Chapter 2056: Chapter 2056: Reluctant to Return (23)

With Lili gone, the atmosphere was a little awkward, but You Zixi and the others quickly changed the topic.

Lili only came back after the dishes were served. She plopped down over there all puffed up with anger, and didn’t spare Chuzheng a good look.

The guys, on the other hand, were pretty polite and apologized to her.

When everyone had almost finished eating, Chuzheng got up and went to the restroom. Coming out from inside, she saw that Lili was right at the door, posture screaming that she’d been waiting.

Chuzheng went out, turned on the faucet to wash her hands. "Something?"

Lili looked at her through the mirror. "Stay away from Brother Chi."

"Why should I?" Chuzheng lifted her eyes and met her gaze head-on. "Who are you to Chi Gui? What right do you have to decide who’s around him?" I don’t even meddle with that! What the hell are you!

Lili glared at her in disgust, and said with certainty, "Brother Chi will never like you."

Chuzheng turned off the faucet and turned to face Lili. "Don’t you have a boyfriend?"

Lili frowned. "What’s that got to do with you?"

Chuzheng: "You’ve got a boyfriend but you’re still worrying about other guys. Body in Cao camp, heart in Han camp—does your boyfriend know?"

Lili: "..."

"I...I don’t like Brother Chi." Lili’s tone got anxious. "I’m just advising you to know your place. Brother Chi will never like someone like you."

"Oh." It’s fine if he doesn’t like me now. In the end he’s mine anyway. Mine!

Lili: "..."

Chuzheng’s attitude was way too calm; it was like all of Lili’s force was punching into cotton, not stirring up the slightest ripple.

Chuzheng flicked the water off her hands and walked out. As she passed Lili, she tilted her head slightly. "You can like him, but don’t stretch your hand too far."

Lili’s pupils shrank a little. "You..."

Chuzheng strode off without even giving Lili a chance to speak.

Lili stood there in a daze. She was supposed to be the one threatening her; how did it end up with her getting threatened instead?

-

When Chuzheng got back to her seat, Chi Gui was nowhere to be seen.

"Where is he?"

"Outside on a call." You Zixi waggled his brows. "Relax, Brother Chi won’t run away."

You Zixi jerked his chin toward the door. "See? Didn’t run, right?"

Chi Gui came back to his seat holding his phone. Someone beside him handed him something and he put the phone down to take it.

Out of the corner of her eye, Chuzheng caught a glimpse of Chi Gui’s phone screen.

And then she saw this sentence—So do you like me or not!

Sender—You Zixi.

Chuzheng: "????"

Chuzheng looked over at You Zixi talking with the guy next to him, her suspicious gaze sliding back and forth between the two.

These two were always whispering to each other. She’d already found it a bit weird before.

Turns out it’s this spicy.

Socialist brotherhood?

No!

He’s my Good Person Card!

[Main Quest: Please pay for this meal. Time limit: thirty minutes.]

All the scenes in Chuzheng’s head were smashed aside by the quest.

Chi Gui had already sat back down. He turned his head and glanced at Chuzheng. "Are you full?"

"Yeah."

"Want to eat anything else?"

"No need."

Chi Gui felt that Chuzheng was acting a bit strange, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it for now.

Chuzheng got up again, and Chi Gui asked on reflex, "Where are you going?"

"...Restroom."

Chi Gui: "Didn’t you just go? Why are you going again?"

Chuzheng: "...I just feel like going."

Chi Gui: "..."

All right then.

Don’t try to guess a girl’s thoughts.

Using the restroom as an excuse, Chuzheng went to settle the bill.

The prices at this place weren’t high. Split AA between so many people, it’d be around forty or fifty yuan per person.

When everyone finished eating and started pooling money, they were told that the bill was already paid.

"Who paid?"

The boss looked up, scanned the crowd once, and finally pointed at a retreating figure at the door. "That little girl there."

"Hang Chuzheng?"

Chuzheng was Chi Gui’s person; they didn’t dare let Chuzheng pay at all, but she’d already gone and settled the bill.

-

"You stay in the dorm even during break?"

On the way back, Chi Gui was walking Chuzheng, and seeing her head toward the school again, he felt a bit strange.

"Yeah. Is that not allowed?" The school didn’t say we couldn’t stay!

"You’re not going home?" Supposedly lots of Dongyang students didn’t go home. Did studying really need to be this hardcore?

"No place to stay outside." That Bastard didn’t let her buy a place, so she couldn’t be bothered to deal with it. It’s all the same wherever she lives anyway.

"..." Chi Gui hesitated. "Your family isn’t here?"

"I don’t have a home."

Chi Gui was stunned. No home? No family?

The warm yellow light of the streetlamp spilled down from overhead, wrapping the girl in it, as if tracing a hazy edge around her.

From where he stood, he could just see the girl’s beautiful, sculpted profile. Her long, thick lashes drooped slightly, blocking out the emotions in her eyes.

A few images flashed unbidden through Chi Gui’s mind.

In the next instant, he abruptly snapped out of it.

He hastily shifted his gaze away, staring at the dust-covered shrubs by the road, and dryly picked up the thread of conversation: "You’re alone? What about your parents?"

Chuzheng turned her head to look at him. "Family info is the sort of thing we should only get into when we have a more advanced relationship, right?"

Chi Gui: "..."

A more advanced relationship...

The tips of Chi Gui’s ears gradually heated up. He pointed at the school gate. "We’re here. Go on in."

"I’ve got something I want to ask you."

Chi Gui felt uneasy and didn’t really want to talk. "It’s getting late. Whatever it is, let’s talk another day."

Chuzheng said seriously, "I want to ask now."

Chi Gui: "..."

If she brought up that kind of thing again, was he supposed to refuse or agree?

"What...do you want to ask?"

"What’s your relationship with You Zixi?"

"???" That’s the question? "Classmates."

"And?"

"Dorm mates."

"And?"

"Friends."

"That’s it?"

"..."

What else could there be?

"Does he like you?"

Strictly speaking, that text could’ve been sent by Chi Gui, but Chuzheng felt that was unlikely.

Don’t ask her why.

If you ask, it’s just intuition.

Chi Gui was floored by her question. "He...likes me? Why would you ask that?" Is she crazy? Why would You Zixi like him? He’s a guy!

Chuzheng answered very honestly, "I saw the message he sent you."

Message?

What message?

Chi Gui took out his phone, checked his texts first and, finding nothing, switched to WeChat.

He didn’t even have to tap it open to see that last sentence from You Zixi.

Chi Gui: "..."

Read on its own like that, it really was kind of misleading...

But that wasn’t what You Zixi meant at all.

"You can choose not to like me, but you also can’t like anyone else. Guys or girls, both are off-limits."

Before Chi Gui could explain, he heard Chuzheng continue.

Chi Gui’s mouth twitched. "Student Hang, don’t you think you’re being a little domineering?"

He can’t like her but also can’t like anyone else?

Who even makes rules like that.

"Mm." Chuzheng nodded. "So please make an effort to get used to it."

Chi Gui: "..."

The way you say ’make an effort’ is really ’sincere’, huh!
