Chapter 2060: Chapter 2060: Reluctant to Return (27)
"Then should we take Brother Chi back first?"
"No need, just let him stay here." Chuzheng turned down You Zixi’s suggestion.
You Zixi thought about it, and as a sensible person, nodded in deep understanding.
After You Zixi left, Chuzheng was getting ready to sneak a peek at the card.
Who knew that the moment she pushed the door open, Chi Gui was standing right behind it, eyes unfocused, like a wooden statue.
Chuzheng: "..."
That’s enough to scare someone to death!
"I’m hungry." The boy’s lips parted slightly, his tone very flat, no emotion to be heard: "Got anything to eat?"
"Yeah."
Chuzheng still had a bit of stuff in the fridge. She did a quick simple prep and brought it out for Chi Gui.
Chi Gui buried his head in the food, eating a bit fast. His cheeks were stuffed full, soft messy hair hanging down, blocking his eyes.
"Slow down." Chuzheng poured him a glass of water. "Don’t choke." If you choke I’ll have to deal with it.
When Chi Gui finished eating, he stared at the now empty bowl, dazed.
Chuzheng followed his gaze. After a while, she asked, "Didn’t get enough? There’s more, want some?"
Chi Gui came back to himself, put down the chopsticks, and shook his head. "Thanks."
Chuzheng replied politely, "You’re welcome."
-
Night fell.
Outside the window, the rain kept falling. In the room, the boy lay on the bed, sleeping restlessly.
No one knew how long had passed when his tightly shut eyes suddenly opened, his breathing a little rushed.
Chi Gui’s throat was dry, even swallowing felt hard.
The Dark in front of him gradually thinned, and he could vaguely make out a bit of shape.
This wasn’t his room.
Where was he?
The question flashed across Chi Gui’s mind.
Before his brain could give an answer, a voice suddenly sounded beside him: "What’s wrong?"
Cool and indifferent, yet clearer than ever in the Dark.
Chi Gui jerked his head over. It was obvious there was someone beside him.
Chi Gui: "..."
His sluggish brain slowly started to work.
He remembered coming back with Chuzheng...
But why were they in the same room, on the same bed?
Chi Gui found his voice. "Why... are you here?"
"You’ve got a fever." Chuzheng reached out to feel his forehead. "I’m watching you."
His burning forehead was pressed by a cool palm, and it instantly felt soothing.
Only now did Chi Gui realize his head was muddled and his body had no strength.
He avoided Chuzheng’s hand a bit awkwardly. "I’m fine... You don’t need to stay here, go sleep in your room."
"This is my place. I’ll be wherever I want." Chuzheng pulled the quilt up over him. "Sleep."
Chi Gui: "..."
Chuzheng was just leaning against the headboard, sitting on the quilt beside him, nothing overly intimate.
Chi Gui had no energy to argue with her right now. All he felt was the burning discomfort, his throat so dry it was about to smoke.
He held it in, but he really couldn’t anymore. "I want some water."
Chuzheng didn’t say anything. She just quickly went out, poured a cup of hot water, came back in, and helped him sit up.
Chi Gui wanted to sit on his own, but Chuzheng was very forceful, hooking an arm around his shoulders, and he was forced to lean against her.
The hot water moistened his parched mouth and slid down his throat into his stomach.
All around them it was Dark and quiet, making the sound of swallowing stand out even more.
After drinking the whole cup, Chi Gui felt like he’d come back to life.
"Want more?" Chuzheng wiped the water from the corner of his mouth, her fingertip brushing past his lips, whether on purpose or not.
Chi Gui’s body stiffened just a little. He turned his head away and wiped with the back of his own hand. "No."
Chuzheng ran her hand over the hair she’d been eyeing for ages, then laid him back down and tucked the quilt around him.
With the quilt over him, one side was pressed down by Chuzheng, and he felt like he’d been sealed.
His head was foggy, but he wasn’t sleepy at all.
His thoughts were a mess, even he didn’t know what he was thinking.
No one knew how long had passed when Chi Gui turned his eyes to the person leaning beside him. His lips moved for a while before he finally spoke: "Are you asleep?"
"No."
"Are you... cold?"
"Not cold." Isn’t the AC on? What’s there to be cold about.
"..." Chi Gui stopped talking.
Chuzheng realized belatedly, but thinking it through, something still felt off. Maybe Chi Gui was trying to use this chance to send her back to her room?
Good thing I’m a bit more clever!
Chi Gui didn’t know when he fell asleep; when he woke up it was already the next day.
It was still raining outside. The sky was gloomy and heavy, making everything feel suffocating.
There was no sign of that person in the room anymore.
Chi Gui rubbed his forehead as he sat up, waited a couple of minutes, then lifted the quilt and got out of bed.
When his feet hit the floor, he felt heavy-headed and light-footed, like the whole room was spinning.
Once that wave passed, he headed for the door.
His fingers had just touched the doorknob when the knob pressed down from the other side. Then the door was pushed open, and the girl outside appeared in his sight.
"You’re awake?"
"Yeah..."
Chuzheng felt his forehead again. It still felt a bit hot. "You’ll take another dose of medicine later."
"Okay."
Chi Gui was like a doll without a soul; whatever Chuzheng said, that’s what it was.
With his illness lingering, even his hair seemed to have lost its usual sheen. The whole person looked listless, curled up on the sofa, staring at his phone screen.
Since yesterday, aside from a missed call from You Zixi, there hadn’t been a single other call.
His hand tightened faintly around the phone.
Those two didn’t even want to call...
They didn’t care where he was or what he was doing...
Maybe one day if he died, they’d only be arguing over who should host his funeral.
Suddenly the back of his hand warmed, and his phone was forcibly taken away. "Looking at your phone when you’re sick makes you dizzier, so less screen time."
As the words fell, a blanket landed on him, and the girl wrapped an arm around his shoulders through the blanket.
Chi Gui turned to look at her. The girl’s expression was serious and focused, like she was holding on to something precious that needed careful handling.
His lashes trembled lightly, his voice hoarse. "Do you like me?"
Chuzheng gave him a strange look, then nodded. "Mm."
Chi Gui said, "Then let’s go out."
Chuzheng found it even stranger. "Are you fever-addled?" What if you get better and then break up with me?! I’ll hit you!
Chi Gui pressed his lips together.
"Once you’re better..." The rest of Chuzheng’s sentence suddenly went silent as the loose blanket slowly slipped down, covering both of their heads, blocking their view.
-
The blanket was half dragging on the floor, half hanging on Chi Gui.
Chuzheng tugged it up, wrapping it around him, staring up at the person above. "What, you want me to get sick too?"
Chi Gui seemed to only realize it then. He hurriedly braced himself on the side and sat up. "Sorry."
He hadn’t thought that far just now.
Chi Gui followed up with, "So what’s your answer?"
Chuzheng’s tone was serious. "Chi Gui, I want you to not make this decision when you’re sick and your head’s foggy, because I won’t give you a chance to regret it."
"...I’m very clear-headed." He knew exactly what he was saying. "And I won’t regret it."
"Okay." Chuzheng raised her hand, brushed aside the messy hair on his forehead, revealing his eyes. "Remember what you said."
