There was more than love driving Liam’s words.
Liam did want to help Grace with her goal to repay her for everything she had done and been for him. He was also curious about the topic. He had never asked too much, and Grace didn’t look keen on sharing details yet, so he had respected that.
However, the northern region was famously more barren than the eastern one. The western region was also superior in that regard, and Liam and Grace needed a lot of resources, more than any other cultivator.
Even if the northern region had what the couple needed, competition would be more intense due to the scarcity of resources. That meant more fights, which always wasted assets, as well as a higher degree of focused enmity.
Liam had no idea how Clans worked, but he was certain Grace had a plan. That was her life mission after all. She had probably concocted strategies against her Clan since she was a child, and she now had Liam.
Initially, there was no answer, not with words. Grace was usually bold and confident, even shameless, but there were instances where her vulnerable self slipped out.
Grace’s grip was shaky as she clung to Liam’s back and pulled herself toward his face. Even her lips trembled as she kissed his cheek multiple times.
"Thank you," Grace whispered among the kisses. "Thank you. I love you. Thank you. Thank you."
A hiss blended with those affectionate whispers. Grace’s trauma still ran deep. She was understandably anxious to face the monster that had rejected her, as well as grateful that she wouldn’t have to fight alone, and Liam made a silent vow as he immersed his hand in her hair.
’I will kill them all,’ Liam swore to himself. Since Grace’s Clan had hurt her so much, he would swallow it whole.
Grace calmed down soon enough, but she kept clinging tightly to Liam, and he supported her head with his hand. Yet, she delivered an answer that seemed to contradict her previous reaction.
"I have a plan for my Clan," Grace said, clearing her throat. "We aren’t ready to implement it yet."
"Alright," Liam said, not insisting. "The northern region it is."
Before Liam could ask, Grace laid out her strategy.
"The first destination in any new environment is the Messengers Guild," Grace declared. "We’ll head there and purchase information. If the location is suitable, we’ll establish our force."
That was quite reasonable, aside from an issue that Liam didn’t hesitate to mention.
"Will they even let us enter the Guild?" Liam wondered. Eastern and northern branches had their differences, but neither he nor Grace had the greatest track record with them.
"That is unclear," Grace sighed. "I admit it’s a gamble, but we are out of options, and we have a great selling point."
"Sects have branching experts, too," Liam pointed out. "And so do Guilds. I can handle one or two with you, but they might hunt us down with far more."
That was the issue with a stable political environment. Powerful forces could put differences aside to deal with a common threat. Grace had her cultivation stage on her side now, but her opponents remained giant forces.
"Dear, I was talking about you," Grace revealed. "My handsome husband single-handedly funded an all-out war on the border’s righteous forces. His service was so meaningful even leafing experts took notice."
Understanding dawned upon Liam. Grace wanted to turn their imprisonment in the battle cages to their advantage, even using the Demoness’ name.
"Of course, being the virtuous and righteous man that he is," Grace continued, "My caring, loyal husband will offer his services to the righteous forces as payback for the poor treatment he has received on the border, taking the side of the Kingdom."
’This is the biggest lie I have ever heard,’ Liam gasped internally, almost not believing how feasible that idea was.
Liam definitely wasn’t on the Kingdom’s side, but the latter didn’t know that. From what everyone could see, Liam and Grace were just a couple watching each other’s backs while trying to move up in the cultivation world.
The first offenses had always come from others. Liam and Grace had merely reacted to them to the best of their ability. They weren’t innocent at all, but there were nuances.
The idea had no chance of working if the couple had nothing to offer, but they did. They just had to pretend to betray their former allies and switch sides, leaving everything else to the righteous forces’ greed, and Grace knew greed very well.
The Church remained the main issue, but it was probably time to sit down and talk with it. Liam didn’t have great hopes in that regard, but Grace had already pulled bigger miracles.
And if everything else failed, killing and plundering was still an option. It would just be difficult to implement without information, which was why the Messengers Guild was a priority destination.
"Let’s find a Messengers Guild," Liam agreed, not forgetting to follow up with compliments for his greedy woman.
Despite the joking mood in which the plan had come to be, the couple was tense when they found their target. It was just a few days after the intimate break when they stumbled upon a city.
That wasn’t Liam’s first time witnessing such a sight, but he still spent a few seconds absorbing it. Sparse patches of trees bordered a long series of wooden houses arranged at the sides of a river. There were defensive walls, and a great deal of carriages coming and going from the single entrance.
Truth be told, Liam and Grace had no idea a branch of the Messengers Guild was there. They didn’t even know the name of the city, but it was a good place where to start asking questions.
The problem was the attention Liam was feeling. He and Grace hadn’t made any effort to hide their movements in the last days. The plan was to come out in the open, so they had made themselves trackable.
It was unclear what the onlooker wanted, but they hadn’t acted yet, meaning they were probably waiting for reinforcements or for the couple to make a move.
Honestly, Liam was itching to summon his greatsword already, but the plan was to make peace, at least on the surface, so he and Grace eventually moved forward, heading for the unknown city.
