The three disciples remained separated within the darkness of the Altar of Conviction. The first layers of emotional illusions had shattered into dust, but none of them returned to the world of Red Sun Peak.

Instead, the darkness surrounding their individual areas slowly changed once more. A new world began forming around each disciple.

Lin Yuan slowly opened his eyes, his dark robes fluttering in an eerie, ashy wind. He found himself standing atop an enormous battlefield. There were countless corpses of fallen cultivators, their minced meat and organs scattered across the area. Many dead beasts, their plopped eyes, brain matter and internal organs flesh covered the blood-soaked ground as far as the eye could see. The streams of dark crimson blood flowed between broken stone monuments.

The sky above was a vortex of pitch-black storm clouds. His robes were torn, his knuckles bruised, and his breathing was vehement.

Standing before him, shivering on their knees in the mud... were many familiar faces.

Gu Fang Xin. Teng Haoran. Ying Yue... The arrogant clan elders who had once sneered at his existence. The wealthy merchants who had mocked his lack of an awakening. Even the prideful young geniuses from his clan.

Every single one of them fell onto the blood-stained dirt before him.

"Lin Yuan..." Gu Fang Xin trembled, his voice full of sheer terror. "Are you happy now, bastard? You won, and you’re the strongest."

A colossal golden throne carved from dragon bone and radiating suffocating pressure appeared on a high stone behind Lin Yuan.

A thunderous voice echoed throughout the crimson battlefield.

"You were ruthlessly rejected by the River of Origin. Yet you surpassed every blessed prodigy in the continent. You were abandoned by destiny itself. Yet you conquered destiny with your own hands."

The hundreds of kneeling figures lowered their heads until they touched the ground, their voices crying out in a desperate chorus.

"Great Lord Lin Yuan!"

"Invincible Supreme Beast Emperor!"

"Ruler of the Qinglin Continent!"

Lin Yuan stared down at the groveling crowd without a single trace of emotion on his handsome face. A magnificent crown of pure light hovered above his head.

The voice resonated again with temptation:

"Every single person who ever looked down upon you, every soul who ever humiliated you... is now crawling under your feet. Take the supreme throne, and rule over them forever."

"Stop this fucking shit again and again!" Lin Yuan slowly walked toward the golden throne, his boots crunching against the stone steps. "I won’t fall for these cozy dramatic illusions."

He reached out his hand. His fingers hovered barely an inch away from touching the smooth armrest.

"Rule them?" Lin Yuan whispered, his voice echoing over the quiet battlefield. "Nonsense!"

Lin Yuan turned his head, his dark eyes darting across the sprawling battlefield.

The kneeling figures were trembling vehemently. Some were weeping softly in despair; some were begging for his mercy; others were staring up at him with pure terror.

A faint, cold smile slowly appeared on Lin Yuan’s face. "That’s... absurdly boring."

The battlefield froze in mid-air, and the wind stopped blowing.

"What?!" the ancient voice echoed with sudden confusion.

Lin Yuan turned his back on the golden throne, stepping down the stone.

"I never once cared about making people kneel before me," Lin Yuan announced, his voice lingering with unshakeable clarity. "I only sought the strength to decide my path, without anyone else dictating my life. If I wanted people to kneel before me, then you wouldn’t be taking this nonsense from the heavens!"

"And if I truly become strong enough to stand above the heavens..." He stared back over his shoulder toward the shimmering throne with disdain. "I don’t need some damn stone chair to prove it to anyone."

A massive fracture burst out across the sky and earth.

’This brat is not a normal guy,’ the ancient voice thought, its appearance quivering for the first time.

The golden throne shattered into dust. Lin Yuan stood alone once more in the pitch-black void, his expression calm, his heart untainted.

Chen Ming opened his eyes, shielding his face from the golden light. He was standing in the center of a large colosseum that stretched as high as the clouds. Hundreds of passionate spectators filled the surrounding tiers, their deafening screams shaking the sky above.

"Chen Ming! Chen Ming! Chen Ming!"

His name reverberated like thunder across the heavens.

"Again?" Chen Ming looked around, blinking again. "What the hell is going on now?!"

A massive stone platform hovered under its legs. Standing across from him on the other side of the arena, there were dozens of young cultivators.

Among them were every opponent who had ever defeated him in the academy matches, every person who had laughed at his mistakes, and every disciple who had called his wind-falcon a useless bird.

The massive crowd roared in bloodthirst.

"Defeat them all!"

"Prove to the world that you’re the greatest!"

FLASH!

A magnificent armor made of golden scales appeared over Chen Ming’s body. His wind-falcon appeared beside him in a flurry of light, and again this falcon was colossal. Its wings spanned fifty yards, and its golden feathers shimmered with pure essence.

The ancient voice echoed through the colosseum.

"This is what your heart has always craved. I will grant you everything, Chen Ming! Recognition, respect, and victory."

The crowd screamed even louder, the sound deafening: "Fight! Kill them all! Become number one!"

Chen Ming’s fists clenched within the golden gauntlets. For a single moment... his eyes raged with a fiery excitement. Then... he noticed something.

The divine, golden wind-falcon standing beside him was staring forward. But its eyes weren’t filled with excitement or joy. They were dull, and profoundly exhausted.

Chen Ming froze, staring into the eyes of the bird.

"You don’t actually want any of this, do you, buddy?" Chen Ming whispered.

The golden falcon slowly lowered its head, letting out a faint screech.

Chen Ming slowly began to laugh, a genuine chuckle escaping his lips. "Hahaha..."

He reached up, scratching the back of his neck. "Yeah. Honestly... I don’t give a damn about any of this either."

The crowd suddenly went dead silent. Chen Ming looked up toward the hundreds of illusionary spectators, folding his arms.

"You know what?" Chen Ming yelled, his voice echoing across the quiet arena. "I don’t give a single shit if you people call me the strongest or the weakest!"

"I’d rather lose ten battles alongside my little bird... than win a thousand gloriously by becoming someone I’m not!"

The golden armor instantly vanished from his body, and the illusion shattered into millions of sparkling fragments.

Chen Ming remained standing alone in the quiet void.

Chen Ming smiled brightly, gently patting his beast’s head with a finger. "Come on, you idiot. Let’s find our way to become stronger."

Lian Nichang slowly opened his eyes.

Instead... he found himself standing at the foot of an impossibly tall mountain. At its peak stood a magnificent palace made of pure white jade.

A massive, joyful crowd surrounded him at the base; his parents, his childhood friends, his academy teachers, and his wolf beast. Everyone was looking at him with pride and smiling.

The ancient voice echoed warmly. "You chose the dangerous path of cultivation, you chose struggle over simple peace. Yet, the heavens are merciful. You can possess both."

A brilliant staircase made of golden clouds appeared before his feet, leading straight up toward the heavenly palace.

"You don’t have to leave us ever again, Nichang," At the top of the stairs stood his parents, looking at him. His mother smiled warmly down at him.

His father extended his hand. "You can become powerful right here, son. Everything you have ever strived for is waiting at the top."

Lian Nichang stared up at the glowing staircase. He took one step forward, and then another.

His eyes slowly became clouded with hesitation. He could have everything he had ever dreamed of; his beloved family, supreme cultivation power, his loyal beast beside him, and a life free of fear.

He continued climbing the golden stairs. Halfway up the mountain... his silver wolf beast suddenly stopped moving.

Lian Nichang turned around on the step, looking down. "What’s wrong, buddy? Come on!"

The silver wolf didn’t follow. Instead, it turned its head away from the palace, staring out toward the dark wilderness stretching far beyond the illusion.

Lian Nichang stared at his companion for a few quiet breaths. Then, a soft, understanding smile spread across his face.

"You still want to push further into the wild, don’t you?" Lian Nichang asked, smiling slightly.

The wolf beast let out a small growl, nodding its head.

Lian Nichang turned back toward the top of the stairs. His parents were still waiting, but his mother’s eyes were now filled with tears. "If you turn your back on this staircase, Nichang... you’ll regret leaving us."

Lian Nichang’s expression turned solemn.

"Maybe I will..." Lian Nichang whispered, stepping down from the golden staircase onto the ground. "But if I stay here in a comfortable dream... I’ll regret never knowing just how far I could have truly walked with my own feet."

The grand white palace trembled, and his parents slowly vanished into light. The holy mountain cracked apart.

Lian Nichang walked back down, patting his wolf beast’s head. "Come on, buddy,"

The three disciples remained separated, none could see the others, and none knew what trial the others had endured. They simply stood within the darkness, their hearts calm and steady.

For a few seconds... nothing happened. Then, a magnificent golden radiance suddenly descended from the heavens, illuminating the darkness at the three disciples at a time.

The voice echoed clearly throughout every corner of the ruins. "You have cleared the Altar of Conviction."

Lin Yuan slowly raised his head, his dark eyes glinting against the golden light. Chen Ming’s eyes widened in surprise. Lian Nichang immediately dropped into an alert stance.

"Your conviction has been tested and recognized... your human heart has remained unwavering."

A tall pillar of warm golden light appeared a few steps before each of them. Floating within each golden pillar there were countless ancient runes and divine symbols.

Then, the ancient voice spoke once again. "Claim the inheritance by stepping forward into the light."

Lin Yuan stared at the golden light before him. A faint, confident smile slowly appeared on his face. Chen Ming clenched his fists tight, grinning wildly. Lian Nichang took a steady breath.
