I won’t kill you. It just means I’ll take my time."

---

Bunny stepped forward, her cheerful demeanor replaced by something harder, sharper. "You’re making a mistake."

"Am I?"

"Yes. You think we’re weak. You think we’re easy prey. But you don’t know us. You don’t know what we’ve survived."

The Shiny laughed again. "Oh, I know exactly what you’ve survived. I can taste it. The fear, the pain, the desperate hope. It’s all delicious."

It reached out, its fingers brushing against Bunny’s cheek. She flinched, but didn’t step back.

"Brave little bunny," the Shiny murmured. "So brave. But bravery is just fear with a mask on. And I can see right through the mask."

---

Kelly moved, placing himself between the Shiny and Bunny. "If you’re going to kill someone, kill me."

"How noble," the Shiny said, its voice dripping with mock admiration. "The weak scout, sacrificing himself for his friends. It’s almost touching."

"I’m not sacrificing myself. I’m buying time. There’s a difference."

"Is there?"

"Yes. Sacrifice implies loss. Buying time implies strategy. I’m being strategic."

The Shiny tilted its head, a flicker of genuine curiosity crossing its face. "You’re not afraid of me?"

"I’m terrified. But I’m also smart. And I know that you’re not going to kill me. Not yet. You want to play first."

"Clever, clever scout. You’re absolutely right."

It stepped back, its form shifting back to the tattered woman. It smiled, and the smile was warm, inviting, utterly terrifying.

"Very well. Let’s play a game."

---

"What kind of game?" Aria asked, her voice carrying a note of suspicion.

"The kind where you have a chance to survive. A small chance, but a chance nonetheless." The Shiny gestured, and the chamber shifted, the walls melting away to reveal a maze of corridors and chambers. "This is my domain. My playground. You have one hour to reach the exit. If you make it, you’re free. If you don’t..."

It smiled, and the smile was cold and hungry.

"Well. You can imagine the rest."

"And you’re just going to let us go?" Kelme asked, his voice carrying a note of disbelief.

"Oh, no. I’m going to hunt you. That’s the fun part. You’re going to run, and I’m going to chase. And if I catch you—" It laughed, a high, thin sound. "Well. You’ll find out."

---

They ran.

The maze was a nightmare of twisting corridors, dead ends, and traps that seemed to materialize out of nowhere. The Shiny’s laughter echoed around them, a constant reminder of what was hunting them.

"Left!" Kelly shouted, leading them down a narrow corridor.

"How do you know?" Aria asked, breathless.

"I don’t! But I have to choose something!"

They rounded a corner, and a wall of spikes shot up in front of them, blocking their path.

"Wrong way!" Bunny shouted.

"I know!"

"Then why did you go this way?!"

"I didn’t know it was wrong until now!"

---

The Shiny appeared at the end of the corridor, its form flowing out of the shadows like smoke. It smiled, and its teeth were too sharp, too many.

"Found you," it said.

Aria blasted it with light, but the Shiny didn’t flinch. It just laughed, the sound echoing off the walls.

"Light magic. How adorable. But I’m not a vampire, little girl. Light doesn’t hurt me. It just makes me hungry."

It lunged, and they scattered, running in different directions.

"Split up!" Kelly shouted. "We’ll meet at the exit!"

"That’s a terrible plan!" Aria shouted back.

"It’s the only plan we have!"

---

Aria found herself alone in a narrow corridor, her heart pounding in her chest. The Shiny’s laughter echoed around her, seeming to come from everywhere at once.

"You can’t hide from me," the Shiny whispered, its voice close, intimate. "I can feel you. The fear, the greed, the desperate hope. It’s delicious."

"Shut up!" Aria shouted, blasting the nearest wall with light.

The wall crumbled, revealing another corridor, and Aria ran. She didn’t know where she was going. She didn’t care. She just needed to keep moving, keep running, keep surviving.

"Run, little girl," the Shiny’s voice whispered. "Run as fast as you can. It only makes the hunt more enjoyable."

---

Kelly found the exit first.

It was a massive stone door, covered in runes and symbols, with a single keyhole in its center. He reached into his pocket, pulling out the golden key—

And the Shiny appeared behind him.

"Did you really think it would be that easy?" it asked, its voice warm and amused. "Did you really think I’d let you just walk out?"

Kelly turned, his face pale but determined. "No. But I had to try."

"Brave. Foolish. Brave and foolish. It’s a good combination."

It reached out, its fingers brushing against his cheek. "Don’t worry. I’ll make it quick. Painless. You won’t even feel it."

"Yes, I will," Kelly said, his voice shaking. "And I’ll feel it for a long time. Because you’re not going to kill me. You’re going to play with me. And then you’re going to kill me. And I’m going to feel every single second of it."

The Shiny tilted its head, a genuine flicker of surprise crossing its face. "You know me so well."

"I’ve been doing this for twenty years. I’ve seen a lot of monsters. I know how they think."

"Then you know there’s no way out."

"I know. But I also know that my friends are still out there. And they’re going to find a way to beat you."

The Shiny laughed, a long, delighted sound. "Oh, I hope so. I really, really hope so."

---

Aria found them.

She burst into the chamber, her light magic blazing, and saw Kelly pinned against the wall, the Shiny’s hand around his throat.

"Let him go!" she shouted.

The Shiny turned, its smile widening. "Or what? You’ll blast me with your little light magic? Go ahead. Try."

Aria raised her hand, light gathering in her palm—

And then she stopped.

Because the Shiny was right. Light magic wouldn’t work on it. She’d already proven that. She needed something else. Something smarter. Something the Shiny wouldn’t expect.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out the key. The one that opened the lair’s entrance. The one that had led them here.

"You want this?" she asked, holding it up. "This is what you wanted, right? This is what you were after all along?"

The Shiny’s eyes narrowed. "What are you doing?"

"I’m making a trade. My life for Kelly’s. You let him go, and I’ll give you the key."

"That’s not how this works. You can’t bargain with a monster."

"Then it’s not a bargain. It’s a gift. A gift from me to you. Take it, and let him go."

The Shiny hesitated. It could sense something wrong, something off, but it couldn’t quite figure out what.

"Fine," it said finally, releasing Kelly. "Give me the key."

Aria threw it. The Shiny caught it, and as it did, Aria blasted the wall behind it.

The wall collapsed, revealing the exit. And Aria grabbed Kelly and ran.

---

They burst through the exit, into the open air, and collapsed on the grass, gasping for breath.

"I can’t believe that worked," Kelly said.

"I can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner," Aria said. "The key was the only thing it wanted for some reason. It needed it to open the lair. Once it had it, it didn’t care about us anymore."

"You’re a genius. but I don’t think she wanted the key, she was messing with you. she didn’t think you can blast the door though."

"I know. I’m amazing. also that make way more sens."

---

They found Bunny and Kelme waiting for them at the entrance to the tomb, their faces pale with worry.

"You’re alive!" Bunny shouted, rushing forward.

"Barely," Kelly said. "But alive."

"What happened in there?"

"I’ll explain later," Aria said. "Right now, I just want to go home."

---

They walked away from the tomb, the laughter of the Shiny echoing behind them. They didn’t look back.

"Remind me never to do that again," Kelme said.

"Deal," Aria said. "But only if you promise not to lose your aura so quickly next time."

"That wasn’t my fault. Kelly scared me."

"Kelly scared you?"

"He said my charm wouldn’t work on the Shiny. That’s scary."

"Your charm wouldn’t work on the Shiny."

"That’s what I’m saying! It’s scary!"

Aria sighed, shaking her head. "You’re impossible."

"You’re the one who hit me with a rock."

"You deserved it."

"I didn’t deserve it."

"You definitely deserved it."

"Did not."

"Did too."
