Knowledge Is Power: The Last Reader
Chapter 55: The Mountain That Waited (Part II)The first mistake most warriors made when facing something larger than themselves was assuming size meant simplicity.
Milo had learned long ago that the opposite was often true.
The larger the system, the more points of failure it contained.
A castle had more walls than a house.
A kingdom had more borders than a village.
And a creature that had built its entire existence around overwhelming opponents with raw force had, inevitably, invested less into everything else.
The problem was finding where those compromises existed.
The three ink-forged knights finished climbing from the stone.
They stood shoulder to shoulder, their armored bodies shifting between pages and hardened black material, each one carrying a massive blade formed from compressed knowledge rather than steel.
They weren’t the strongest versions he could create.
Not even close.
But strength wasn’t their purpose.
They were variables.
The giant looked down at them.
For the first time since Milo entered the cavern...
It looked mildly interested.
"Summons?"
"No."
Milo wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.
"Experiments."
The creature’s expression twisted.
Then it raised its weapon.
"Then let us see what you learn."
---
The first golem moved.
Not forward.
Sideways.
The giant’s eyes followed it.
A mistake.
Milo noticed immediately.
The creature’s vision was excellent.
But its attention was narrow.
It focused on threats that demanded respect.
That meant anything it considered insignificant was ignored.
Useful.
The second golem approached from the opposite direction.
The third remained still.
Waiting.
The giant brought its weapon down.
The cavern screamed.
The first golem raised its shield.
For less than a second, the two forces met.
Then the shield disappeared.
Not broke.
Disappeared.
The construct was crushed so completely that even the ink holding it together scattered across the floor like spilled oil.
The giant continued the motion.
Too much force.
Too much commitment.
The weapon buried itself into the stone beneath it.
A normal fighter would have seen that moment and thought:
Attack.
Milo thought:
Recovery time.
The difference mattered.
"[Appraisal.]"
The invisible information returned.
Not numbers.
Not yet.
But patterns.
The boss’s muscles tensed before movement.
Its shoulders rotated before strikes.
Its attacks weren’t slow.
They were predictable.
The creature had spent centuries fighting opponents who were forced to react.
It had never needed to fight someone who studied.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
"[Magic Missile.]"
Six small bolts appeared around Milo.
The giant looked at them.
Almost disappointed.
"That?"
The missiles fired.
Not toward its chest.
Not toward its head.
Toward the damaged stone beneath its feet.
The impact was almost meaningless.
A few cracks.
A little dust.
The giant looked down.
Confused.
Then Milo moved.
"[Levitation.]"
His body rose instantly.
Not upward.
Forward.
He used the spell to remove his own weight rather than move like a flying target, allowing him to accelerate in a direction his injured body couldn’t physically manage.
The giant swung.
Too late.
Milo passed underneath the weapon.
The blade in his hand struck the back of the creature’s knee.
A shallow cut.
Barely noticeable.
The giant turned.
Milo was already gone.
The second golem attacked.
The giant destroyed it.
Again.
Exactly as expected.
But this time...
Milo watched the weapon.
Not the impact.
The movement.
The follow-through.
The recovery.
Every swing created a brief window where the creature had to reset its stance.
A fraction of a second.
Too short for normal fighters.
Long enough for him.
---
The cavern became a battlefield of mistakes.
Not his.
The giant’s.
Every attack was devastating.
Every attack was also a commitment.
The creature didn’t understand why Milo kept surviving.
It wasn’t because Milo was stronger.
He wasn’t.
The difference between them was absurd.
The giant could probably kill him with a casual movement.
But every time it tried...
Milo learned something.
And every time Milo learned something...
The giant became slightly easier to predict.
The creature eventually noticed.
"You are strange."
Milo ducked beneath another swing.
"Thank you."
"That was not praise."
"I accepted it anyway."
The giant slammed its fist into the ground.
The shockwave threw Milo backward.
He twisted in midair.
"[Telekinesis.]"
Broken weapons scattered across the battlefield lifted.
Hundreds of forgotten blades.
Remnants of the warriors who had come before him.
The giant looked up.
For the first time...
Concern appeared.
Not fear.
But recognition.
Milo smiled.
"Knowledge accumulates."
The swords moved.
"Even when the people who gathered it are gone."
The blades shot forward.
Not randomly.
Not wildly.
Every weapon targeted the same places.
The weak points.
The old scars.
The damaged joints.
The places where previous battles had already proven the creature was vulnerable.
The giant roared.
Several swords shattered against its hide.
Several more pierced.
Not deeply.
But enough.
Enough to prove something.
The mountain could bleed.
---
The creature stopped holding back.
The change was immediate.
The air itself became heavier.
Its muscles tightened.
The casual amusement vanished.
"You have mistaken patience for weakness."
The giant grabbed the broken weapon with both hands.
Then swung.
Milo barely reacted in time.
"[Mana Shield.]"
The shield formed.
The impact came.
The barrier lasted less than an instant.
But that instant saved his life.
The force still sent him crashing across the cavern.
His shoulder hit stone.
Pain exploded.
His fingers went numb.
The sword almost slipped away.
Almost.
The giant approached.
Slowly.
Not because it was slow.
Because it no longer considered him a threat.
A mistake.
Milo forced himself upright.
His vision blurred.
His ribs were worse.
His mana was dangerously low.
The logical conclusion was simple.
He couldn’t win.
The giant was too strong.
Too durable.
Too experienced.
Every conventional method ended the same way.
A weaker person would have accepted that.
A normal person would have searched for escape.
Milo looked at the creature.
Then at the cavern.
Then at the remains of the warriors who had died here.
And he understood.
The problem wasn’t that he couldn’t defeat the giant.
The problem was that he was trying to defeat it like everyone else had.
With force.
With courage.
With a bigger weapon.
With a stronger body.
Those men had all lost because they entered the fight the same way.
They saw a monster.
Milo saw a system.
And every system had a failure point.
---
The giant raised its weapon.
"This ends."
Milo looked down.
At his hand.
At his sword.
At the remaining mana inside his body.
Then he smiled.
"No."
The creature paused.
"Why?"
Milo lifted his eyes.
"Because I finally understand you."
The giant frowned.
"I am strength."
"No."
Milo stepped backward.
"You are a fortress."
The giant’s grip tightened.
"And fortresses..."
Milo’s hand touched the ground.
"...have foundations."
The last golem moved.
Not toward the giant.
Toward the cavern wall.
The creature noticed too late.
The golem slammed both hands into the ancient stone.
The entire chamber shook.
The giant looked upward.
For the first time...
Real alarm crossed its face.
Milo had never been trying to damage it.
He had been studying the battlefield.
The cavern.
The structure.
The weight.
Everything had been built around supporting the giant’s existence.
So he didn’t need to break the giant.
He only needed to remove what was holding it up.
The ceiling cracked.
The giant roared and moved.
But Milo was already there.
"[Telekinesis.]"
The broken weapons rose again.
Not toward the monster.
Toward its feet.
The giant’s balance shifted.
Only slightly.
A normal person wouldn’t notice.
Milo did.
A mountain didn’t need to fall far.
It only needed to fall once.
The ceiling collapsed.
Stone descended.
The giant raised its weapon.
Blocked.
Protected.
Survived.
Exactly as expected.
Milo waited.
One second.
Two.
Three.
The creature pushed the rubble away.
It was still alive.
Still standing.
Still terrifying.
But now...
One knee was damaged.
Its breathing was heavier.
Its movement slower.
And the most important thing:
It was angry.
Anger created patterns.
Patterns could be exploited.
Milo rushed forward.
The giant swung.
He dodged.
Not because he was faster.
Because he already knew where the attack would be.
The blade passed above him.
Milo jumped.
"[Levitation.]"
His body rose along the weapon’s own momentum.
He stepped onto the massive arm.
Ran.
The giant tried to grab him.
Too slow.
Milo reached the face.
The same place every creature protected.
The same place every warrior aimed.
The place the giant had never expected someone to reach.
Because everyone before him had tried to fight the mountain.
Milo had climbed it.
The creature’s eye widened.
Not fear.
Surprise.
A tiny moment of realization.
The little thing had never been trying to overpower him.
It had been solving him.
Milo raised his sword.
The final calculation completed.
"[Assassination.]"
The skill activated.
Every ounce of precision.
Every lesson.
Every weakness.
Every opening.
Compressed into one strike.
The giant moved.
Milo moved first.
The blade entered.
The world went silent.
For one moment...
The ancient monster and the tiny human stared at each other.
Then the giant whispered:
"...Clever."
Milo pushed the sword deeper.
"Thank you."
The creature’s eye slowly closed.
The mountain finally fell.
---
The impact shook the entire dungeon.
Dust filled the air.
Stone rained from above.
For several seconds Milo remained standing.
Not because he was unharmed.
Because he hadn’t yet remembered how tired he was.
Then his legs gave out.
He landed beside the fallen giant, staring at the ceiling.
Everything hurt.
Everything.
He laughed.
Quietly.
Weakly.
A completely exhausted, completely ridiculous laugh.
"I hate..."
He coughed.
"...that this keeps working."
The cavern answered with silence.
Then...
A pale blue window appeared.
Not a normal notification.
Something different.
Something heavier.
Something that made even Milo stop smiling.
> [WORLD BOSS DEFEATED]
[CLEAR TYPE: SOLO]
[ASSESSMENT: UNPRECEDENTED]
[CALCULATING CONTRIBUTION...]
[CALCULATING PERFORMANCE...]
[CALCULATING ABNORMAL CONDITIONS...]
[REWARD GENERATION IN PROGRESS]
Milo stared.
The final line flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then changed.
> [WARNING: PLAYER PERFORMANCE EXCEEDS STANDARD PARAMETERS]
[ADDITIONAL REWARD CATEGORY UNLOCKED]
For the first time since the battle began...
Milo forgot about his injuries.
Because whatever waited behind that screen...
Was not something ordinary adventurers received.
And judging by the way the window continued loading...
Neither was what came next.
[SPECIAL REWARD — IDENTIFYING QUALIFICATION...]
The words remained suspended in the darkness.
Waiting.
As if the dungeon itself was deciding what kind of person had just defeated the monster it had protected for centuries.
