Legendary Vampire in the Apocalypse

Chapter 88: Don’t Take My Advice, I’ve Become Selfish

Dion tipped his head back against the top of the backrest behind him, looking at the ceiling.

"You know, I’ve been thinking about luck a fair bit lately, and I’ve ended up understanding something about it that I didn’t expect to."

He looked up at the ceiling for a moment.

"I used to think it was a thing that just... happened to you. That some people get handed something and some people never do, and there’s no sense to be found in any of it. That part of it certainly remains true. But I don’t think that’s the whole truth of it any more.

A good part of what everyone calls luck is something that a person built for themselves and then never noticed they’d been carrying along all that accumulated action in the past with them which had just been waiting for the right... catalyst to make itself apparent through what would in the moment, seem like arbitrary luck."

His attention came back down onto the boy.

"Think about tonight. I was standing in that room holding a thing I didn’t fully understand, in front of sixty people, and I picked you out of all of them. And you heard me mention why I picked you, yeah?"

"...Because I went after the bear."

Dion nodded once and said, "Exactly. If you had stayed down or just went back to the corridor with everyone else, I would never have thought to ask you first. I might not have thought to ask anybody at all.

I’d have eaten the fruit myself because I doubt Madeline would have eaten it if I offered her, and Basil definitely wouldn’t have. In that version of what happened, I would have gone the rest of my life without ever knowing what I’d wasted on myself."

He shrugged faintly.

"So yes, it was luck. It was luck that the thing grew on this floor tonight, and it was luck that I was here, and happened to be the only one here that could even begin to guess that it was something that should be used rather than thrown away.

But you were the one who did everything that made me think to offer it to you before any of that happened. That part of it wasn’t luck at all. That part you made, and you’ve proved that the saying ’fortune favours the bold’ is a lot more literal than I considered it."

Paris’s throat moved, and he didn’t look up for a moment.

"And, um..." Paris’s eyes came off him, went to the floor, and came back up again. "You said it would have been wasted on you, but if it’s that important, then shouldn’t you have taken it anyway? Even if it did less for you, wouldn’t less of something like that still be worth more than handing it away?"

He stopped there, and his fingers worked against each other once, and then he asked it anyway.

"What I mean to ask is, what yours is? Your soul grade, I mean."

Dion looked at him for a long moment.

"Are you saying I should trust you with something like that? Because something else you should understand about being an awakened, what you are already onto since you kept quiet about your soul until now, is that someone’s dimensions and all the other information on your Chronicle, is very important to an awakened. Information about all these things is now one of the most important secrets you should be keeping."

Paris opened his mouth, and then he closed it again.

And ultimately, he didn’t say yes.

"I don’t know," he said. "I’ve never had any important secret of anybody else’s to keep before. So I can’t sit here and tell you that I’m good at it, because I’ve never once had to be."

His hands closed at his sides.

"So if you aren’t sure, then don’t tell me. I’d rather not know at all than end up being the reason it got out."

’Hah! That was the last thing I thought you would have said.’

Dion laughed low in his chest, and he leaned back into the seat behind him.

"SSS."

Paris blinked at him several times as his tense expression loosened with surprise and uncertainty.

"...Sorry?"

"My soul is SSS grade. So about six pluses higher than yours. And from what I know, SSS grade is the highest I’m aware there is so nothing would have happened for me if I ate the fruit, hence, it’d have been wasted."

For a while Paris didn’t say anything at all, and when he finally did his voice had been somewhat concealed beneath a surprised laugh.

"...That’s real? That’s something a person can just have immediately when they awaken?"

Dion shrugged a little. "It’s something that I have because of luck I created for myself. Regardless, you should keep all this between the two of us for now, until you find other people you are sure you can trust. But even then, the fewer people who know what you can actually do, the better off you are."

Dion paused there, then he laughed to himself a little, shaking his head as he said, "Although, even with me saying that, you should make the decision for yourself on who to tell. I’ve become a good chunk too selfish since everything happened for my advice to be the best example to follow."

Paris nodded again, and his shoulders eased a little. His expression sobered as his lips pursed.

His attention lingered on Dion’s eyes silently. That so... exotic red colour of them felt just as nerve inducing to look at even though he had awakened as well.

A part of him had been really excited to come tell him what had happened, that he could also fight those things like he had now. And that was even despite the fact he had considered not mentioning what had happened with his soul at all.

For whatever reason though, he had given into the fact that he wanted to tell him about it. And now, even silent, he wondered just what much more there was to Mr. Dion’s chronicle that he didn’t know about.

Just how high were his other Dimensions?

Paris had never known what it was like to have someone to genuinely look up to before all this. But now...

Suddenly, Dion looked away from him and at the door.

Within the next moment, a series of urgent knocks resounded from the door.

"There’s people outside coming through the barricades! It’s Anton and the others!"
