After a few tosses and turns, Liam and Jessica found themselves standing on the ground, locked in what looked to be a stalemate.
Liam had his talons stabbed deeply in Jessica’s shoulders, using them to keep her still. He could tear a lot of her apart since the Primal Urge was still going, but chances were that wouldn’t kill her. Even as a zombie, she could probably resume the previous battle tactic and kill him for good.
Meanwhile, Jessica looked quite beaten. Blood had tainted her chin, spurted out of his mouth after the previous impact. She was blind in her left eye, half of her ear was gone, and even her shoulder wasn’t connected to her neck anymore.
There was also the rank 2 knife stabbed on Jessica’s left side. It hadn’t dug deep, but it was an additional injury worth considering.
The issue was that Liam was basically stuck now, while Jessica still had a lot of power to unleash.
An explosion of trembling winds blew from Jessica without needing any gesture, and Liam was powerless to oppose it. The Qi-Repulsion would get in the way of the Phantom Talons, and the rank 3 Deflecting Gale would send them both flying away.
The rank 2 knife stabbed in Jessica’s side shattered, exploding into a storm of splinters, before much of Liam’s flesh suffered from the same fate. A more widespread version of the attack that had almost killed Grace landed on him, and he just took it.
Eruptions of blood and gore unfolded all over Liam’s front. His torn robe just opened, revealing the sorry state of his torso. Bones became visible in some spots, but he didn’t budge.
In a way, Liam had also touched on the realm where he could be a walking zombie, albeit his was more of a combination of innate resilience and techniques’ boost.
Liam wasn’t alone. As soon as the attack ended, something unbelievably fast descended from the sky, aiming directly at Jessica’s head. The fan had come to his aid, but Jessica had been ready for it now.
Jessica let the fan get close before her head moved on its own, tilted by the very air the weapon was displacing. She became as weightless and graceful as a leaf hovering in the wind, the strange technique leading to an outcome Liam couldn’t really explain.
For some reason, the fan just missed, going slightly off-course. It cut behind Jessica’s head, descending alongside her back, before stabbing deeply into the ground.
The fan wasn’t the right weapon to destroy air once it was ready for it, but Liam knew what could. He had seen it with the greatsword, and he had already activated the technique.
A deep but short thudding noise resounded as soon as Liam’s foot touched the ground, resembling the beat from a huge drum. More blood spurted from his injuries due to the massive amount of wild energy that had built up inside his body, which he unleashed through a simple headbutt.
The impact blew away most of that destroyed surface, drowning it in wild tides of black winds. Everything dispersed rather quickly, revealing Jessica’s now mangled and caved-in face. Her skull seemed to have gone partially flat, but she was still alive and kicking.
Actually, Jessica had already moved to her next attack.
Liam was somewhat fine after using a single one of the Seven Hellish Steps. His vision was red due to all the blood covering his face, but nothing had broken, so he saw the death forming in his vision.
Jessica had waved her arms, forcing winds to spin and condense into a series of drill-like shapes that were already in front of Liam’s mangled torso and head. There were nine of those, piercing rather than sharp, and one thing became immediately clear.
If Liam didn’t defend, he would die. His stalemate had reached its limit.
A tide of black energy blew outward. The rank 3 Deflecting Gale clashed with the drill-like attacks while sending Liam flying away.
Liam stopped soon enough. The Deflecting Gale had little in terms of propulsion or offensive properties, the last part immediately becoming clear.
A warning rang in Liam’s mind, barely giving him the time to tilt his body sideways. He activated the Qi-Repulsion, but he remained one step too late.
More drill-like bullets had formed and had already reached Liam. The trembling membrane of black Qi dispersed some of their power, but they eventually pierced him.
Liam’s right shoulder, right thigh, waist, and left shin gained holes, and they were deep this time. He fell to one knee, struggling but failing to return to his feet, and that wasn’t the end.
Jessica had reappeared, her left shoulder now fully gone, alongside the stump. The right side of her torso had five long cuts, but she was on her feet, her face smashed but still full of strength.
Liam was out of tricks and one step behind once again. Jessica could very well launch another attack before he could summon anything, only for her to half-turn to dodge the fan shooting from behind her.
That bought Liam an additional second, which he decided to use in the only way he could. Another Qi-Storage Pill was already in his mouth as he planted his left foot on the ground, ready to throw himself at Jessica.
Even without anything else left, Liam still had his physical strength. At the very least, he could try to rip Jessica apart before his body stopped working. His Qi might even help there.
However, before Liam could see that reckless strategy through, a frown afflicted the mangled face. Her legs bent on their own, sending her to her knees, and Liam didn’t hesitate to switch tactics.
Actually, that was Liam’s main strategy. He had simply confirmed its success now.
Liam threw something at Jessica before lifting his hand, catching the fan and rising into the air. Meanwhile, dark-purple fumes spread under him. His only rank 3 Poisonous Cloud Pill had finally gotten the chance to join the fray.
