Chapter 2096: Chapter 2096: Light-Year Distance (25)
Wei Shi had originally planned to stay here for a while, but unexpectedly someone outside quickly came in and told him he could leave.
Wei Shi didn’t move. "I didn’t ask anyone to pick me up."
Did the Wei Family get the news?
"Officer Yao is doing the paperwork for you," the other urged. "Hurry up, the two officers are still waiting."
A figure flashed through Wei Shi’s mind. Combined with what the other said about "two officers," he figured it was probably someone she had called over.
Because of the medicine’s aftereffects, Wei Shi felt weak all over. He braced himself on the side as he stood up.
"Hey, are you okay?"
Didn’t they check him when he came in and confirm he wasn’t injured? Why did he look kind of serious now?
"I’m fine."
Wei Shi refused the other’s support and slowly walked out.
Chuzheng and Inspector Yao were standing together, neither of them speaking. Out of the corner of her eye, Chuzheng saw him and immediately walked toward him, one hand supporting his arm, the other circling behind his waist to hold him there.
Wei Shi lowered his eyes, looking at the fingers clasped around his waist.
The person who had followed them out looked slightly surprised.
But they were officers; it wasn’t his place to speak.
Inspector Yao said with anguished righteousness, "Watch it, this is a public place!"
Hearing that, Wei Shi immediately struggled. "I can manage on my own, let me go."
"Afraid of being seen?"
"...No." He was worried that if others saw, it might have negative consequences for her.
That was the first thought that had popped into his head.
Wei Shi then found it absurd.
Yet he still couldn’t just ignore it...
"Then I won’t let go."
"..."
The medicine was still in effect; Wei Shi actually didn’t have much strength. Bit by bit, the weight of his body shifted onto Chuzheng.
"Thank you, Inspector Yao."
Inspector Yao waved his hand. "No need. If you want to thank someone, thank Vice Councillor Liang."
Wei Shi felt the hand on his waist tighten slightly, as if reminding him that she was the one he should be thanking.
-
After picking him up, Inspector Yao left first, and Chuzheng took Wei Shi back to his place.
"Can I go up today?"
"...Mm."
This time Wei Shi didn’t refuse and let Chuzheng come up and enter his apartment.
Wei Shi lived in a one-bedroom place. The bedroom door was closed. The living room was clean but a bit bare, with very few things in it.
"Sit wherever you want."
After saying that, Wei Shi didn’t bother with her, found a spot to sit down himself, and tugged at his collar, pulling it into deliberate disarray.
Chuzheng looked around once, then sat opposite him.
The two of them sat quietly, neither saying a word.
Time ticked by, and Wei Shi felt the weakness in his body slipping away.
"Why didn’t you leave earlier?"
Wei Shi’s voice suddenly sounded in the room.
Chuzheng countered, "Why should I leave?"
"They were coming for me. You could have completely just tossed me aside."
"You think I’m afraid of them?"
"..."
Wei Shi thought of that scene again. She indeed had no need to fear them.
Wei Shi tugged at his collar again; his collarbone could already be glimpsed beneath the fabric. He licked his dry lips. "You want to sleep with me, is that it?"
Chuzheng: "..."
What did you just say?
Chuzheng stared at Wei Shi, and Wei Shi didn’t dodge. The messy collar gave him a somewhat decadent sort of beauty.
"Wei Shi..."
"I’m going to take a shower."
Wei Shi got up and went into the bedroom.
Chuzheng: "????"
What the hell?
Did the Good Person Card take the wrong medicine?
-
When Wei Shi came out after changing his clothes, Chuzheng was no longer in the living room. Only a note she’d left and a still-steaming meal remained.
Wei Shi held the note and looked at it for a long time, then slowly sat down on the sofa.
He waited until the steam from the food had completely dissipated before lazily opening it and taking up a spoon, eating one spoonful after another.
The cold food slid into his stomach bit by bit, and it felt like all his internal organs were chilled.
After he finished all the food, Wei Shi curled himself into the sofa, staring blankly into space.
The room gradually darkened until it was swallowed by darkness.
In the quiet room, a sound suddenly broke out. Wei Shi got up from the sofa and walked through the dark into the bedroom, opening the door.
The bedroom was about the same size as the living room. A bed, a table, a wardrobe... other than that, there was nothing else.
But on the bedroom wall, photos were plastered densely, with lines drawn on the blank spaces, connecting those photos together.
The door closed behind Wei Shi, and the whole room became like a cold prison, utterly devoid of warmth.
But Wei Shi was long used to it.
-
The next day.
Early in the morning, Chuzheng downed two glasses of ice water in a row to suppress the restlessness in her chest.
She deeply regretted leaving yesterday. She should’ve just 404-ed the Good Person Card right then and there.
He was hers anyway.
What difference does sooner or later make!
[Miss, how about blowing some money to cool off?] King’s Account popped up sneakily.
I’m very calm, thanks.
[I don’t think you’re calm.]
I don’t need what you think!
[Let’s just blow some money!] King’s Account swiftly tossed out a mission and slipped away in an instant.
Chuzheng: "..."
Seething, Chuzheng drank two more glasses of water and stormed out the door.
After she finished blowing money, she planned to go check on yesterday’s progress, only to run into someone she definitely hadn’t expected.
"Liang Chuzheng!"
Mother Liang’s loud voice boomed out, drawing the gaze of everyone within a hundred meters.
Chuzheng: "..." She kind of wanted to hit her.
Mother Liang hurried over, ending up breaking into a run, as if afraid that Chuzheng might bolt.
Unlike the last time they met, this time Mother Liang clearly looked much more worn out, her makeup slapped on in a hurry.
"Liang Chuzheng, you’ve really done it now. Look what you’ve done to your own family—what exactly is your problem?" Mother Liang opened with a barrage of accusations.
The Liang Family had been having terrible luck lately.
All because she had suddenly announced she was severing ties with them.
Mother Liang naturally pinned all of this on Chuzheng.
"The Liang Family raised you all these years, and this is what we get? A white-eyed wolf like you!"
"I also doubt I’m actually your biological daughter." Chuzheng’s tone was calm and even.
Their daughter came back alive, and they didn’t care at all; all they thought about was profit.
Mother Liang froze for a moment, then jabbed a finger at Chuzheng’s nose. "What nonsense are you spouting? Oh, I get it, now you don’t even acknowledge us, is that it?!"
"We’ve already severed our relationship."
"..."
"If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going."
Mother Liang had finally run into Chuzheng; there was no way she’d let her go. She reached out to grab Chuzheng’s clothes.
Chuzheng raised her hand and knocked Mother Liang’s hand away, leaving without a change in expression.
"Liang Chuzheng, you stop right there!"
"Liang Chuzheng!"
-
After Wei Shi finished two classes, he noticed the students around him clustered together, talking. He vaguely heard the name "Liang Chuzheng."
Wei Shi frowned slightly and opened the Star Network.
There was a video on the Star Network, being shared and debated by everyone.
In the video, a disheveled-looking middle-aged woman was sitting on the ground, crying loudly as she denounced the girl standing beside her.
The girl stood there with cold brows and indifferent eyes. Faced with the surrounding crowd’s pointing fingers and comments, she showed no emotion at all, as if she were merely watching some trivial farce.
She was just like that...
Cold, distant.
And yet... sometimes Wei Shi had the illusion that she was different when she was in front of him.
